Well said, man. Why do people complain about the CGI in the prequels where they don't seem to have a problem with the CGI in movies like the Marvel films? Villains like Thanos and Ultron, for example, were done with CGI, and they still hold up.

I see and hear people complain about Marvels CGI all the time. That being said, the prequels CGI was revolutionary and I think you’re right that it held up extremely well. Hell, as much as I hate Jar Jar I can’t deny I’m always amazed at how good he looks for 90s visual effects. I just wish they didn’t use so much green/blue screen. Really takes me out of my favourite scenes in those films how fake the background looks most of the time. Not a prequel hater btw, I quite enjoy them, but even I can see the flaws and why others wouldn’t like them.

I'm glad the Prequels have become more appreciated now, good old George Lucas is not the best at dialogue, but damn is he sure great at setting up the tangled web of the Siths' return, and the Jedis' failure, all wrapped around one emotionally tangled and conflicted man. I'm a prequel fan and a semi-sequel hater. I liked TFA initially but in context, it's easy to see the flaws. For some bizarre reason I liked TLJ when I first saw it but I couldn't help but notice the movie constantly switches between like 3 locations the entire time and the plot twists were kinda dumb. TRoS was confusing to me anyway so I definitely didn't need other people's criticisms to see that movie's flaws.

All good points Also it is worth mentioning that when it comes to people mentioning dialogue haters almost never give specific examples and the ones they do can be easily debunked and explained. So it can help to demand evidence when they bring it up and give examples of good dialogue as well as dialogue within the OT (plus the dialogue is a stylistic choice that fits the movie that Lucas was trying to make and the context it’s in). That is a good point about them not being able to prove or have evidence for anything or understanding anything. There is also the point that many people enjoy the prequels and fine them very good which is also worth bringing up sometimes. Like if a hater says they are boring then you could easily say that not everyone agrees with them given what is entertaining to a person can be subjective and many find them entertaining and far from boring. Plus there is many evidence to disprove any notions of “boring” or otherwise.
@jamessteadman933
@jamessteadman933 Жыл бұрын
Dialogue is not easily debunked, as there isn't a single objective way to write dialogue, and a lot of the effectiveness of dialogue comes from the context within the scene, and less about what is being said at face value. What can be measured more intuitively is the strength of the delivery. The way these 'stylistic' lines are written delivered, and directed are often very flat, which reduces tension in scenes. A lot of people overlook general screenwriting and directing principles that increase the quality of scenes in movies. It's the reason why breaking bad scenes are so rewatchable, and why famous lines are so quotable. An obvious principle is to make your characters seem like they care about what's going on. For example, the effectiveness of the underwater chase scene in the phantom menace was diminished by the lack of emotional engagement present in the characters (except for Jar Jar I guess). They didn't seem worried about the situation, so why should the audience be worried? This is a recurring issue in these movies. In contrast, look at the scene in ESB where the main characters were entering an asteroid field. Everybody seemed panicked as C3PO yelled out the odds of surviving an asteroid field, which then brought out Han's famous 'never tell me the odds' line. Again, the line at face value might not seem that special, but it's a heroic line that raises the stakes of the scene with charismatic delivery from Harrison ford, which is why it is viewed as such an effective line of dialogue. In comparison, nothing from AOTC or TPM comes with this amount of charm. I'm gonna end with a final thought: film is subjective. While there are guidelines for dialogue and other screenwriting principles, the breaking of some of these principles may not bother some people, which is totally fine. The fact that these movies consistently breaks a lot of these principles is why a lot of people don't like them. Which is also fine. When people make movie reviews, they lay out what worked for them, and what didn't. It's not some kind of personal attack (for the most part). Thus, people who criticize these movies shouldn't be automatically labelled as 'prequel haters'. It's a huge generalization.

