About the Vader rampage, one thing that stuck me was that none of the poor sods had likely ever seen a Jedi or Sith in combat, and all of a sudden this inhumanly tall figure with god-like powers and a sword of red plasma emerges from the shadow and starts slaughtering them. @priest9235

EpicMRPancake exactly, best scene of the whole movie, they NEED to expand on him in his prime... It's what he was known for, his absolute power and raw skill in combat was un-comparable at the time and none of the movies except this one have managed to capture that, even if it's only for a minute in this one.

People who complain about character development in this movie don't complain about it in other war movies like saving private Ryan or black hawk down. People need to realize this is a WAR movie. In saving private Ryan. Do you know the snipers back story? Do you know why he is so religious? No. he is just a character in the squad Same goes for all the other characters. So we don't need to know all the back stories of all the characters. We just need to know that they are all people who have been hurt. And wronged. And we get that feeling in rogue one and their sacrifice was all the better for it. They all knew they were never getting out and that's what makes them heroes.

I get your point but most people are complaining because they're used to there being character development in star wars. In the saga films, the story serves the characters and in this film the characters serve the story.
@Belzebub1978
@Belzebub1978 7 жыл бұрын
Yeak. Thats the Point! The movie isnt about the Charakters. You dont need to set up the relation with here father. The movie is about getting the plans of the deathstar whatever it cost. Also the complaining about Kylo isnt as badass as vader. Thats because his young and uncontrolled. Anikin was the same when he was young!
@leenasanderson6739
@leenasanderson6739 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Payne "the characters serve the story' hmm can't think of any great character development that occurred in the prequels. Don't want any hate but seriously tell me about padmes character dev, obiwans, or any other character. Seriously even anakin who was central to the plot as in becoming vader, all i got was that he lived padme I still never understood the famous 'friendship' with obi wan as it was mostly them arguing about how to deal with things. So I am sorry but I don't agree that this movie is lacking in character development. They are there to help tell the story of stealing the plans for the rebels abd die after completing the mission. that's it. And i thought it was fantastic in telling/showing that tale.

Luke C more realism does not make a movie better what was vader going to do just ignore the bullets/lasers flying at him. Almost everyone I know of can agree it is a great scene. Only an idiot calls people idiots due to differing opinions. It's like saying "if Ronaldo is so good at scoring goals why doesn't he just go straight for the goal and score everything." it's because he would get tackled. Just because you are a great footballer doesn't mean you can't get tackled you have to dodge and skill the defenders. Just like vader has to block and deflect the bullets being shot at him from the 8-12 people shooting at him.

Vader's scene was brutal, horrifying and showed people the need for Luke Skywalker. He deflected multiple bolts at once He used telekenis to throw people around and or make them float in mid-air He choked people to death He froze and absorbed blasts and threw them back at the rebels (look again if you didn't see.) He deflected shots into the guy holding the data. Look closely, there are 3 people who hold the data at one point. He kills the first, cripples the second before killing him and only with a lucky toss does that data reach the rebels. Best scene in Star Wars.

This line made me cringe. Vader isn't witty, he doesn't drop double-entendres, he's not a sarcastic being. He's an evil Sith Lord, plain and simple. This kind of dissonance in dialogue took me out of the movie, but given how weak the characters were and how poorly this was written, I'm not surprised. This sort of schlock is what SW is now about I suppose and I hate it.
@tigerstoneman5727

Slider6294 I wouldn't say Vader isn't witty, also I seem to recall a line from A New Hope "I find your lack of faith.. disturbing" being quite sarcastic. In both instances the Imperial officer he was speaking to was annoying Vader, so he force choked them and said something to shut them up. So this new line doesn't seem out of character to me at all. That's my opinion anyway.

RPD1175 Then I tell you why those Hammerheads actually really come from the Rebels show. In one of the Garbage Episodes those Rebels stole the Hammerheads from an Empire occupied Planet. 3 of them. Since then those 3 Hammerheads were constantly part of their Fleet. And giving the fact that the Main Rebels ship, the Ghost, apperead in the Movie the Hammerhead is truly from rebels. And not from the KotOR games. Another note is that KotOR is 4000 years old. The Hammerhead in Rouge One and Rebels are modified newly build Hammerheads probably used by other Organisations.

