Which are your worst staining colours within your watercolour palette? *Leave me a comment* , so others can be aware of them too.

@@FlidaisPeridotEyes Hi Lina, do you mean if any of my colours here have a blue bias? If so then not really, the colours show here tend to be weighted more to the warmer hues. The other thing is that W&N do the Cotman version as well which I also use and their Phthalo blue is called Intense Blue. Paul 🎨

This would be useful for those using cheaper brands. The manufacturer of my paints have the pigment information on their website. I don't think I'd bother with a brand that didn't supply that sort of information. I'd rather spend my time doing colour mixing swatches.

Thank you Mindy, be careful to not have too many colours, that happened to me many years ago, and I never seem to use them all! LOL

I'm creating a document of all the various paints and colour pencil brands I have, colour by colour, pigment by pigment. I am trying to learn the tricks of the trade. I now watch out for opaques and staining colours because for a learner like myself who makes plenty of errors through lack of experience, they can cause unfixable problems.

Thank you very much Valerie. Yes, there are so many things to consider with the paints we buy and also for the paintings we do with them. Paul :-)

Alizarin Crimson. I’m still trying to get it out of my yellow trousers, despite them being washed numerous times!

Ha, ha, yes, I know what you mean, it is certainly a strong, staining colour. Paul 🎨

I love all these tutorials I’m learning so much. When I brought my first tubes of paint I didn’t even think about their properties, staining and how easy they could be lifted off. Water colour is much more in-depth and versatile than I ever thought but learning through your video’s is brilliant. Thank you 🙂

Hi Charlotte S, thank you very much for your lovely words. Yes, there is quite a lot of things to think about with watercolour, but take it one step at a time and you will get there. Paul 🎨

This was very helpful to me. I have always wanted to do this and now I will. It will be handy to keep a chart like this close while I paint. Thank you Paul.

Thanks - very helpful videos. Would you mind sharing the brand/s of your paints? They are so rich and luminous. Also, I’ve always thought liftability and transparency are two very different qualities. Sadly, the stainers are often the most transparent colours - good for glazing, but not for lifting. (And gamboge in my set is a stainer; maybe gamboge hue isn’t?) Thanks - glad to have discovered you!

Hi Lisa, the brand I use is Winsor & Newton, both the pro version and the student Cotman version. I have a habit of mixing the two together. :-) I agree about the staining colours such as those which are also transparent, I do know that the New Gamboge Hue within the professional range of W&N's colours does stain though. It can be an advantage to have a staining colour at times, depending on the effect you are after of course. Here is my affiliate link to give you some idea which paints these are. bit.ly/2XXFPr2 Thank you for commenting, Paul 🎨

Can we apply varnish to protect our painting. Is it damage our painting sir?
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard of this Ravi, but it isn't something I have ever tried and certainly wouldn't wish to try. I don't know the longevity of the varnish, plus popping your painting behind non-reflective glass works well for most people anyway. Paul 🎨