What can be measured more intuitively is the strength of the delivery. The way these 'stylistic' lines are written delivered, and directed are often very flat, which reduces tension in scenes.* Ummmm yes they are very easily debunkable. All you do is take quotes out of context and just say "they're awkward and stilted." The reason "I don't like sand "is a bad line: because you say it's a bad line. How do these lines come off as stilted an awkward exactly??? This is exactly what I'm talking about. You're just arbitrarily saying that it's bad. I could just as easily do the same thing with the original trilogy."You scruffy looking nerf-herder" was pretty bloody awful yet you don't acknowledge similar cringely lines in the original trilogy because it goes against your narrative. Plus there's something that you're not addressing: just because something is cheesy does not make it bad. You know what else is cheesy: pizza. Everybody loves pizza and it's cheesy as hell. *An obvious principle is to make your characters seem like they care about what's going on. Again, the line at face value might not seem that special, but it's a heroic line that raises the stakes of the scene with charismatic delivery from Harrison ford, which is why it is viewed as such an effective line of dialogue.* This is a massive false equivalence. The underwater scene in the Phantom Menace and the asteroid seen an Empire strikes back are completely different and they don't at all serve the same purpose. The underwater scene was never meant to be tense in the same way. The goal of that scene was to give an in-depth character deep dive (no pun intended) for Jar Jar, Obi-Wan, and Qui-Gon. We get a very firm grasp of their back stories, their dynamics together, and their motivations. I like the little detail of showing the master and student dynamic between the Jedi characters. It does a lot to set up their fate in the final battle of the movie. Plus, there is tension in the scene… It's just expressed differently given that the two Jedi are war monks that suppress their emotions. So expecting the Jedi characters to come off the same way as Han Solo is quite frankly missing the point. And if you wanna talk about steaks in the original trilogy… They're not nearly as high as you think they are. You say that the scene is tense, yet throughout the entire trilogy the storm troopers provide absolutely zero tension or steaks to the entire thing. It gets so bad that our main characters don't even bother taking cover when storm troopers fire at them. The only time our heroes actually get harmed by storm troopers at the very end when Leia gets shot... Which she pretty much recovers from as if nothing ever happened. On the other hand, the asteroid seeing an empire was meant mostly to be an action scene, with the added bonus of enduring us to Han Solo a little bit by showing us how cool of a pilot he is. But this was not something that the movie absolutely needed, but it still benefit from it. *In comparison, nothing from AOTC or TPM comes with this amount of charm.* Do you know what you're absolutely right. The prequel had absolutely no charm whatsoever. The biggest problem is that they didn't have enough incest. The part where Luke lusts over his sister and where she repeatedly reciprocates his feelings is exactly why the Empire strikes back is the best movie evar. Too bad Padme was not Ankain's [step] sister. Not having incest in the Episodes I-III was such a crippling blow to the films quality. And the part where Luke says "well I'm going to Tashi station to pick up some power converters" was such a perfect line. Oh don't forget the part where Leia says "someone who loves you" when saving Han Solo. Plus the prequel's have such a lack of charm that nobody regurgitates those lines over and over. I mean seriously… Who says "I have the High Ground" or "Hello There" in casual conversation??/s *I'm gonna end with a final thought: film is subjective. While there are guidelines for dialogue and other screenwriting principles, the breaking of some of these principles may not bother some people, which is totally fine. The fact that these movies consistently breaks a lot of these principles is why a lot of people don't like them. Which is also fine. When people make movie reviews, they lay out what worked for them, and what didn't.* I'm gonna end you on this final thought: film is *not* subjective. There are objective metrics for measuring world building, character consistency, plot progression, etc. Which the prequel trilogy passes those with flying colors. And while there's a lot of people that don't like them, there are far more people who like them. In fact it's quite trendy to say that the prequel trilogy is the best trilogy now. There is a poll that strongly proves this. It was done by Star Wars theory Star Wars theory, by far the biggest Star Wars channel. Here is three times the subscribers of red letter media. Hilarious how nobody that doesn't like the prequels doesn't acknowledge anything that the prequels did particularly well. And it's not like I can't see that the prequels have flaws. They do have issues. But the issues that you bring up are just simply not valid. George Lucas was not surrounded by Yes Man, the prequel trilogy did not over use CGI, and Anakin was not ruined by these films. I can go into more detail... Where are you end up doing is saying something snarky like "just because it's original doesn't mean it's good." To which I would say "just because it's original does not mean it's bad." All that matters at the end of the day is the execution… But your attempts to prove why they suck are vague and unconvincing (as Rogue One might say). *It's not some kind of personal attack (for the most part).* So it is a personal attack… Just some of the time. Nice to know you have no integrity whatsoever. I mean come on guys… If you're gonna steal my right to enjoy these movies at least put in some amount of effort. *Thus, people who criticize these movies shouldn't be automatically labelled as 'prequel haters'. It's a huge generalization.* I think this might be the closest thing to being a valid point. There is a distinction between people who fairly criticize the movies and those who are just "prequel haters". Good job on this part. But then again, a broken clock is right two times a day. With that being said, the biggest problem is that the vast majority of the hatred for the prequels is done in VERY poor faith. You're gonna have a very hard time convincing me that ruining Jake Lloyd's life somehow made the prequels stronger. Now people on the other side of the aisle will say something cheesy like "we're passionate about Star Wars so it's OK to be toxic." You want to know who else was passionate? Ted Bundy! He was very passionate about women...so much so that he killed dozen of them. Just because you're passionate about something doesn't mean that you shouldn't be held accountable. And the fact that the biggest critics of the prequels don't ever hold themselves to a higher standard is an issue. Look nobody's telling you to like these movies. If you wanna just watch the OT and ST and skip the PT.....THEN NOBODY IS STOPPING YOU. BUT Don't do this thing that we all have to validate your own disappointment with the movies. I love the Star Wars prequel trilogy and if that bothers you… You shouldn't be on this platform. MTFBWU

