Living on Long Island, New York, I look at St. Patrick's day as an opportunity to remember and to honor all the Irish Immigrants who struggled to come to this country and work and slaved to make this country great. As my ancestors where a part of. No face painting or green beer for me.

Thanks Father Brendan. St.Patrick must have been a very strong man to have endured what he went through. He persevered while working against great odds in what was a pagan country. We owe a great debt of gratitude to St.Patrick.

Thank you for the talk Father Brendan. It is good to be reminded of the deep faith & courage of St Patrick in returning to a country where he was enslaved in order to preach the gospel of Christ out of love for the Irish people. His feast day should be a reminder to go to mass & to keep the faith that he kept & passed on to the Irish people. His mission has continued across the centuries & his fame as a patron saint of Ireland has inspired many others around the world due to Irish missionaries following in his footsteps of faith.

Great to see you back Father. It was only a matter of time. As a musician, a practicing Catholic, and Canadian Irish man living in Japan, I just had an a-ha moment. I've celebrated St. Patrick's Day for over 40 years through the great songs of Ireland, but after hearing your message here today, I do want to get to know St. Patrick (my namesake after my grandfather) better. I repsect your words and message. However, I love the music from Ireland, and better still, I love to sing and play those songs. You may know the title "Lord of the Dance." We had an International Mass here at St. Ignatius and that was the song we played and sang. Actually, we paid homage to St.Patrick on the day. So I'm a little torn. I regard St. Patrick as a saint, but I like to acknowlede the holiday through shared interest in the music of Ireland.

Read up St Patrick’s breastplate- a muscular, powerful prayer. The little excerpt we are familiar with- Christ be beside me - is undervalued. Pray it sincerely this week. It is a profound prayer and worth praying daily. Thank you God and St Patrick.

I will be boycotting St Patrick's Day this year ..though having been given the name Patrick at birth ,it's never been a bigger embarrassment being born to that country...it's effete leadership and corrupt governance is no longer tolerable..I no longer forgive I no longer forget..this island has become a center of intellectual prostitution and no good taste and decency human being would want to be part of it... Best of luck with your colloquium in Maynooth padre...as a priest you have the training to invite sinners...i don't and gave no time for them.

The harsh reality is that Patrick never existed. That’s why it’s a commercial pagan festival. There is no evidence of his existence. There are no ‘original documents’ despite what is said here. The Confessio & Letter to Coroticus are 7th century copies. Even the location of these copies is unclear. Gildas, Bede, Columcille, Adomnan, Columbanus never referred to this mythical Patrick. Time to face the truth & get a real patron saint like Columcill or Columbanus. 😊
@williem1710
@williem1710 5 ай бұрын
I agree. Why was this mysterious Patrick ever picked for patron saint when Ireland has so many saints who really existed? The only mentions of this Patrick beyond the Confessio & the Letter to Coroticus (copies whose provenance is unknown) are the writings in the Book of Armagh by Muirchú & Tierchan in the 9th century. Over 300 years after Patrick! As you point out no one else has written about him. Very strange, is it not?

@@williem1710 The reason for the invention of the Patrick myth in the Book of Armagh in the 9th century was a campaign to get Armagh made the ecclesiastical centre of Ireland. Up until then Christianity in Ireland had no central authority & most importantly Rome had no formal authority. Certain parties in Ireland & elsewhere wanted the Irish to adopt the Roman ecclesiastical model. The invention of the Patrick myth was used to achieve that.
@williem1710
@williem1710 5 ай бұрын
The 5th century Patrick described in the 7th century Confessio & Letter to Coroticus is very different to the Patrick described in the 9th century Book of Armagh. The former is loving & humble, the latter is violent - cursing people, burning books (we are told there were no books in Ireland until Patrick!), setting fires & even killing a couple of princesses. Yet we know nothing of where Patrick came from, where he went after escaping, where he trained as a priest, who ordained him & on whose authority he came to Ireland. Patrick’s predecessor Palladius who was sent to Ireland by Pope Celestine in 431ad was chased out within a year by the High King Lóegaire mac Néill. Yet when Patrick arrives in 432ad the High King runs from him & Patrick wins over the entire Ireland - so we are told in writings centuries later. Those that came after Patrick - Columcille, Columbanus etc - never mentioned this ‘Patrick’ & Columbanus wrote a lot. 😊