Damn right, Rogue One is everything that I hoped for. I thought I was going to be disappointed by some forced happy ending bullshit cuz it's a Disney movie. But nope, it turned out I was completely wrong. Judging the gritty tone of this movie, I am more optimistic about Episode VIII now.

The reason why Jyn changed her attitude toward the rebellion in the film so quickly was because of the truth she discovered in the hologram, where her father firmly believed in the cause to destroy the death star. After his death this would have spurred her on to complete her fathers wish and also by the fact that no-one initially believed her father intentionally sabotaged the death star. Cant believe you guys overlooked that.

The Clone Wars isn't as popular because there are no stakes. Both sides are literally expendable troops. And when ships get destroyed it doesn't matter because they seem to have a never ending supply of them. The only characters you care about are the Jedi because they are actual people.

Honestly making the characters forgettable was the whole point imo. In the original trilogy they are never referenced. You just know that the plans for the Death Star were stolen and that was it. Their sacrifice is never acknowledged because the Rebels are so driven to win. No matter the cost. For those who died it's a small foot note in the bigger scheme of things. It's a story that will never be told. Giving them a back story and fleshing them out would've only made things more complex for the original trilogy of who they were. In the end, they were just soldiers who died for the cause....which makes it that much more painful.

Well, we probably will get both. When you pay four BILLION dollars for a franchise, you will make movies about R2-D2's chef. Hopefully, after Rogue One, they will do more films targeted towards an older audience, who were kids in 1977, and make everything more heavy handed. With that though, we need more Darth Vader showing him to be an evil bad-ass Jedi who would poison a planet's food and water supply just to make them do what he wants. Evil......Bad-Ass......Vader. I just get back from Kevin Smith review. He said pretty interesting thing. Basically, he said, you can't blame not in much in-depth characterization as Rogue One is category a War Movie. In War Movie, it's not obligatory to have well built characterization. However, you are oblige to make a well battle scene. So this movie did score 10/10.
@Cubemusic
@Cubemusic 7 жыл бұрын
Ben DeGorro I understand Kevins point, but I do not agree. I think that storytelling and characterization must always come before special effects, camera angels and well shot war scenes. There was nothing wrong with the actors in thus movie, but the characters where kind of flat to me. The characters and how the actors portraited them reminded me more of how the characters in the prequels where portraited: In One Dimension. The story was great, the war scenes where fantastic and the sound design was superb! But the characters where flat and one dimensional and they lacked any depht and special characters traits. I wanted more than just actors delivering their dialogues.
@bendegorro754
@bendegorro754 7 жыл бұрын
Cyn Music - True, if I may compare to 'Saving Private Ryan', Tom Hanks did succeed bring his character to be well accepted, compare to Jyn Erso-Felicity Jones. But for the rest of the company, they don't need depth character introduce. But again, Felicity vs Hank is like heaven & earth, of their experience, of their real age and the base character they're played on. So I don't think the stiff expression but impulsive Jyn Erso isn't fault, as young-adult is like that. Young adult tend to chasing one desire and don't care the whole picture. Why people love Chirrut Imwe character are because he's a well behave adult and experienced, plus Donny Yen also well established drama and stunt actor.
@Cubemusic
@Cubemusic 7 жыл бұрын
Ben DeGorro Good point of view. And Saving Private Ryan is actually one of the movies (in my own little head) that I compare character depht with. However, Rouge One is not attempting to be Saving Private Ryan. I know that. It's not attempting to be Full Metal Jacket or any other acclaimed war movie. I'm barley wishing there was more to the characters than skintone and gender. I think what I'm trying to say is that I think they lack personality. and color. Just like the prequel characters. They have a story arc, yes. But the way they deliver them dialogues and the way they where directed gives me a feeling of plastic action heroes, kind of :) Although I really enjoyed the movie. Well, the first 30 minutes or so was a bit bland and stale, but it took of real quick and just kept escalating until climax. And the climax was yummy.
@bendegorro754
@bendegorro754 7 жыл бұрын
Cyn Music - Because the first 30 minutes, it was the story of chasing the tail of "Infamous Extremist yet Behave like a child madman". If Bodhi Rook got assigned by Galen Erso to deliver the massage directly to the Rebel in Yavin 4, no one gonna miss Saw Gerrera. :D