@@user-ek8ps1yl3n Film IS subjective. It's why you like the prequels and I don't (with the exception of ROTS). As with all art, there is a certain amount of objectivity to film criticism. (You can't turn in a blank palette at a museum and expect it to be displayed). However, along with plenty other subjective metrics, the weighing of these objective metrics differs from person to person. Also, I was not trying to claim that the prequels have bad dialogue, as I recognize the original movies had some odd lines here and there as well. I was just pointing out that the delivery of some of the seemingly cornier lines was much stronger in the originals. Again, you might not agree because film is ultimately subjective. Also the Star Wars Theory poll thing seems very biased as the poll was posted by a massive prequel fan who would attract an audience with similar likings, but that's besides the point. You seemed to misjudge what I meant when I said "It's not a personal attack (for the most part)". By "for the most part", I am excluding those "fans" who do actually attack people for liking the movies. I suppose I could have worded that slightly differently. I'll admit, my comparison between the Jar Jar scene and the asteroid scene in ESB was not the best choice. However, I still think the prequels suffered from a lack of energy that made a lot of action scenes less enjoyable (the asteroid scene in AOTC, for example). And yes, I acknowledge that the Jedi are supposed to be composed, but I feel that there's a way to do it well, and the prequels did not hit the mark for me. It's why the Anakin vs Dooku duel in AOTC was less enjoyable in comparison to the duel in ESB. In ESB there was dialogue, emotion, and character, not to mention the big plot twist at the end. I will say, however that AOTC was the worst of the three for me, and the duel in the phantom menace, and to an extent the duels in ROTS both did a much better job at those things. My general point still stands, though.

The reality is all the nitpicks from online wannabe filmmakers started because the prequel screenplays were boring which led to guys looking to express these feelings through something more intricate than "It was boring". We had 10 years of people connecting online over how empty they felt watching the prequels which easily sells negativity to the pseudo-intellectual pockets on the internet. In male dominated internet communities, not liking things has a connotation with being smarter than others so it was even easier to funnel hatred for the prequels with a silly movie review. Meanwhile, the TikTok generation doesn't buy into nerd negativity as much which created a second wind of love for 1-3.

For the "same franchise, same standards" challenge: Could one argue that both the OT and the prequels suck because their protagonists are whiny (not my personal belief, just a hypothetical point)? Like, what if someone just hates Star Wars altogether? Because, then their hatred for the prequels is technically justified, so long as they also hate the OT.

@@firestriker3580 I also don't think it's justified, because I don't accept the premise that Anakin and Luke were whiny. But if someone else did accept that premise, then they could conclude that the PT is bad on the basis of an unlikeable protagonist if such is their standard for protagonists that it would irredeemably ruin their experience with any piece of fiction, so long as they also find their experience with the OT irredeemably poor for the same reasons, *and* so long as they also accept the _second_ premise that Anakin's and Luke's behaviors aren't distinguished from one another. But, to challenge that second premise, because I've had some time to deliberate on the matter, I would actually argue that Anakin's ill-temper, while perhaps unlikeable to some, has a greater purpose than Luke's, because those are the seeds for Anakin's rejection of the Jedi Order's dogma, whereas Luke is petulant because... reasons? Relatability I guess? It's his impatience, not his whining that hinders Luke from truly becoming a Jedi in Episode V, so I dunno why Luke acts like such a child in Episode IV other than just being kind of relatable. Either way, it's fine for people to dislike Anakin or Luke, because that's how taste in media works, but there's no way they can call Anakin's impetuous behavior an objective mistake (and it's often blown out of proportion when being described, because it's really not that intrusive in the first place) because it was quite intentional and serves an important purpose for his turn to the dark side.

You summed up pretty well why Prequel Hate arguments don't hold water. And yes I grew up with TCW and I like it. But I admit it have some changes from the EU that I dosagree with and although Anakin in the show is not better than in the movie I still think he had some iteresting moments. Aldo the warcrome thing is kunda wierd. One could argue that he is giving into the dark side, but in the movies after every terrible thing he done he reacted to it. I guess force choking Poggle is not a bad thing.

