It's time for the battle of the forward-firing battleships: Richelieu and Nelson. Which one of these will win the battle of the bow-in battleships?
Disclaimer: the ships will not be entirely historically accurate. This is a game, not a simulator. I have tried building the ships as best I can within the confines of Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts.

Why won't you play War Thunder?
▪️ I raged at getting sniped by tanks that I could never see. Also nonsense like turning bushes off that helps you perform better. That seems like a terrible design to me. War Thunder also had drama several years ago about the CEO calling the fanbase to help strike down channels or using copyright strikes to eliminate channels entirely. That is such abuse of power and dictatorial nonsense that I refuse to play a game created by such a company.

@@latoyagooden8371 I did project 23 VS the planned south Dakota class that was cancelled in the 1920s. It had 12 16 inch main battery but was comparatively slower and had less tech.

The problem with this type of ships is that when the AI chickened out it always "give us the ass" making this type of turret arrangement useless. The ship AI itself doesn't know how the ship is designed.

A pair of What-if's that I would like to see. Bismarck v Richelieu The British planned N-3/G-3 pattern vessels versus the Yamato. The N-3 being the Battleship-counter part to the Battlecruiser G-3 as was pre-WW1 British Admirality thinking.

Giving double fore belt to Richelieu is just madness. Its guns are all on the front, it's built for frontal engagements. That's an insane buff. Haven't seen how it goes, but clearly this is a way too large departure from the reality. Wasn't there a spot to move the funnel forward? You removed one funnel but left the one at the back.

Armour quality does seem a little silly, kind of wish instead of essentially multiplying armour thickness it was more about the chance to prevent a penetration and chance to not be damaged when bouncing shells. So the lower quality armour will break from constant small shell impacts while high quality armour will last much longer against them and have chances to prevent penetrations that would have happened. But thats a lot more stuff to code and such >

One thing to note is that Richelieu had more armor than Iowa... (In most places...) The Iowa had better systems (until Richelieu got her upgrade) (Also, part two shows why controlling one of the ships is not a good idea... The AI vs AI is more balanced)

Nelson did have Radar, the 276 was fitted in 1940 during time spent in repair, and that was upgraded to a 276M in 1941. Its mentioned in Norman Friedman's British Battleships 1906 - 1946, probably one of the most in depth examinations of British Battleships of that era ever printed.

The devs still need to fix the formulas relating to torp avoidence as ships have magical turns still ... but still such an incredible game and the talent and work to produce this has amazing.

The devs really need to think about including hulls/superstructures that allow players to duplicate historically built ships. It's sad that they have so many "might have been" hulls/superstructures while it's extremely difficult to construct ships using real designs. A match-up against King George V (commissioned in 1940, like Richelieu) would have been a more even match than against Nelson (commissioned in 1927). Also, Richelieu didn't get her radar until her 1943 refit at the New York Naval Shipyard; as designed she wasn't supposed to have one (and even when radar was installed it wasn't a fire control radar but a short-range SA-2 search radar designed for use aboard small craft like PT Boats, completely unsuited to directing gunfire).

Speaking of super cruisers: Alaska versus a modernised Scharnhorst 1944. Basically give Scharnhorst a modern steering gear (as she received in 1942), an updated FuMo 24 search radar, modern range finder equipment and such. How would she fare against a faster firing and heavier salvo, but lesser armored US super cruiser. And perhaps do the same with an salvaged Gneisenau 1944 again, but instead of the old 9x 28cm SK/C34 main guns give her the intended 6x 38cm SK/C34 guns.

The Nelson's have long been my favorite BBs. Their oddness attracts me. And, while it's hard to believe, they were the RN's most effective BBs in WWII.

