A Federation starship that has multiple roles such as a warship, carrier and exploration has made this my favorite class of ships. This ship deserves to be a hero ship so hopefully that comes to pass someday. When i dream of being a Starfleet Captain this is my class of choice

The Akira-class is my all time favourites Star Trek starship class. When I started writing Trek fan fiction I immediately knew I'd be setting it aboard an Akira.

The Akira was a very nicely thought out ship. Aesthetically pleasing while still practical for combat. Definitely one of my favorite class of Federation ships.

Hands down my favorite ship

The first time I ever saw the Akira class was in DS9 and again during the battle against the Borg cube in Star Trek:First Contact during the battle of Sector 001 as there were numerous Akira class Starships along with numerous Saber class and Steamrunner class Starships and the first appearance of the Sovereign Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E that arrived to turn the tide of the battle.

This is one of my absolute favorite ships in the ST universe. I love the update of it in STO the Alita class. Massive torpedo boat, but it also has very powerful phasers, having the same class of phasers on the galaxy class.

The Akira and the Sabre class are my two favorite Star Trek Designs.

True story, in the production of First Contact, it got the name because Brannon Braga was a fan of the anime of the same name.

My favorite starship class..

No one has adequately explained why it has a flight deck through the middle of the saucer, though if I were a pilot I'm sure I'd prefer it to a shuttle bay. I wish there were more videos showing the multi torpedo launches from 15 torpedo tubes. It would look amazing. The bombardment from several Akita's would make my day.

I love these videos. Brief and informative. Plus, I think the Akira is a fantastic design; I like how it shares a clear lineage with the NX.

In STO I like this ship. As really it was because of the fact it could carry a small squad of fighters. Though really my love is to that of the Jupiter Class. Not the old design but the new one that was released a couple of years ago to replace the old larger Dreadnaught Class. Jupiter Class was reclassed as a Carrier. Though outside of that. Jupiter Class is one of Star Trek Online and was redesigned in a contest that fans picked the winner. It doesn't have that much in the way of history.

I love the Akira class, it's my main ship in Star Trek Online, I call her the USS Shore.

I love the Akira Class. I collect Eaglemoss Star Trek models and have several nice ones. But for someone the Akira class Thunderchild XL model is my favorite one. Its a beautiful design. One of the best designs in all of Star Trek history

This ship has always been one of my favorite designs in star trek and I'm glad to own the eaglemoss model.

Quick note-the akira class actually has 19 torpedo launchers. In addition to the 13 on the sail and the two along the ventral bow, there are actually 4 broadside launchers at midships that most people forget about or outright don't know about due to the fact that, thanks to the higher agility of capital ships in star trek, ordnance launchers are only needed along the fore and aft quarters. Otherwise, great video as always. Keep up the great work!

a full spread fronm all launchers.... its glorious!....had one of these in a ds9 game we played a few years ago. in just a few rounds you deplete your entire torpedo loadout and your left firing probes and shit at the dominion just to keep em ducking... good times......

I ordered a die cast figurine of an Akira from Eaglemoss a long time ago, and the booklet that came with it had a lot of awesome behind the scenes information about the ships design that only further cemented it’s place as my favorite ship in all of Star Trek. For example, the Akira was fitted with broadside torpedo launchers. It could literally fire torpedoes in every direction! I would have loved to have seen that feature in use on screen

I like it and the steamrunner class

Still absolutely love this breakdown. Wish it could be updated with the new Spacedock visuals and expanded (although I don't know with what... I mean including the chain reaction pulsar from Armada is pretty deep in the weeds!) And the design...! Easily one of the best ever for all of Star Trek. The nacelles are just brilliant design, the deflector placement is unique, and I love the mission/torpedo pod.

Looks like an awesome ship of war. Just wish this episode were longer.

My familiarity with this ship comes mostly from the Flash Trek: Broken Mirror. A damn good game that you should totally look up if you are unfamiliar with the games. In the game, she was a long range torpedo boat. Amassing a fleet of them in a system would turn the system into a torpedo quagmire in very short order. In fact, my familiarity with most star trek ships comes from that game. Just as in the series, different vessels had the ability to equip different weapons. Smaller ships could not have transphasic torpedoes or the Borg cutting beam, for example. My favorite ship to use is the galaxy class dreadnaught hidden somewhere in the Paso system. A drawback of the game is that no matter how big your ship is, you can only have 3 weapons slots, which really hampered the brutal effectiveness of this particular ship. There is a whole wiki on the game and everything. Its an online flash game, but I promise it is super fun! It is basically the grandfather of the Space RP3 3 mobile app, which is also totally worth checking out.

It was originally designed as a light carrier / torp boat. It is beautiful and versatile.

I've always loved the Akira-class. I know the game doesn't have a good reputation, but in Star Trek: Legacy - this thing was an Angel of Death against the Borg (or, really, any ship you could take down the shields with - but especially the Borg). You can just hammer photon torpedoes into them all day long. Saucer also gave is good phaser coverage. It's a shame you don't see it more often.

I played an early Star Trek game (CD-ROM) and the Akira was the best ship to construct, especially because a lot of them could be built for the same costs as a Sovereign. They, and the torpedo class Steamrunners did more damage than all the other classes combined.

My stand out favourite starfleet ship

With the hangar opening in the front I’ve wondered if Starfleet would ever consider refitting a Galaxy, or Nebula class Saucer to incorporate forward facing launch bays. With the size of the saucer, and how much room I’ve seen on some schematics showing large shuttle bays inside, these could be used to rapidly deploy fighters to soften targets, or in cases like the Cardassians, provoke them enough to create an opening in their lines.

I really like the Akira, it's probably my favorite Federation ship. I have a tendency to prefer the mean looking military ships over the hero ship, and the Akira is just that.

"Warship". Also, tons of windows and things sticking out that can be shot off. But at least the crew can sip wine while seeing the stars on their last night before being assimilated.

I've always assumed that there were two variants of this ship. One of them would be a Heavy Carrier and the second would be a Medium Carrier.

I always find the crew compliments of these ships really high. They are highly automated. Sure you need people to fix things, and to keep it running. But 500? I would think, even taking crew shifts in mind, that 200 would be closer.

I only wish we got more of this ship design on DS9. They could have used one as Admiral Ross's flag ship or something giving us the opportunity to see the inside and see it doing more things then getting shot down.