In the Revenge of the Sith novelization Anakin treats Padmé very badly, he acts on the verge of abuse with her and before she tells him that she's pregnant, he accuses her of cheating on him. Since I’m a huge fan of the Anakin x Padmé couple, I much prefer the way Anakin and Padmé are represented in the movies, because in the movies Anakin is always kind and sweet with her until he falls to the Dark Side, so I much prefer this version of Anakin over that of the novel. However, this does not alter the fact that in the novel there is a lot of interesting information, which I integrate in my head-canon, such as the idea that Anakin wanted to be promoted to the rank of master to access the forbidden section of the archives of the Temple.

I liked how how horrible and into himself he was as he became Vader; the confidence after he “killed the dragon” which was his fear, further divided Anakin and Vader into separate personalities. I thought the cheating bit was due to Anakin becoming paranoid by Palpatines “advice.” Anyways I just started the EU after being brainwashed that it was garbage by new fanatics. I am excited to read more

There is no such thing as too much CGI there is only good CGI and bad CGI. Most of the complaints I've seen have more to do with writing and Directing than CGI itself, a perfect example is Avatar. That movie is like 90 percent CGI, the movie is rightfully critiqued a lot but no one in their right mind would say the CGI made it worse, in fact, it is probably its biggest strength. I really liked TCW but I think it was a big mistake. It seriously damaged the lore and laid the groundwork for future Disney garbage.

The OT seems like generic random nonsense without the prequels. Still good movies, but disconnected. Vader goes from a mildly concerned calculating mad dog, to a ruthless level headed cold blooded killer who is randomly the hero's dad, and then he is suddenly a conflicted tragic villain. The inconsistency doesn't make the most sense on it's own, but if you watch Revenge of the Sith you see him embody all those traits, and understand why he wouldn't care about the Empire until he meets his son, and why he would still feel conflicted about something he isn't invested in... Because he's been hooked on career performance his entire life, hence his Episode IV characteristics. He's been placating his guilt for betraying his friends by committing to a persona of evil and burying his pain beneath a monster, making up for a feeling of lacking control by manipulating the fear in others, hence his Episode V demeanor in response to discovering Luke is Anakin's son. He wants to convert Luke to evil to validate his own choices and mistakes, and when he can't he finally sees his choices were always a form of denial of his true feelings, which Luke sensed in him. And together those qualities clarify his Episode VI conflict. There's a vague arc that seems like wishy washy convenient post plot twist course correction that becomes crystal clear when you see where he came from. It takes something that seems spontaneous and shows how well it was actually planned out. George would always have to explain the trajectory of Vader's development, and always said there was a missing element of the originals he wanted have clarified when he was making the prequels. Everything he did with Anakin in the PT was to reenforce the way Vader was depicted in the OT. People thought he was a great villain because he was anything and everything to anyone with a scary design and voice, but George wanted Vader to have a very specific tragedy behind him, and that truly made him the best written villain in a beautifully crafted concrete manner. It's the exact opposite of how the ST builds off the OT, retroactively making it seem pointless in Episode VII, even trying to make it seem politically incorrect in Episode VIII, and then finally mocking it in Episode IX. Every episode of the PT added to and enriched the OT. I'd consider myself an OT purist, and that's why I love the PT and hate the ST. People who hate the PT are posers, not purists. Not Star Wars fans, but 80's movies fans. People who love the ST love them because they remind them of when they thought the OT was a mindless action film and not a deeply profound story of a fallen hero's redemption.

