_SG1_ [and _Atlantis_ ] had close ties to the DoD over the years because they always portrayed the USAF with respect, dignity, honor and accuracy, and didn't let Hollywood-style antics get in the way... erm, for the most part and as far as a sci-fi show would let them. It was because of this relationship that the real Chief of Staff General Ryan (and a few other real USAF personnel) was invited in for a cameo as a sign of thanks from the show.

Yup. I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. As is always the case most actors don't want to be locked in to one character, no matter how good that character. Alan Alda never really got a significant role after MASH. Most stars of shows like that end up doing off Broadway or indie films.

I always find it fun when a non professional actor steps into a role to do a cameo of themselves in a TV show or movie. Admittedly the roles are small, not particularly complex, and it's not like they need to express complicated emotions or lines, but it is fun to see an average non-pro person from professional life managing to act alongside professional actors and not standing out particularly. I think a lot of folks, if they weren't aware who Ryan was, might have thought he was just a fictional general in the USAF and this was an actor hired to play the role.
