Star Wars was the first toy line I supported as a little tyke. In the late 70's C-3P0 and R2-D2 were the first two figures I collected. Mom and Dad took to me the store after we had seen the movie in cinema. I recall that I wanted Luke, Han or Vader but those two were all they had in stock at the time. It's a precious memory and I loved them! Over the years I acquired everyone else until the final coin ones - I only managed a couple of those.

I’ll never understand why some so-called hardcore vintage collectors do not like restorations. These toys would otherwise be sad, unsightly relics of their former glory. Restoring them gives them new life!

Great to see you feeling better. This is super useful content, I have childhood R2 and R4 that could use work and I'm sure I'm not alone. Almost every kid I knew had a beat up astromech in the toy box.
@jasonknight85815 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Thanks Michael! I myself have a childhood R2D2 in poor shape, and once again, you've inspired me to try and restore it. I already ordered the replacement stickers online, but I'm going to try the chrome pens, I've had pretty good luck with them. I am stumped on what to do with the blue panels and the small red accent on his dome.
@CaptainArrrgh5 жыл бұрын
I think if the chrome is shiny enough, a lighter color going over would work for the blue and red, like a marker even.

If you want to ensure that it's as smooth as glass, scrub it all over with some cardboard (even the white side of a matchbook cover )and then again with plain printer or notebook paper. I've been a model kit builder for decades and have found that this method is a cheap, effective and safe way to get a nice polish on plastic, vinyl, etc. without causing a bit of damage.

I've searched for years in yard sales and junk stores but have yet to find any beater figures. I haven't even see any SW figures, period, aside from flea markets where the sellers think any figure is worth double its actual value. I prefer ones I can restore myself over minty ones, which doesn't matter because I can't find either lol.
@rictusmetallicus5 жыл бұрын
I still own my childhood R2D2. I thoroughly cleaned it and put on a new sticker. I cleaned the head but left it in the condition it is (way better than this one and no broken leg). My R2 is part of my history and remetalizing it would erase part of that history, tht's what i'm thinking. It now looks played with but good and that's the way i want it.

Would you ever do a restoration at a convention panel? That would be amazing. Kinda sorta like a master craftsmen with a live audience home improvement show.
@TheMattwolf5 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. I wonder how that would work logistically? The presentation would be easy enough with an overhead screen, but if something had to soak overnight, we'd have a problem. Quite a challenge!
@ChrisConnolly-Mr.C-Dives-In5 жыл бұрын
TheMattwolf Thanks for the reply. Maybe like a cooking show, have multiples in different stages, or maybe have a variety of different items, start with one item, and while it gets soaked/ treated show the work on the second item. “Overnight” I don’t have an answer for, unless there’s a day one and day two demos at a con.
@TheMattwolf5 жыл бұрын
@@timothyward8695 It's a colloquialism. I have no restoration prowess nor association with RetroBlasting beyond loyal fandom. I was musing on the presentation difficulties of a restoration done at a panel.
@RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS5 жыл бұрын
I had no idea Meccano and Kenner had any relationship! Beautiful restoration, by the way. Somewhat related, but I acquired a Mainline Models vintage (early 80s I think) model train, which had a box labeled for Palitoy, which as I understand, distributed the Kenner figures as well. Did Kenner own Mainline Models? Or were both owned by Palitoy?

I’m being 110% honest.. THIS.. Is more “fun” and educational than Star Wars Celebration!!! I refused to go last year when it was down the road in Orlando.. Whyyy.. because Star Wars is now a Millennial.. Gluten Free. kelp eating Corporate sponsored party.. US GenXers who grew up in 77-85... I struggle with identifying with all this.. The Last Jedi .. broke my heart.. my wife even felt terrible for me .. just the look on my face... That Fantasy finally ended.... Sooo when Retroblasting features something from OUR age of StarWars... THAT is worthy and something to get excited ... and we all learn what to do...