This is unwise, but I am going to try to respond to your points: 1. The argument isn’t that Lucas used CGI because he was lazy. It’s just that it looks bad. Yes he helped progress the medium but that doesn’t change the fact that the overuse of special effects negatively affects the overall product of the prequels. First does not mean good. And people misreading physical models as CGI doesn’t invalidate their criticisms of visuals taking them out of the story. If it looks bad, it looks bad, CGI or not Ok, just cuz something is hard, doesn’t mean it’s good. Yes, overuse of CGI is an oversimplification but it boils down to the special effects (practical or CGI) looking bad/not aging well, which I don’t think is really arguable 2. Fair that people should research more before making judgement calls on Lucas’ moral standing. But I would say that “no prequel haters watch the featurettes” is an over generalization 3. This just comes down to personal taste. I think the dialogue and acting in the prequels is stilted and wooden but that’s just me and anyone can feel what they feel 4. As a kid, I liked the prequels and then fell out of love with them as I got older. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Episode 1 but episode 2 is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. But I do take umbrage with your diagnosis of the Clone Wars. I found Anakin’s character and his relationship with Padme make much more sense in the show than the films. The chip complaint is a mixed bag. Depending on who you ask, the chips existed from the beginning or they were made up by TCW. And maybe I’m a little too forgiving to the writers’ whims but I think saving some clones for later stories is fair Now I know you didn’t say this but I’ve had friends who do say TCW retroactively improves the prequels: TCW can make you enjoy the prequels more but it doesn’t improve the quality of those films because the show didn’t exist when the films were made 5. No I won’t hold the prequels to the same standards as the OT because they were made in different contexts at different times. Historical context is important. For example, Since you mentioned it before, T2 looked good for the time, but the metal effects would be considered bad if it came out today. Another example, Citizen Kane is considered one of the greatest films of all time. I watched it. It’s fine. But for when it came out, it was groundbreaking. Things we take for granted now we’re totally new in that film. So we need the history to fully appreciate that film. Now more specifically: I haven’t heard people complain about final fight swinging being unrealistic, that is dumb. But it does look goofy In terms of the antagonists being under developed, Maul is fine. He’s dark and cool and serves a purpose. Maybe underutilized but whatever. Grievous tho has basically no purpose in the film. He’s cool, but if we’re not counting EU territory, he doesn’t contribute to the story or themes of Episode 3 at all. He just takes up time and sets Obi Wan up with a way to escape Order 66. But Dooku definitely should have more characterization! He is an ex Jedi and an important political figure in the separatist movement. Going deeper into his motivations could do a great job in exposing The hypocrisy of the Jedi order Not all bad guys need deep, rich backstories, but they do need purposes for taking up time in a film And the whatabout-isms levied towards the OT and the sequel trilogy don’t invalidate any of the criticisms of the prequels. You’re assuming a lot of positions that people hold 6. The prequels were made after the OT. They will mostly be viewed in the context of already knowing the OT. So criticisms based on that are valid. Watching 1-6 is also valid. I’ve done both. I saw all these movies at such a young age I don’t even remember seeing any of them for the first time. There is no real way of how you’re “supposed to watch them”. 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 is one way. 4-6, 1-3, 7-9 is another way. Hell! For younger kids, 7-9 might be the first ones they see. Everyone has their own experience with the series Btw, I love KOTOR 7. Idk people who say that the biggest part of Vader’s personality is being a badass, but I’ll take your word for it. That is shallow. I already said that what about-isms annoy me but I’ll play. I won’t defend episodes 8 or 9 but I do think 7 is actually a pretty good reintroduction to the Star Wars universe after 15 years of no mainline films Whenever midichlorions were conceptualized, the concept still overcomplicates the universe and contributes to the weird relationship Star Wars already has with eugenics. Lucas was right to keep them out of the OT. 8. George Lucas is not god of Star Wars. His opinion matters but it isn’t the only one that matters And I think he would agree with me. The universe of Star Wars is extremely malleable. For instance, there are in-universe reasons for Mace Windu having a purple light saber. But what is the real reason? Samuel Jackson wanted one. They figured out why later. And that’s fine. Art is a collaboration. Auteurs aren’t real 9. Different people find different things boring. This is true. I find Episodes 2 and 3 boring, but that’s me. I agree people should judge things on a case by case basis. But that romance, I cannot abide by it! Natalie Portman and Hayden Christianson have no chemistry. But let’s be more specific. One of the first things Anakin says to Padme after 10 years is that he thinks about her everyday and she is in his dreams. Ew! What about “I’m haunted by the kiss you should never have given me.” That’s not tragically romantic. It’s negging. The only real quality time they have together before GETTING MARRIED is at the vacation home and what do they do? Eat in silence and lay in the grass and discuss how Anakin is a low key crypto fascist. “What if people don’t agree?” “Then they should be made to!” No anakin! And Padme is a straight up adult at this point. She would not have time for his bullshit 10. I won’t defend Cosmonaut. Idk him or his video. Not important. Tho i can tell the “they rejected him because he was too evil” was obviously a joke. Yes it was cuz he was too old but also because they sensed darkness in him, which is what I’m guessing he’s joking about But I will say that factual errors don’t make criticisms invalid. Most of the issues people have with the prequels aren’t that they don’t make sense. People have issues with the narrative, with the pacing, with the cinematography You don’t have to take notes to critique a film. Yea maybe people come into the movies expecting to dislike them, which isn’t fair, but that is a case by case thing and you’re assuming a lot about people’s mentality towards film P.S. I understand your annoyance at what you see as unfair hate for the prequels but people are not gonna be receptive to you calling them dumbasses. So I guess who is your audience? Are you actually trying to change minds or just appeal to people who agree with you? P.P.S. So you know my overall opinions: I love The OT. I like episodes 1 and 7. 3 is fine. I appreciate what 8 was trying to do but it didn’t pan out. And 2 and 9 are dog water.

