Starting a Generator in Cold Weather

A few tips on ensuring your gasoline generator will run in cold weather. The most essential tip is using starting fluid, however your mileage may vary if your oil is too heavy when cold. If you have any others add it to the comments below!

One other thing that I found that helps is use winter blend fuel. I use my generator year around and found it hard to start in the winter, then I realized I still had summer blend in the tank. So now every fall I drain the fuel and add fresh winter blend.

Thank you for this! I had a hard time starting my generator a few weeks ago (granted, it was 17 below at 1AM..and that's not counting wind chill...ugh!). Now I know to use starter fluid.

I live in Ohio I have a predator 8750 that I bought in 2014 starts every time first pull no matter what the temperature is and I use 5W-30 full synthetic all year long

Thanks. I always keep my gasoline stored outside AWAY from the house. Personal preference...I also use STABIL for thte fuel in my primary standby 5KW Generac ( circa 1985)

i got my briggs and Stratton and it starts without problem 3 pulls at most....-20-30 ferenheit

I put the smallest Kat block Heater on my generator with a thermo plug that kicks on at 35F.

If I replace the 10W-30 oil in my generator with 0W-30 as you suggest, will it be OK to operate during warm weather, say 80F?

yes it will because the hot number 30 is the same or you can go with a 0w40 just to get a little more protection if you are running it for a long time

Champion gen has no spark when cold. Was hoping to find a trick for that.

Have you tried an NGK spark plug? I've found those to be the most reliable and consistant.

@@OnTheWorkbench not sure why it had no spark but now it does although quite weak in low temps. Was going to try ngk asap.

propane or gasoline the issues are similar, still need regular oil changes, clean air filters. The only real issue can be if you try to use a small green propane cylinder (or blue torch cylinder) they can drop in temperatures and become very cold, possibly requiring you to wear gloves to handle them. The larger the tank, the less risk of this occuring.