There were ways around that. Jyn had no stake in the Rebel Alliance, so she could've just disappeared or went into hiding. It could've been one of those, "I do this for you, you can't come looking for me." Donny Yen's character's Force atheist buddy could've also survived & in the end experience something that made him believe in the Force or believe Chirrut transcended after his death (perhaps show him as a Force ghost). Not saying killing them all off wasn't what the story needed. I liked it. All I'm saying is there are ways around that. They're not exactly painted into a corner.

not even that. rebels are in a big war she just may not had been part of the group that was helping build a new rebel base in hoth. she may had been elsewhere doing something else. the only time all hands were on deck for the alliance was in return of the jedi but there were so many pilots and trooper she could had been anyone of those.. instead they took another route and just decided why bother including her in the original films or explaining what she was doing on those. SHe and her team is dead and that is that

Ikr, I never expected to see a sinister scene like that in this move despite it's a darker movie in general. It was awesome to see Vader fighting but in the same time I think it's the most scary Vader moment yet (definitely!). I also kinda felt really sorry for the rebels because of the despairing screaming and their slaughtering by Vader, just like cattle... I mean damn if you think about it, is it possibly the scariest scene in a Star Wars movie yet?.

I found there was a lot of depth to that scene. I've thought about it for a while and vader didn't really go that brutal during the original trilogy, it seems to suggest he didn't start feeling conflicted until after he kills old ben. After a new hope, vader seemed to show more restraint. Didn't really think about it that way until after seeing this film

Why is it so hard to believe Jyn's change of heart when it came to the rebellion? At first when she was watching the hologram of him, it wasn't at that point that she just suddenly made the change. At that point she found out what her Father had been through and what he sacrificed his freedom to do. Then she finds out where he is so they go to Eadu to "rescue" him but the base is attacked by Rebel fighters and Galen is killed. Just before dying he tells her that the Death Star has to be destroyed and at this point of the movie, she's seen what the Death Star can do, as it destroyed the entire city of Jedha in one blast. It's not until after Galen dies that she decides she will do whatever it takes to get the plans to destroy the Death Star because she doesn't want her fathers entire lifes attempt to create this vulnerabilty and his ultimate death to be in vain. She has also seen the destruction that this single space station can cause when not even at full potential and realizes that there won't be anywhere safe if this weapon continues to exist and the Empire will then have complete control over the entire galaxy. I don't see why people have SO MUCH difficulty comprehending the storytelling that Rogue One tells. There are still plot points or scenes that are weak in the film, but this aspect of the movie isn't one of them. Overall it was a great movie.

Killing Galen was most likely the smartest thing the rebels could do with their info. As far as they know he was the imperial scientist who built and designed the super laser. Capturing him, while definitely the ideal outcome, requires too many resources and too much time, something the Rebels didn't have at the moment. Might as well kill and get rid of threat of new super weapons.

***** There wasn't enough screen time - the movie was only 2 hours long (the story needed to keep going to keep the pace from getting too slow). If you want character development, read Star Wars: Catalyst. It gives fleshes out all of the characters background and motives.

***** As a Star Wars fan, reading the novel makes the movie 100x better. But just as a casual guy watching a movie - i hope you realize that if you wanted to get a fully fleshed out characterization, the movie wouldve dragged on to 3 hours long. As a movie on its own, it's a good movie. I do understand, the characterization was under cooked because they needed to keep the pace going, and making the movie 3 hours long wouldve been a problem. It's supposed to be a fast paced war-action movie.

