They had some of the best musicians. They were perfectionists. Deacon Blues and Cousin Dupree come to mind and AJA was a masterpiece.. They never could put them in a music category.

You should try Do it Again by Steely Dan that is one great song but they had done a lot of good music, Peg, My old School, Reelin in the years are all great songs by Steely Dan.

Steely Dan is my favorite band. Jazz, rock. They never disappoint. Not a single bad song. The melodies are great, the lyrics are great, the musicians are great. You just cannot go wrong with The Dan for adult music. Smooth as glass. Fine as wine, etc. etc. Oh, yeah!

I’ve been listening.to Steely Dan since I was a college freshman, 1976, or that’s when I knew who they were. I was a music student in college, and this music just blew me away right out of my classical music training!

This song is historic. This is the 1st song ever to use a drum machine playing samples of real drums. In 1980, this is about 5 years ahead of state of the art. The band gave the recording engineer $75,000 to build a device to play drum samples. They had previously tried several drummers but nobody could play as robotic as they wanted.

I turned 19 when this was popular, so it really spoke to me. The guy saying, "nice..skate a little lower..." was the kind of stuff I heard all the time. It really was part of being 19 and having older men checking me out at clubs. So that's kind of a creepy/funny part of the song. That was how it was back then. For the record, I knew who Aretha Franklin was, long before that. Sheesh. Thank goodness the music and execution were so awesome. It made me not hate the song, because I would have felt awful hating any Steely Dan song.

Jazz fans tend to love Steely Dan, but so do rock and r&b fans. They're a real unique treasure.

This song has such a memory for me. I went out to eat in a nice Mexican restaurant with my mother in April of 1981. She basically asked me, "So, what are you doing after high school? What are you going to do with your life?" Serious stuff. This song was playing in the background that afternoon. Sadly, that restaurant really went downhill in the years to follow. But I've always had this memory.

Glad you liked this one by Steely Dan, India. They are always interesting to listen to, the variations of melodies and harmonies, a bit of unexpected bits, so creative. Please do more of theirs. I like the instrumentation of Bodhisattva and Peg, but any of those mentioned here are worth a listen!

Steely Dan was (technically) just two guys. They would seek out and hire the best studio musicians they could find for each song -- using one drummer on one track, another for the next for example. They would listen to different musicians play for each song and choose which one they thought was best. It's why the instrumentation quality is so amazing.

Anything by Steely Dan... honestly don't think they've ever made a bad song. Masters.

They were story tellers..You will find this theme amongst all the songs. Donald Fagen and Walt Becker ( RIP) . Check out "The Making of" You Tube. and the history behind them. They used the best session players for their songs and all were different. So Donald and Walter were behind the magic and they had "Dream Team'" players with the sound! One of my favorite groups. 1968 baby here so I've been listening to them for YEARS now and I never get tired!

Steely Dan has a very unique sound. Many good songs that have been very overplayed to people over 45 and have listened to the radio their whole lives.. For a new listener it should be very pleasing to the ear. They are a excellent band.Add Dirty Work to the request list below. You're very interested in lyrics and feel of music. Huh, look how right away you got into the groove!, huh?, huh?, right?!, whats that verse,..."please take me along when you slide on down"💃, ...girl they took you along alright, ...and the jam at the end, I believe it's Fagan on the keyboards, that well at the time recorded I know he was sorta a perfectionist and would sometimes do a verse or chord over and over till it sounded the way he wanted, but whoah that part at the end sounds so "on the fly", adlib, impromptu and improvisational, and also has Dave Brubeck's influence all over it, you'll probably hear that in a lot of their music, which mostly is jazz infused. He probably was a big fan of Brubeck, he's a little older than me but Brubeck spanned decades of musical genius, Fagan and I were both born within that span and grew up seeing him, I saw Brubeck on Christmas specials, and on Ed Sullivan when the show was still in black and white, on into the transition to color. Brubeck influenced as he himself was still musically innovating, he just was nominated 7, 10 years ago for another Grammy, he was amazing, virtuoso and I think the nomintion came either the year he died or maybe the year after, not sure, but still creating up until he left the planet. Fagan gives him an honorable mention in the song "New Frontiers "? And SD most certainly carries the jazz baton. Thats that groove, that smoke filled room, glasses clinking, drinks flowing, lowly lit, and jazz group on stage making brilliance they creat look so effortless and casual. The Cuervo Gold.
