If you'd like a really extremely lovely and easy-to-make website, please pop to www.squarespace.com/SquidgeRugby, or use the offer code SQUIDGERUGBY for an exclusive discount.
And again! Turns out we didn't need to wait that long to see it's like again as Scotland won back-to-back games against England for the first time since 1984. So, how did they do it, and how impactful was England bringing off Marcus Smith really?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can have enough money to melt down and hand to the RFU in a few years time.

No, it’s better than that. In his six nations preview video, posted the day before this match, Squidge spent a bit of time explaining Finn’s tactical kicking and how he uses it to “pull opposition players out of position.” Absolutely perfect description. Prescient.

But was this really so intricately planned from the kick off, even including a non-player? I want to say yes because it's beautiful thing but has Squidge jumped the shark with this one? Was it just a happy series of random events combined with a couple of genius acts? Most rugby tries are the latter - (and no TV "journalist" will ever go so deep as to ask Gregor himself)

@@scottgretton2514 I have to agree here. I think he’s looking too much into it that the physio was a pre planned part of this move. Maybe having 2 people in the line out was a pre planned move but I think the physio being there was just a right place right time situation

Except he skipped straight over the fact that Ford took two bad penalties on the right hand side, leaving England outside the 22. Smith had handed responsibility Slade when on that side throughout the match. Agree Smith wasn’t perfect but the calls to have him play 10 are not as finished article but as great talent. This 6N will teach him a lot. Service from Youngs was often terrible. Otherwise completely agree with the analysis. Scotland definitely deserved winners. I absolutely love your analysis of Smith. He showed flashes of brilliance but there were many drawbacks too. Arguably England may have been more likely to win had Ford been starting (I understand why he didn't because experiences like this are going to grow Smith's game massively and he will be better off for it). Russell is the real deal and he's got such a complete game at the moment it is sensational to watch. He's rounded his game out since being at Racing and has such an impeccable rugby brain now. He's always had the eye for a gap and opportunity but he now also has the game management and decision making knowledge AND the complete skillset to execute so many different elements of play and it is a FRIGHTENING combination. I absolutely love watching him play. Saturday was a masterclass. Russell's level has basically made Adam Hastings' international career obsolete, because why would you ever play anybody other than Russell unless he has a beer too many at a training camp?! You've gotta feel sorry for poor Blair Kinghorn. In most eras he would be a generational talent (and his u20 performances emphasised this) but he just so happens to be in a generation that contains Finn Russell and Stuart Hogg. Today make matters even worse, he can't even secure a starting berth on the wing with competition from the likes of Van Der Merwe, Graham, Maitland and more. He's been relegated to a place on the bench and potentially not making it onto the field.

Launchbury is a great player and is being brought into the squad for his experience but also because of the fact that Lawes is still a maybe against Italy. Congrats to Scotland. This is a question for Squidge on the last turnover which he deemed a "Perfectly legal trurnover"? @hernang6006
@hernang6006 2 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with that type of turnover are the referees, depending on the color of the shirt it's a penalty or not, depending of the match it's a penalty or not... and so, that's my biggest problem with the referees, it's not so much if they take a wrong decision, is the lack of consistency in the plays even in the same match, like also happens in scrum penalties, many times a penalty is called for the team that commits the infraction over and over again, just by his shirt color

@@hernang6006 Agree with you there. The breakdown is a mess and Rugby is not a game to be viewed in slow motion as there are so many offences. That last turnover he wasnt supporting his body weight, but great analysis regardless. I knew as soon as the game finished Squidge would highlight Smiths game, he gets a ridiculous amount of hype. Him, Kolbe and LRZ

Completely agree. The zoom even highlighted that his elbows were on the floor beyond the ball

Wouldn't really have mattered if the ref correctly penalised Marler for the 4 scrums he was going at 45 degrees on. I've never seen so much of Maro Itoje head before.

I don’t know if Kolbe and LRZ are overhyped, a wingers job is to score tries and defend the wing, they both do a good job of it. The wing is a very simple position when compared with the fly-half, it’s easy to overhype smith when people look at him like a winger, with his little steps and body feints, but as squidge says, depending on the time and place they can be to the detriment of the team, it’s easy to overhype him because the large majority of people and even pundits don’t truly understand the nuances of the 10 position. It’s why I want to see a truly great game manager like Russell or Sexton as a pundit in the future, they could give a real insight into the role.

Fine margins...how many turnovers has Maro won, with a knee/elbow on another player?

@@elliotbaker5416 I think LRZ definitely is. Everytime he touches the ball commentators go batshit mental, he is very good for his age but he is nowhere near the finished article. Kolbe is one of the best Wingers in the world, but he isn't that good in the air, or defensively that strong. I wouldn't put him in the top 5 players in the world personally. An example of this is was watching France vs Italy game, they were talking about a French Flanker, and then started talking about how he could learn from Kolbe, and how they wish they could have played with him, like that's relevant to anything at all or makes any sense.

If Cowan Dickie had caught that and went 95m to score, that would have been an excellent Big Lad highlight. Instead he reinforced unfair stereotypes

This is, as always, stunningly good and an absolute pleasure. I would also query if Smith looked like a 'headless chook' because the speed of service from Youngs was relatively slow compared with Care at Harlequins?

Incredible analysis as always Squidge. Wish I could see 10% of what you can! Two factual errors: (1) it wasn't Scotland's first back-to-back wins against England since 83-84 because we won in both 2021 and 2022; (2) Scotland next game, against Wales, is at Murrayfield, not Cardiff. (Scotland have alternated between Eng & Fra at home and Wal & Ire at home since before I was born I think (1978).)