I love you Joe but one thing that is very annoying about you and i have seen it in several videos is that you always think your opinion is right. You keep trying to correct your friends and even when they "give" proof that they are right or justify their opinions with some "facts" you just move on and ignore it instead of going "ok, i was wrong." If it´s annoying to me it must be very annoying to them as well, that´s why he felt like mentioning again that families do live in Star Destroyers. Again i am a huge fan but it becomes annoying to see you act like you know everything and are always right and when you aren´t, you don´t even adress it or just move on. It´s kind of a double standard that you feel the need to correct people and don´t even correct yourself or let people do it. I know when you are the big man among your friends and it´s your channel it´s hard to admit you are wrong but c´mon man, you are better than that.

I know some people like that and it´s kind of a childish behaviour. But hey he is a grown man so he should know that himself. For me as the viewer and someone who has been noticing it throughout alot of videos it´s annoying. It´s like he is used to being the big shot among friends and doesn´t have much respect for their opinions( which alot of times are correct but he judges it right away).

News flash Joe, just because jar jar Abrams said Force Awakens was intentionally a remake of A New Hope doesn't mean it's not shit. There's no excuse for not writing a fresh and new story with good characters and less fan service bullshit. Kylo Ren is not an intimidating villain and saying it's "not his thing" doesn't make him a better character. He's a shit villain who was beaten by a girl who just learned what the Force was a few hours ago.

RedLightning007 a retro thing was what fans wanted from star wars at that time of the force awakens, considering how it had been so long since they had that classic Star Wars feeling, Lucasfilm gave people what they wanted and they did it with great execution and characters, and yet people complained about it anyway. besides, while the new stuff was not dominant in the movie, it was established for future movies. Starting from the familiar and then going towards the new is a good idea for Lucasfilm, and J.J to have, shitting on his efforts, (and calling him Jar Jar, couse yeah box office and critical reception totally show that he fucked up) seems more like needless hate more than anything.
@flextits4883
@flextits4883 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel Ortiz people like you who are defending the movie are the reason we're going to keep getting remakes and rehashes. If you become accepting of unoriginality, it's going to become the norm. Again, there is absolutely no excuse for why they couldn't write an entirely new and original story. Yes fans wanted it to feel like the old Star Wars but not a fucking remake of everything we've seen before!!! You can make it feel like the originals without completely ripping it off! Make a different story but keep everything we love about Star Wars. The charming and well written characters, great humor, practical effects(which they did very well), the great villains, unique creatures, and epic battles. The Force Awakens had most of the ingredients but they fucked it up by retelling the same story we've already experienced. The characters are inconsistent and their motivations are unclear. Rey is an uninteresting character because she's perfect at everything. She doesn't fail at anything whatsoever. Hopefully episode 8 can be a little more original and unpredictable.
@ort94041
@ort94041 7 жыл бұрын
well ain't that overly dramatic. Sorry for liking something and putting more enphasis on it's many strenghts rather than it's few faults .i completly disagree with you on the characters, they showed what they had to show for that particular movie, considering they have two more to be developed, i mean come on, if you looked at a new hope by itself with no sequels whatsoever the characters would also seem underdeveloped, critics at the time actually complained about that. besides, you really think Disney is that dumb? they did something familiar for TFA because it was fitting at the time, while they did something risky with roque one couse it's fitting now. For episode 8 they know that they have to take the new stuff they teased on 7 and expand on it, there is no other route apart from that. As for 7, mimiking a new hope is only a problem if you want it to be, don't believe me, ask the people that watched the old movies for the first time because TFA inspired them to do so, TFA was their first time watching a giant spherical super weapon get blown up and they loved it. you get angry about it couse you have seen it before, but the creators of the movie were thinking about those not familiar with star wars too...

Just a quick thing about Stormtrooper armor: it dissipates the energy from blaster bolts (at least in the Legends canon), but the force still causes the trooper wearing the armor to get knocked out, so while they go down easily, they survive and can get back up later. ;) Now, I'm not sure if that trooper Joe said got shot several times would be making feeling too good later, or if he'd be feeling at all later, but that's why the bolts didn't pierce the trooper's armor.

I like you Joe but that was a really dumb thing to say.

