I had the same problem with binding. I filed the leading edge of the cap iron to a sharp bevel to imitate a chip breaker. It worked.

Thanks much for sharing your expertise! I am restoring my first No. 78 and you have helped me tune it a great deal.

I have just purchased one of these new from eBay. It hasn’t arrived yet. This video was helpful in what I should look out for. I’ll be making these modifications.

Thanks for the tips. I have been getting into making picture frames and it is that back rabbet that I seem to have the most trouble with. I think being able to take the process slower using a hand plane will resolve my issues. Now to convince my wife to let me buy yet ANOTHER plane.... :). Thanks again!

That birch is lovely. Such a shine when it meets a razor sharp iron. I think all of these combination planes can be a little tricky. My Record 044 is extremely hard to keep square, but by no fault of the plane, I don't think. It just requires a TON of user skill, much beyond what a standard bench plane would require. Cool video. Next stop: draw knife video!! (PLEASE!)

+Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan Oh yeah draw knife.. haha You have a 78 in bad condition right? It's a plane that the owner need to really get to know.

Yes, get at the drawknife. I have some great footage for part 1. It will also give your views and subs another boost! like the razor video did. I do have a 78 to restore. We will see how that one goes! haha

I like your mods and tips; but overall the Record 778 is a much better plane. The fence runs along two posts so it’s longer and much more rigid. Plus the blade has a screw adjuster which is easier to tweak.

If you are still having trouble keeping the side of the rabbet square, the first thing I would suggest is keeping your blade slightly proud of the body. Your fence is your reference surface rather than the side of the plane. If you try to keep the blade flush with the side of the plane body, you tend to get a stepped or sloping rabbet wall.

Yes good tip. I do keep it a Little proud. I think my next modification will be to flatten the frog surface to make sure the blade isn't moving after setting it. SO purhaps if that is my problem that trend you speak of is my problem but because of blade movement

@@111raybartlett ah, yeah. Those Stanley planes probably aren't the best machines things out there. I have a newer Veritas. Took me a while to get the hang of it... a long while.

Smart mod. As the saying goes "if it's not broke fix it"

What a wonderful little plane this is. I was able to make a perfect cross-grain rabbet as a beginner with just a little bit of patience. And I have some advice if your width stop is rattling like mine. Put a thin metal stick (such as a thin screwdriver) through the hole on that pole for the width stop, and twist it. Well I guess that’s what the hole is for actually, so it’s not really a tip. Do you have any advice for positioning the stops straight when locking them? I use a small hammer to adjust them but it takes some time. The screws’ torque tends to twist the stops too if you let it. People sell old no. 78s for as low as 30 bucks where I live but the stops are often missing.

maybe honing the body might give you a square rebate: you also seem to be getting slight tear out on your inside edge. try honing the body

After this video I did deburr some of the body's edges that helped. but a full honing would have don it too

i don't know if i may be of use to you or your viewers but i just started making reproduction of the depth stop . also many of the clones of this plane the the stops alignment groove on the other side of the screw hole (proprietary stuff so you'd have to get parts from them i suppose) i can make throws as well. there's a lot of them missing and i hate to see good tools go unused . if its ok can i add a link to my listing? ill give every one a discount that comes from here.

does your fence moves a little bit even if you tight it well?
