As the start to my Star Wars: Jedi Knight series reviews, I of course, needed to start with Star Wars: Dark Forces, a shooter inspired by Wolfenstein 3D and Doom and debut of the iconic Expanded Universe character Kyle Katarn. Join me, as we experience the start of Kyle Katarn's journey to shut down the Imperial Dark Trooper project (The Mandalorian ripped it off).
Game Description:
Star Wars: Dark Forces is a first-person shooter video game developed and published by LucasArts. It was released in 1995 for MS-DOS and Macintosh, and in 1996 for the PlayStation. The story is set in the fictional Star Wars expanded universe and begins shortly before the original Star Wars film, before flashing forward to a year after the film's events. The game's protagonist and playable character is Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working on behalf of the Rebel Alliance who discovers the Galactic Empire's secret Dark Trooper Project, which involves the development of a series of powerful new battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers.
Dark Forces uses the Jedi game engine, which was developed specifically for the game. The engine adds gameplay features that were uncommon to the first-person shooter genre at the time of release, including level designs with multiple floors, and the ability to look up and down. Because of the two games' similarities, Dark Forces has often been called a Doom clone, though the latter lacked several technical features that Dark Forces introduced.
Upon release, the PC version of the game received largely favorable reviews from critics, who praised its level design and technological advances; the other versions received mixed reviews, with the PlayStation version in particular being criticized for its graphics and slow frame rates. It also did well financially, selling almost 1 million copies in the United States by 1999. The game's success launched the Star Wars: Jedi Knight series, beginning with the direct sequel Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II in 1997.

A remake or remastered version of the game would be nice to see with improved graphics. Kyle Katarn is essentially the Rambo of the Star Wars, and he and Jan Ors are much better than the entire crew of Rogue One.

Not sure about this game but DF2 and Mysteries of The Sith both have some decent graphics mods that make the games look incredibly nice and add some quality of life improvements like an fov slider.

A remaster would mean too many changes, like the KOTOR remake is gonna get. Besides, Disney still keeps running away from the Legends banner they themselves invented, so who cares.

There were 2 fan remakes in the works at different points in time that I'm aware of: one was a Jedi Academy Mod (I think about half of Dark Forces 1's levels was remade in Academy) as well as an Unreal Engine remake (which only did Level Design without much gameplay before it shut down).

Yeah I am with you on the Dark Troopers in the Mandalorian. They were too scrawny to be Phase 2s or Phase 3s, plus they lacked the firepower of both.

Newcanon's version of the Dark Troopers is an interesting inversion of the OG EU versions. Those started as horrible cyborgs made from badly wounded clones, (Seen in OG Battlefront games and the Purge Troopers in Force Unleased according to the artbook) but progressed into droids, and from droids progressed into Power Armor, whreas the Mandalorian version of Dark Trooper power armor seems to be an older product that Gideon went back to after the Droids failed, rather than an intended end-goal, since the Droids eliminating the need for organic operators/organic parts in a cyborg was describes as "Perfection."

Jerec was away from the Republic during the war, he gets mentioned once in IIRC a republic comic or a novel but he's away. Morgan Katarn was just a farmer. Possibly descended from a jedi washout in the Agricorps but never got involved in the war itself.

By the way, there are three dark focres audio dramas meant to flesh out the entire story including the backstory of Kyle katarn they are very good and I highly recommend you give them a listen. You should be able to find them on KZfaq

I'd only accept a remaster IF it had the Legends banner. That banner is the last hope EU fans have for getting our stories continued AS Legends, and Lucasfilm just keeps avoiding it. I hate Disney Star Wars.

Why do you keep repeating the same statement over and over again in all the videos with you the comments, men? Nothing is going go change about that. If you can't be happy what you got already in this sad state, then you need to get away from Star Wars and find some hobbies or other franchises.

21:07 The elevator trick is only needed to get around one door/shield that the enemy control from the inside. Stormtroopers just have the officer of the watch let them in.

I am Doom player. I completed Plutonia on Ultra-violence if you know what is it. You are wrong about DOOM pistol. It's useful until you get chain-gun. After chain-gun it's completely useless. Chain-gun uses same ammo as pistol but does more damage. Shotgun ammo is limited and pistol is actually decent if you know how to shoot it correctly. You need to let animation play fully and it will be always hitting the center. Well it's mostly used to spend 1 bullet on switches. You also did not mention that fist and melee weapons in 1st person shooters are even more problematic. Fist are useless in Dark Forces kinda. In doom chainsaw and fist can be great. Fist can be super great if you get berserk power up. Also Dark Forces have problem same as Doom engine. They can't put floor above floor and Doom at least sometimes get illusion of this if it uses teleporters. 1st game to do room above room was Duke Nukem 3d if I remember correctly. Also Dark forces engine has really hard time finding port to stretch screen.
