Honestly, I will never understand why Ted Woolsey was a localizer for japanese games to begin with rather than simply a writer for western games. Appearently his writing was so good that he got Kefka from FFVI retconned into the character we know today, but it just does not make a lot of sense why these practices were ever "in" since why bother to essencially get the game written twice when it ends up just meddling with the consistency of the intended vision? Why even localize rather than making something up entirely at that point?

​@@lpfan4491 As much as I'm not a fan of localizations, it made some sense in the 80s and 90s. When you had very small gaming companies making games for peanuts by todays standards. And they didn't have the money to hire a regional consultant and a whole team to oversee the translation of the game to English. But by the PS1 era, they definitely had the money. And there was zero excuse by the 2000s with the internet and explosion of game/anime popularity. These days, SquareEnix does have a huge internal Japanese staff dedicated just to overseeing localizations. But notice how the localizations actually got worse. Richard Honeywood is the one who started all the dialect/accent junk in Square games with Chrono Cross and Dragon Quest VIII. But he's been gone for almost 20 years. Yet the head of localiztion in SE ofJapan is the one who keeps pushing for the accents/dialects. And not just in DQ, but it's crept into Final Fantasy, Mana and other IPs. But few people complained about it until recently.

I really hate this trend. Games like Splatoon are also affected, where the previous games clearly defined male/female then was changed to "style" instead. But the worst part has got to be how the localisation changed a female character (who was confirmed as female in the previous game, even on the localised side) to "they/them" for absolutely no reason. They didn't even invent a new story or anything to go with this change, they just straight up changed it because they could.

I think that because people at that time were tolerating it but are growing ever increasingly annoyed. However, more people from other Countries including mine, are starting to take notice that Western activists are forcing many Japanese games to Westernize and censor various things that many people who follow Japanese pop culture like.
