I like when things in an image seem to pop out from a border. Like when a stream of water that looks like it keeps on flowing past the border. And with comic strips, it's more exciting when something goes outside their boxes, like if a character is throwing something and it kinda joins the next box of what is happening next. I like seeing artists go outside the box for comics, it's entertainment to our eyes. I once started creating a comic book when I was in 6th grade. Few years ago, my kids saw my first sketches. My story line needed more work than the drawings, lol.

That is the true meaning of "thinking outside the box" :)

I took art in Middle School and my teacher went over this. She would say "try to fill most of the space and find composition". You've explained it in more depth and the visual demonstration is super helpful! 🙂

These long form videos are so useful! I'm learning stuff I've not seen mentioned anywhere else before. Every source of negative space I've come across only talks about the small areas within a subject. Never seen any source mention anything about how borders come into play. 10/10 will try asap.

Great video man. Negative space can really help me stop thinking about what I’m drawing and see the shapes I need to draw to help with accurate proportions and stuff, but to think about it compositionally is a really great tip! Thank you for another great video.

Well, it IS science and math, but it's also art. Science and Math aren’t rules (though they are sometimes mistakenly described that way). They're just tools to help us describe and understand the world around us. There are SO many variables that influence what we like and don't like! You are absolutely right that we need to keep trying different things and experimenting to find what makes our art special and fun! ❤
@casualmoose3 ай бұрын
this helped a whole lot! like your gouache and watercolor tutorial shorts, you have a great way of breaking down a style or technique so that it makes more sense without making it technical or intimidating to follow along. with the longer videos, it’s really great that you can explain your processes and influences more. thanks so much!

I've been trying to re-take art and it's like, my sketches are looking better already, but I keep feeling like they tend to lack something in general. Gonna try implementing negative space play in practice rounds to see if that's my missing je-ne-sais-quoi. Undoubtedly it's going to help and be fun either way, so why not? Saving this to the essentials playlist in case I ever forget again. :) it's lovely to see you doing longer vids!

Awesome! Another wonderful explanation of something that, as a non-artist in the graphic department, I had no idea existed but that is sure to blow my mind and keep me thinking about it for days 🤩 Also, as a theater actress, I am super interested in all things space and how I can use it to improve my craft. I can't wait to see how I can put this into action on scence! ❤

I really love how this explanation is framed. It's half-explanation, half-exploration, and we get so many details in your thought process over the course of it that it feels like this is stuff we could easily notice and implement ourselves. It's a workshop, not a lecture, where the master isn't telling you what to do or avoid, but just showing you some interesting spots and asking what you could do with that, all Socratic style. And in the end, it feels like the brain just taught itself, which makes it much easier to remember next time! Love your stuff, Scott, you're the best!

I think this is a really great startingpoint for people trying out negative space. When i first learned about it, it was in similar forms as those logos, so i associated it with smart "visual puns", not a general tool in Art. This feels like a way more freeing approach.

One of my art teachers talked a lot about the importance of negative space between objects/subjects when you’re working with multiple objects/subjects as well. The amount of negative space between subjects and the shape of it can really change a piece as well. Like that reference where the person is holding the scroll. That’s a really interesting use of negative space because of the angle of the scroll compared to the person. Changing where subjects/objects are in relation to each other can really change the feel of the piece

I have only learned about negative space in the context of photography, and thought of it as big parts of the image with "nothing". Either for a sense of scale (eg small bird in a blue sky), sense of movement (eg a lot of space behind a running person), for composition (eg placing the object in the golden ratio on the background), or for the purpose of having space for words (like a title cover for a magazine). I love your take on it, thinking of negative space as shapes that can add interest!
