How and when you should start the downswing is something a lot of students of the game struggle with. In this video, I will show you 2 key moves that all world class swingers of the club do to start the downswing.

Finally a KZfaq golf coach called out the step drill. I've never really understood it and was getting annoyed that it was constantly being put forward as a drill to assist with transition. Good work!

Thank goodness someone sees the light!!!! You my friend, are the game ball winner for the week. I’m going to start keeping track of these game balls and the people with the most will get some sort of prize. Maybe a golf trip out here to Florida and we will all go play streamsong or something. I’ll have to think about this further. Anyway, thank you for watching and thank you for understanding there is a more relatable approach to moving to the lead side.

I agree! The step drill only messed up my swing. This video makes a lot more sense to me. The re-centering that many coaches teach on KZfaq seems like teaching a reverse pivot to me.

Hi Chris; thanks for including the point about body injury from the swing that's rarely mentioned. How many pros are having back issues because of improperly using the body? I guess Woods is the perfect example. I saw a video a while back for this drill that included placing a lightweight taller object like a plastic water bottle against the inside of the trail ankle which will fall forward if the drill is done properly. This works well for me to ensure I'm doing it as demonstrated. I always rotated my foot instead of rolling it inward & it allowed me to rotate my hips to early & too far. This tip made a big difference in my swing.

Way too many have to sit on the bench from back related injuries. You can see which ones will happen sooner than others. We called Will Z and Morikawa 3 years ago. I have some other ones that stand out BUT I don’t really like to wish or think negatively on anyone and I certainly don’t want to see any of the guys and gals out there get hurt. There are safer ways to build golf swings, that’s for sure. Thanks for the very important comments from your side and some info that other students can learn from. I like the bottle idea.

Good advice. Just wondering. Should I be inhaling or exhaling in the backswing?

Excellent video! I have to admit I drank the re-centering kool-aide and became an expert on the closed hip slide. And rarely hit a solid shot. This video is your best yet and "re-centers" my head on squaring the hips properly so I can post up and release the club. Despite the progress in golf instruction there is still some channel conflict on important swing principals. Thanks for this CT.

Golf instruction is “trying” to get better. We just need to find out how to use the data we can collect and safely apply it back to positive changes in the golf swing. Glad this one helped you C!

Chris, great video. What's your thoughts on actually pausing at the top of the backswing before starting the downswing sequence? Some of my best rounds incorporated this pause which makes it feel like the club is settling into position and that I'm fully turned. Otherwise, it tends to feel jerky. BTW, keep up the great work.

Hi Roy, it’s pretty common for players to think they come to a full pause at the top, when in face they start the downswing with no pause at all. What’s actually happening is the feel of your “pause” is actually you being much more patient with your smaller muscles like your hands and arms and allowing you to source your speed from the ground up. I do like this approach for players that fight with sequence issues in the downswing especially when they get under the gun. Just remember, your internal beat in which you move, is yours. We are all different in this regard. Hope that helps and thank you for the kind words.

What clicked for me last month was to use the ground in transition, i would lose connection with the ground and lose my ability to twist. Hips thrust forward now i can twist and stay down through the shot.

On point and simple. Using your reps before striking a ball causes me to do these movements in fairly slow motion, and it's never ceased to amaze me how much better striking the ball squarely is achieved swinging slower. Thanks for another valuable vid on how to get better without a bunch of mumbo jumbo technical verbiage, and easy to replicate movements that result in a good ball strike. I would ask if you could do something focusing on alignment through the bag, driver down to wedges. That seems to be a major flaw with amateurs, not lined up properly at address. I would like to hear your input on that.

Great video! My question is do you apply force at the start of your backswing or do you simply let the club fall to parallel and then accelerate through? Thanks!

Thank you so much for watching and the kind words. You can add some arm activation if it doesn't disrupt your downswing sequence. Just take it in small strides.

You’re not mentioning anything about the upper body movement especially the lead shoulder? This needs to be pulled so you’re upper body is at a 45 degree angle correct?
@MyGolfDNA
@MyGolfDNA Жыл бұрын
That is correct. This drill is designed to not have to think about the sequence of the shoulders on the way down. Get the shoulder back to target, start the legs and go.