Force awakens imo wasn't all that great to me. I feel like Fin could have been anybody and just comes off as a joke. Kylo Ren started off strong then he turned into a horrible lame character losing to a someone who had no force training at all. Rey is arguably the best character in the film but she does so much of everything it comes off over powered or ridiculous that it felt like plot armor from a damn anime. All the other characters were just there never giving me a care. The movie borrowed from episode 4 so much than it felt pointless and incredibly unoriginal to where I felt like I knew what was going to happen every step of the way.

Nemo_K What I think a lot of people don't get is that the people making this film were hamstrung by the fact that the last time Star Wars did something new with its story, people didn't like it. So they HAD to pretty much hit all the cliches to get people back into it. But at the same time, we don't know anything about this new timeline or the current state of the universe so it leaves a lot of plot holes that need to be filled. I'm gonna reserve judgements until Episode 8 comes out, but I would like to see something more than just Empire Strikes Back 2.0

They are wrong to criticize Disney for that, they needed to show they would make a Star Wars movie, not a sci-fi movie with a Star Wars title. They had to make something like the original trilogy, and TFA did that, and was a great movie in it's own right. And once they did prove they could do it and gained the faith of the fans, they could make something new, like Rogue One.

Tarkin had an actor so they can base the CGI off of him, Leia's didn't so she was harder to do making her look faker but it was still good work for CGI

I still think Tarkin's CGI was better than Leia's, but still, they had balls to even go with CGI in the first place, so a point for that.

The stormtrooper armor is made to take the force of the blast and send it through the entire body, that's why they kinda fall back. They generally don't die but will usually fall unconscious or be paralyzed for a few minutes

29:55 they go down in one shot because storm trooper armor is meant to disperse the impact over the suit, witch can save storm troopers lives and injures but the downside is they usually get knocked out from the shot. in other words storm trooper armor is meant to allow troopers to live to fight another day with as few injures as possible at the cost of being knocked out by the impact instead of trying to stop the bolt outright with a chance of being able to continue fighting like a bulletproof vest like the clone troopers armor was.

This movie was LIGHT YEARS better than TFA. I can't even believe you are trying to compare the two. It's like comparing a rock to a diamond.

PCWarMachine one thing i didnt like in TFA was starkiller base. it felt useless to me but thats about it i dont like how people say that it being a revamp of a new Hope is a bad thing about it. watch the JJ commentary for TFA he explains it

I will agree with you that the next director gain regain much of this lost potential with episode 8. Let's hope he actually gets the time and inclination to iron out a really good script. Rogue One was an excellent script and I think as time goes on you are going to see more and more people fully understanding how much of an achievement this film really was. I also felt starkiller base was such a writers contrivance in TFA. They needed a 'menace' so they just though... how about another deathstar? Yeah but we can't call it a deathstar or have it work the same way. For me a simple reason TFA failed at storytelling while Rouge One succeeds is this: - Han dies. I feel angry. But I don't feel anger at Kylo Ren. I feel anger at the movies creators. Fail! - Practically everyone dies in Rouge One. I am sad, but I accept that it was needed for the story to be fulfilled. Success!

I thought he said "her" meaning Leia
@me2olive
@me2olive 7 жыл бұрын
You're both wrong, he was referring to a female Jedi (Leia is not a Jedi, and didn't serve him in the Clone Wars as the dialogue says) but it was an intentional tease. I'm guessing the payoff to that will be in the next movie.

me2olive Hmm yeah then maybe they should have been more clear in the movie about who Bail was talking about. I see your point! But to me I thought he was saying that since the war broke out that he needed that power friend in hiding Obi-wan or maybe even Yoda to come back and help him, and that the girl he trusted was Leia and he trusted her to deliver the message to Obi-wan and keep it secret, since she also had the plans on her. Idk that's just what I got out of it. Maybe it's because I'm a huge Kenobi fan

Yeah, he definitely meant Obi-wan ... That was another neat little end this movie tied up -- it explained why Leia took the Death Star plans to a backwater shithole like Tatooine.

29:15 That was an easter egg in rougue one. Back in "A New Hope" when obi wan sneaks into the deathstar and is trying to deactivate the tractor beam...you overhear 2 stormtroopers saying "Have you heard about those new VT-16 units?" Since A New Hope takes place after Rogue One...that's why the VT-15 is obsolete
