This video is all about the disassembly of a rear axle out of a 2004 Dodge sprinter. The reason I wanted to take apart one of these axles is to get real, trustworthy information about what is in these units.
The end goal is to install a traction device in my van but I can't have my van down for any length of time.

The axle with the two splines is actually used in the G Wagon for the differential lock (as one person already mentioned further down). The T1 Mercedes spent constructed

I realize your video was made 4yrs ago now but this was SUPER helpful for me. I do wish you had shown us the removal of the pinion & bearing, as I have horrible noise coming from the rear end: TBD wheel bearings, carrier bearings and/or pinion bearing. Like you, I'm not a "professional" mechanic but have been wrenching on my old air cooled VWs over 30yrs. My '05 Sprinter is "all new to me" but after watching your vid, I think it's easy enough to disassemble and replace all these bearings, fill w/oil and get back on the road w/out HOWLING in the rear end. Hope you're still making videos and let us know if ever you figured out a LSDiff or locker option?!?! Cheers, Todd in Portland, OR.

Hi there, Ya, I never removed the pinion on that axle. I still have the axle and might be able to at some point but not sure when. From what I have seen the pinion bearings are likely to go before the wheel bearings. That said, if you are comfortable changing the wheel bearings, the pinion shouldn't be that hard. Just don't mix up the shims and you should be good. No, I have not found a locker for this axle but I'm still looking.

Thank you or this video. This is some very helpful information for anything rear end related. Better than the videos of people who barely know what they are doing showing you how to "change your breaks".

Thank you very much for this video . I got the information that i was looking for. So .... no clips inside the Diff ! So i can just remove the brake system and unbolt the axle shaft and change the bearing seal! Thanks again for posting.

Thanks for the video and info. My '06 may need some bearings later on. Takes away part of the uphill learning curve when one does not have any differential experience. One company that works on Sprinters outside of Chicago, west; does not want to replace axle bearing seals only (passenger side) because they have had bad luck. They want to buy new end assembly. MB wanted $170 for new seal kit. For me I just was checking for future reference. My RR seal drips but loss is minimal at this time.

Great video! I have a 2004 sprinter van and it's making a lot of noise while driving. I think it's the pinion bearing, same one you pointed out was going bad here. Have you had a chance to try and remove the pinion bearing? I'm wondering how easy it is to remove/replace. Will I need a press or will it just come out easy. I suppose you need to open up the differential to replace it too? Thanks for any advice!

That model doesn't have ABS fitted. Was ABS an option, I thought it was fitted to every sprinter. I recently found out that it may only be installed on the LWB, unless the client asked for it to be installed.

Thanks that was really useful and we'll put together, I'm in the Uk with A 2006 mercedes sprinter, there is so little useful info on the net. I would have like to have seen where the prop shaft enters the housing and where the bearings sit. With a view to being able to replace seals and bearings.

I have the 2006 Sprinter 3 Meter WB with 170K and am replacing the median drive shaft bearing and yoke. Have had vibration from that worn common bearing and fatiqued rubber mount for 15K miles and finally had time to replace it. In summer Chicago weather it was not noticeable but winter comes and it is annoying. Will make a video and tell all when I have the time. The differential bearings have some miles to go before replacing. MB was having problems with the differentials some years ago (5 cylinder) and a local mechanic in Chicago suburb reworked the differential and made it right. I heard him say a handful MB tech engineers came to his shop to study and learn the cure. At the time MB bought Dodge they were not open to replacing diff parts and claimed false situation to avoid replacing the differentials (one company blaming another)

I have a new video on repositioning the drive shaft some 18-19MM toward the passenger side by using a MBenz little known median bearing "offset" mounting "shim". I have made 3 videos of this process using the revised mounting bracket. T1N driveshaft reposition of median bearing is the title under Vincent Rolfe. Shifting the median bearing over cured most of the unwanted driveshaft vibration at 175K miles. The revised bracket was the only one available in NJ warehouse. Seems as through MB did not want to recall 60,000 T1N vans!

@@zachklamfoth7583 Get a true review of your drive train by a Mercedes Sprinter mechanic and then fix it. Let it go and other parts can cost lots of money. How many miles on your model and do you carry heavy loads? I have the short wheel base model with 15" tire rims; the 16" larger model may be different in harmonics.

@@zachklamfoth7583 40 and 60 mph sounds like 5th gear speed with the median bearing consisting of the 3 leg rubber mounting going out and possibly the one bearing getting a little old. Differential sounds come in at 68-70 and noise is the result of gear wear. The shorter wheelbases have one median bearing. Don't know about the longest WB layout.

I have an 04 sprinter as well . A ready to order locker or mechanical LSD would be awesome and a game changer for many . I would pass on buying a newer 4wd model then (seems inevitably in my future) .I have a quaife LSD in my Subaru 5 speed in my Vanagon and its a big help.

Hi, I just removed worn bearings from my 2006 T1N with 320,000 miles. The bearings were made by Koyo. Do you know if these might have been stock bearings? Did you notice who made the bearings on the differential that you tore down in this video? Thank you.

So did you end up finding a limited slip or locking differential that will work for the t1n? I found your video because I'm looking to do the same. I'm wondering if it would be easier and cheaper to use old axle from an American truck like a Dana.

The reason you have these 2 splined parts on one shaft is due to the differential lock, most sprinters have this shaft but not the mechanism of the lock.

Since making this video I have also figured this out. Do you have any idea if the carrier assembly out of a G-Wagon would fit in a T1n? While not cheap, G-Wagon parts are available in the USA where 4x4 sprinter parts are not.