Bismark should be fairly obvious Heres what I could find on Sovetsky Soyuz Displacement: 59-60,000 tons standard load; 65,000 full Propulsion: Single geared steam turbines Fuel: She ran on oil, so whatever you want Boilers: 6, 3 to each funnel Range: 14,000 km, tho doesnt matter too much Armament: 3 triple 16in in an ABX format 6 dual 6in 6 dual 4in Loaders: Her main guns fired about 2-2.6 shots per minute, so probably about 25 second reload time Turret Traverse: Electrically powered Rangefinding: Stereoscopic V Armor: 16.7 main belt 8.7 fore belt 7.1 aft belt 6.1 main deck 2.6 deck extended 19.5 turret face 9.1 turret top 16.7 conning tower Barbettes: 16.7in thick, so probably barb 2-3 Speed: 28 knots Torp belt: based on what I could find, she had a fairly extensive torp belt, so probably 3-4, but since shes not facing any, it shouldn't matter too much Citadel: She actually used an armored citadel scheme rather than a turtleback scheme Radar: She didn't carry radar, as the soviets hadn't put any effort into developing it until later in the war. Hope thats enough, its all I could find without using wikipedia

A little bit of info for Nelson and radar. "On December 4, while entering Loch Ewe, Nelson struck a magnetic mine that had been laid by U-31. Causing extensive damage and flooding, the explosion forced the ship to be taken to the yard for repairs. Nelson was not available for service until August 1940. While in the yard, Nelson received several upgrades including the addition of a Type 284 radar. After supporting Operation Claymore in Norway on March 2, 1941, the ship began protecting convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic. " ( www.thoughtco.com/battleship-hms-nelson-2361541 )

@@Stealth17Gaming A lot of the towers seemed to be placeholders early on, but they havent really been changed apart from the russian ones. They also screwed up the american ones and they don't connect anymore. Maybe they'll fix it once they're done with the campaign? who knows

Looks like the richelieu has the same problem some of the british ships had at jutland. So accurate that when your targeting is off by a bit, you miss completely.

She should have light shells for the Nelson, that was the big experiment with her guns, lighter, high velocity shells. Also, yes, she should have Radar, the type 276 to be exact, refitted to her in 1940 after she ran into a mine and had to go in for repairs and then modernised again in 1941 to the 276M.

Well if historical Nelson and Rodney never got a refit with really good late war fire control wheras a post war Richlieu is going to have really good fire control. If you ignore historicity and give them similar fire control Nelson has more armour and bigger guns. So basically should be a curb stomp one way or the other.

Seems extra ammo or less bulkheads would be needed as they run out of ammo before doing anything significant at normal fighting ranges.

come on Nelson! us brits can show em how to do it lol. i agree with you though stealth, Richelieu is a nice looking ship and i love the name. would be good if the game allowed a more planned attack starting position, in this case both bow in or head on as some might say. or even better would be a function where you can set an AI ship to attack/defend/sail in a certain way eg. head on attack or broadside attack. this way you could put the 2 against each other and open up so many possibilities without compromising setup... just my opinion. love these vids regardless

Both of them is good at attacking and rushing but really suck when they are fought back and hard to retreat since their main gun is at in the front.

Doesn't the fore belt and aft belt say it is the 'extention' of the belt, meaning the portion of the ship ahead and behind the main belt. That would mean it isn't the frontal or aft citadel protection (the transverse protection), but rather the protection of the section of the hull that, under the all-or-nothing scheme should be entirely unprotected, or at best splinter protected. Now, I don't have the game so I have only been able to glimpse the text a few times, so I could very well be wrong.

I just went and did this battle with desings as close to spec as i could get, with secondaries, (written at 1:56 in so i dont know how stealth did yet, also how do i save and send designs, or is that not a thing yet?) Anyways after 3 battles Nelson was completely nuked each time from 20km, 15km, and 5km. And yes i even incorporated the appropriate ranges and was able to get each ship within 5-10t under their actual weight. Just took a little messing with armor values within a reasonable expectation of what the true armor would be irl for actual balancing based on the designs of the ship. Too bad Richelieu never saw open water combat against the Kreigsmarine, it would've probably done some amazing things in the Pacific too

Must be because of the distance of the camera from the ship. There's actually a short delay in the explosion and the sound when firing cannons in real life, depending on your distance and such.

If I am to say it, the problems with the generic hulls and the superstructure is a big issue with the game. The main advertisement of the game is the customisation of the ships, especailly the modular hulls which I sold the game for me. I fully understand why the modular hulls aren't in the game, but the really generic superstructure and hulls really annoy me in this game. If you want to make good ships, they all end up looking the same after a while, which bugs me massively.