Haven't you noticed that people don't complain so much about politics in SW anymore? It is not true that the sequels made the prequels better, but they did put things in context. Now people understand the importance of world-building. In addition, tired voices are already beginning to emerge that in everything they make of SW, they only know how to take us to Tatooine or another random desert planet, instead to new planets and fantastic places like Lucas did. And considering the latest products that Disney has made, the lack of narrative and the lack of coherence in the story is worrying. I guess it's only a matter of time before people learn to appreciate the magic of the prequels.

I doubt prequel haters/fake fans will watch the movies again in order to understand them. Because apparently in their mind, they don’t copy the OT like they wanted it to. They aren’t that different from corporations. They don’t care what’s good for the story, the only care what the polls say. This is why we got TCW. And while yes Lucas did create it, and there are great moments that do fit within the movies, the overall series completely disconnects itself. I get that it’s a tv show and is meant to be it’s own, while still expanding on the war and it’s all based on the prequel films, but it could’ve been done better. This is why the 2003 clone wars fits perfectly with the prequels. It doesn’t disrespect Lucas’s vision. And if anyone says it does and that it contradicts the movies. They’re just idiots and only making lazy excuses because they love TCW so much. I’m not saying to hate on it, but to understand why it doesn’t fully work with the overall saga. I could’ve seen it working if one, Anakin and Obi-Wan didn’t encounter Dooku and/or Grievous, if Maul stayed dead, or if they wanted him back, kill him off towards the ending of the season or close to the last season. And with Ashoka, kill her off so that way it makes sense with the story. Because her being alive during Episode III makes 0 sense. Because she’s not even mentioned in the films. Her living pasted the OT really doesn’t make sense. This is all because of Dave Filoni’s fetish with her. He can’t let her go because if he does, then he’ll get hate for it by brain dead fans who only liked Ashoka because she’s a badass woman. I was fine with her at first, but grew annoyed with her in the end.

@@yaj_5002 Mostly the execution and direction/acting of the actors. The story is solid it was how it was executed that was poorly done. For example Anakin's turn to the dark side is unrealistic and felt extremely rushed ultimately making Anakin look like he was always a piece of shit to begin with, which undermines his redemption in ROTJ. Some of the dialogue is really bad and no the "context" doesn't make the "I don't like sand" line any better. And don't get me started on the romance between Anakin and Padme. It's extremely unrealistic and they have zero chemistry. Anakin comes off as awkward/mentally ill when talking to Padme which, if she was a real person would reject his ass immediately. On top of that he admits to murdering women and children that probably had nothing to do with his mother's kidnapping and she still goes ahead and marries him literally hours later. Either Padme has a fetish for mass murders or maybe, I don't know, maybe the writing is just shit in these movies. Please I would love to see someone actually justify the romance between Anakin and Padme. And there's plenty more examples I could present but I don't feel like writing an essay to be honest. And look I don't hate these movies, I love them. They were my childhood Star Wars movies and the reason I'm a fan to this day. But talking about them like they're more than they are comes off as extremely biased. And anyone who thinks they're as good as the OT is just wrong. It's not even a matter of opinion they're just wrong. And FYI I hate the sequels. So I'm not a sequel lover/prequel hater.

The big difference between the prequel and sequel trilogy is the third movie. In both cases the first two were middling and disjointed for different reasons (though I'd argue TFA + TLJ are better than TPM + AotC). Revenge of the sith was a good movie to end on, it set up the pieces for the OT well enough and had some kickass climactic battles. Rise of Skywalker was a hot mess of convenience, backtracking and lack of any real direction. So the prequel trilogy, while I would argue is still a bad fan fiction for the most part, ends strong and leaves you wanting more. The sequel trilogy (full of fan fic tropes itself) has a much.. MUCH worse last chapter and the whole trilogy suffers greatly for it.

