Everything on the set was built, even the robot girl. They thought about resorting to CG for the robot, but wanted it to feel as realistic as possible. In this episode, only the walls in the Red Light, Green Light game are actually green screen. As for the money he requested was 10,000won, not 1,000won so he was spending roughly 18USD for her gift and food. Also, the chant is "moo-goong-hwa ggot-chi pee-yuh-sseub-ni-da (the hibiscus flower has bloomed) and has been used for decades :).

@@rosean374 Oh, it has nothing to do with "stop" and "go" 😂. In Korea, the game is said to have been brought over by the Japanese during the Japanese occupation of Korea. A freedom fighter at that time witnessed children playing this game using a Japanese chant and since it seemed impractical to stop all children from ever playing this game, he decided to revise the chant into one that involves the hibiscus flower, which is the flower representing South Korea. This was especially notable because this flower was used as a symbol all throughout the country during the independence movement.

The biggest thing with the Grandma wasn't the whole idea of being traditional, it was his daughter losing her mother tongue and literally becoming a stranger to him, that kinda hits hard. Especially when she made it out that his daughter is the only thing keeping him alive and he has no other reason for living.

With Ddakji (the paper game they played in the subway) there's a smooth side and a side with the folds. You win the game by switching what side its on, not just flipping it. If you flip it 360 degrees and it lands with the same side up, you lose. It doesn't matter how many times it flips as long as it ends up on the DIFFERENT side than it started.

It only just occurred to me that both of those things happened to me when I was in the hospital to remove my appendix. They gassed me and then changed my clothes while I was out. The thing is, they told me what was happening ahead of time and I had a choice, of course.

@@jgzaz Yeah, it's probably a localization thing so people understand it's like red light, green light. The dub actually has it saying "red light, green light" which honestly changes the game since you don't know when it'll say "red light", in the sub you know when it's going to stop because of the melody. I think they could've left the actual translation, and people would've related it to Red Light, Green Light anyway

You guys should watch Kingdom. It is a Korean zombie show set in the Josun Era. It is stunning and the story has a slight twist to some of the zombie shows that we've seen before. I love it as much as Train to Busan.

So I will say this, if you enjoy watching this with subtitles and are fine with it, I highly recommend watching korean tv shows (dramas). They are some of the best TV I've seen the past few years since they are usually only one season, consisting of 16-20 episodes. So you always get a solid conclusion with these stories and you know its for a limited run. It's not going to go on and on like other shows and you can watch a ton of various genres and concepts. I highly recommend watching Doctor Prisoner, The Guest, Stranger (only show here to have a season 2 so far), While you were sleeping, or Vincenzo. Korean dramas are such an underrated are of TV but truly surpass some of the stuff out in the west.

Yes! Kdramas are great. They get mistaken for all being romcoms and whilst there are some good romcoms out there, there are so many different genres to explore! Completely agree that Vincenzo was one of the standouts of this year. The twists and turns were endless! 365: Repeat the Year and Taxi Driver were some other great dramas that were extremely dark but brilliant recent dramas.

@@kathyrose8750 Taxi Driver was the other one I was thinking of but kept blanking on when I was giving my recommendations. The OCN dramas or the general thriller/mystery stuff can be really well done. The romcoms can be fun too, especially when they have mystery but there are some really entertaining and thrilling shows out there. It's really an underexplored genre here in the west.

@L C Sure but now that they have been exposed to it, it's the highest chance they try something else in the genre. It's why once you usually see your first anime and like it, you are more willing to try things in the genre. I'm giving my recommendations in the hopes that not just them but anyone who comes across it sees it and maybe tries out one of the shows. A lot of them are on netflix too so they can be accessed.

@who cares well if you watch ocn dramas you can avoid that. And there are a lot of cheesy rom com stuff in so many western shows. It's just about finding the right shows for you, just like you would do in western tv

The realism in this show is immaculate and so relatable to the desires of people in power. People watching this show have to realize that using human beings as entertainment happened in the past. Romans had the gladiators and the English had jousting. When you’re rich you’re bored of life and when you’re poor vice versa. The show really makes you question the very existence of human beings and how cruel and desensitized we can become. This show was truly a masterpiece.

The squid game topped Netflix, but in fact, there are shows in Korea that are rated higher than the squid game. It's a show called D.P., and you can think of it as a show like NCIS. I strongly recommend it.

@who cares I personally gotta go with Stranger. Though being more action packed of course there is more focus on the cinematography in Kingdom. But I think the storytelling in Stanger in tighter and the acting is as excellent as Kingdom's. Have you seen Life? Its from the writer of Stranger. Aside from these Comedy shows are also excellent I just adore Prison Playbook and Mr.Queen.

Seriously though. Reacting to K-Dramas is such an untapped market for reactors. A lot of K-Dramas are very popular. I would sacrifice my first born just to get some of these big channels to react to Goblin, Stranger, Mr.Queen, Prison Playbook, Lawless Lawyer, Flower of Evil, Uncanny Counter, Its Okay to not be Okay etc. Just so many great shows to pick from.

Tho, she states the actual price for it is 12,000 won. Also, the smallest Korean banknote is a 1,000 won bill. They've also 5,000 won bill; 10,000 won bill; and the largest banknote is the 50,000 won bill.

So the total amount of prize money for the entire Squid Games is only about $4 million? There have been one hour game shows in the US that can go that high. You'd think with the cost of production and the extreme circumstances going on, there would be a lot more money on the line. I mean, if 15 people survive the games there won't be enough money for them all to get out of debt, that seems kind of absurd.

Someone commented elsewhere, divide the amount of their currency (Korean won) by 1,000, and that will give you a ballpark range in US dollars. That's what I read.

What I also read is that you just remove 3 zeros. And there you go. Much more simple although not very accurate but close enough

Divide by 1000 and take away 10% is usually a good approximation.

oh man, seeing them watch any korean tv only gives me hope for drama reactions edit: also there are many forms of red light green light style games in korean, and the words the doll was saying weren't red light green light, they basically translate to " The Hibiscus Flowers Bloomed" and the rule of the game for the spotter is that they have to say the full line before they can turn around