Also I disagree with everything the OG artist says goes when working with a universe like star wars. Bob Kane and Bill Finger did not write the best batman stories. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote greats like Hound of the Baskerville, but he also wrote the speckled band. Lucas was a visionary world builder, but his best work (story-telling wise) was derivative of others. Maybe it's a generational thing, your star wars is your star wars man. But this "attachment" to any one trilogy is very unbecoming of a Jedi ;). For me the Prequels had some kick ass laser sword fights, and a decent origin story for lord Vader (made better by the EU stuff). Also seeing Ian Mcdiarmid ham it up is a treat in every generation. 10. The 'laziness' label thrown at the CGI in the prequels is not that they used it but that is was in service of nothing. Spectacle for the sake of spectacle. A million lightsabers isn't impressive if I don't care about the story. And if you want an example of proper balance of CG and practical look no further than Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. 9. Critiquing a film should not be based on watching the behind the scenes and bonus content. A movie should stand up on it's own as a movie. But, consider: no filmmaker or movie studio is going to include anything truly controversial or contradictory in the extra features. All that material is vetted and controlled. 8. The context is not being disregarded when people pull lines from the prequels. These are being used as examples of how a poorly written story has lead to some very stilted dialogue. Letting the whole scene play out to see its context is not going to do the prequels any favours. 7. Slamming the Clone Wars for pandered to original trilogy fans and re-writing canon is pretty rich coming from someone trying to defend the prequels, a trilogy of films so contradictory to the spirit and established story that the filmmakers had to create special editions to erase inconsistencies. Clone Wars, Bad Batch, novels, comics, etc. may well retcon or pointlessly shoehorn in characters and concepts that reenforce or refute any Star Wars thing you happen to like or dislike. I wouldn't know. I didn't watch or read any of that stuff. What we're talking about here is the movies and if they're any good. 6. The original trilogy is held to the same standard. We know the 'Tarzan swing' is hokey (it comes up two more times in Return of the Jedi. Once with Chewbacca even doing the Tarzan yell!) and the Ewoks, and going to Toschii station to pick up some power converters. Part of the appeal of the original trilogy is it's famous marriage of what we have seen (Flash Gordon serials, dark robed villains, death-defying rope swings over deep chasms) with things we hadn't (space ships as fighter planes, top notch special effects with a very basic hero story, a space bar filled with weird creatures). We liked the 'side villains' in the original trilogy because we didn't know anything about them. We see them by their actions in the moment and how the interact and obstruct the characters we do know. The prequels came along and decided they had to give us every stupid detail about where every stupid thing came from and the sequels made it even worse. We never wanted Anakin to be a badass "just add the helmet" Darth Vader. You're missing the point. We didn't want him at all. 5. If the prequels were supposed to be the beginning of the story then why didn't they make them first? If you are going to discount the sequels because they rely on recognition of the previous films then, by that reasoning, you can only ever watch Star Wars. No Empire, no Return of the Jedi, no prequels, no Solo, no Rogue One. This is why everything beyond the original trilogy is faulted, flawed, watered down, overexplained, undercooked and not interesting. They were all made so long after the fact and rather than setting a new story with new characters in a familiar world they just keep dragging the same tired old settings and people out for stories we never wanted. 4. Oh, you are not trying to justify midichlorians are you? I'll tell you why people don't like midichlorians. The ideas the filmmakers put out there in the original trilogy are beautiful, simple and above all--get this through your thick trivia spreadsheet of a skull--UNEXPLAINED. The entire attraction of the original trilogy (and particularly the first film) was seeing ourselves in the characters and their struggles. We all want to believe we're destined for greater things, that we have a larger purpose, that adventure awaits. No one, and I mean NO ONE wants to hear "you don't have the magic blood so you're not important" and the really don't want to hear it in their escapist fantasy adventure story. 3. George Lucas is not god. Not everything he did was perfect. Not everything anyone else did with Star Wars was garbage. I don't care about who owns what. What I care about is the media being good. And ratio of good to bad has been abysmal for a long time. 2. It's a movie, you insufferable twit. Boring DOES equal bad. This is supposed to be a rollicking space adventure. Make me care about the characters then set them through some action and emotional turmoil. Senators and diplomats sitting around talking can be engaging and tense and heartbreaking but I didn't see that in these movies. Crazy space battles with mind bending visuals could be gripping if I give a shit about the situations and the people involved but I didn't see that in these movies either. Failure on two fronts. 1. Again, you seem to think it's on the audience to decipher things that are not clear in the film. This isn't stupidity or willful ignorance or pointless hate. These films were poorly conceived and didn't know their audience. These are space adventure films with simple underpinnings and emotions not documentaries on fictional political and economic systems. No one wants to watch that. Now, I'll let you in on the real secret behind Star Wars prequel, sequel, legends, expanded universe and video game hate. And this includes the original trilogy. We cannot be who we were at the time we saw them. That's why we pick them apart and pore over pointless details and niggling little acknowledgements and disavowals. Because, at one point, some version of this meant something to us. And the version you love is the version that confirms who you were and what it revealed to you about yourself at the time. There is no right or wrong. It's all opinion and objectivity doesn't enter into it.

10. You give no examples. You're just like "spectacle for the sake of spectacle, blah blah blah" 9. You're missing the point. Given those like RedLetterMedia and Cosmonaut's reviews are very reflective off of false assumptions of what they think "probably" happened behind the scenes and given a lot of prequel haters try to be the "Be-All End-All" of the Prequels as movies, the least they could do is see if what they claim about George Lucas and the actors is accurate. 8. Yes it is. People can't pull their heads out of their asses and assess the context of whatever scene they think is bad. 7. You give no examples to the Prequels contradicting the Original Trilogy aside from the Special Editions, which were also made by George. Listen buddy, George has every right to update HIS movies. Also to note that the start of the Special Edition changes predate the Prequel Trilogy by 2 years. Also, saying that the films contradict the "spirit" of Star Wars is that same OT Fanboy talking point. These movies don't "feel" like the Original movies which they don't have to given the Prequels are telling a different story with a different tone. I have no clue what you're going on about. Also, you have obviously never seen the Prequel Haters who desperately try to use "TCW is what people really like" narrative. I've seen it countless times in comments sections and reddit. Also I'm going to make my TCW S2 review very soon, so I'm going into more detail about why I don't like that show very well. 6. Your defense for the side villains is so pathetically weak that I had to squint when I saw it just to make sure I read that correctly. "We don't know anything about them" As for Vader, whether you wanted to see his backstory is not a flaw with the movies, I hear this a lot of OT Fanboys "We didn't want the Prequels" even though absolutely everyone was fucking hyped for the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. As for Anakin/Darth Vader being a badass, I'm talking about it with both perspectives, with or without the Prequels. It's because you misunderstood the core character of Darth Vader that you complained about Anakin being some whiny kid and going ballistic on both the actors who played him. You thought he was a badass warrior at his core. 5. You have heard, but haven't listened. The Prequels' existence was justified because they were made integral to the story and the Sequels weren't. The Sequels are pointless extensions made with fan service as it's main selling point while the Prequels were made to be the introduction to the story, not just "3 movies of backstory" as so many people claim. Just because they weren't made first means nothing. They are still the start of the story and how the Complete Saga is meant to be watched. Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi on the other hand are justified sequels because they continue the story in a meaningful way. The Sequel Trilogy just reset the conflict to "Rebels VS. Empire" all over again, invalidating the original 6 movies. You are mistaking what I said about prioritizing Fan Service with Fan Service on it's own. 4. You obviously haven't heard of reality. We're born with certain advantages and disadvantages, and it's what we make of it that makes us great. You are ignoring key characters of Star Wars who didn't use the force, like Han Solo. Also Anakin was a character that came from nowhere. Just because he was the prophesized chosen one doesn't change that. You again, have a fundamental misunderstanding of the story (and reality) George created and your fantasy is nothing more than a delusional wet-dream. You also didn't listen to when I said Force Sensitivity was established in RETURN OF THE JEDI. You are saying the same OT Fanatical crap that J.J. Abrams expressed in interviews which showed he put his own personal experience with the movie over established continuity. 3. You weren't paying attention and missing the point. George Lucas is can make mistakes like any other filmmaker but he cannot be argued with when it comes to the story. Not how a story is presented or anything like that, just, the story, and so many people always pretend their version of Star Wars is the correct one. Nothing I say about the STORY is "my interpretation", it is based of what the original creator said. This applies to every single story and their original creator and it can only be criticized if the creator contradicts their own work (Unless they update it like George did with the Special Editions which he has every right to). Only the original creator decides what is and isn't their own creation. 2. You're not listening and missing the point. By your shallow standards, silent movies for example would be deemed bad automatically. And I also said Prequel Haters have the attention span of a goldfish, so it's not like anything that isn't screaming in your face like the Prequels would appeal to them. But that doesn't make them bad. You also don't give much reasoning. 1. "They didn't know their audience" is laughable. You saying that Star Wars is simple is the same idiocy from Cosmonaut Variety Hour all over again. It's not up to you to decide what Star Wars is or isn't. Only George Lucas can. Also your shallowness comes into play AGAIN because you act like politics are all the Prequels are, even though the political scenes go on for less than 10 minutes in all three movies combined. Now go away, I've had enough of you.
