Hey India. I was just a poor white boy growing up in the 1970s, in Chicago. I first heard this song in 1979, when I was 12 years old. Well, I knew that he was talking about black women, and I listened to him. Later on, I got me some brown sugar. I was the first man in the history of my family to have a child with a black woman. Back in the day, we all thought the song was about a white dude falling in love with a black girl. We only had the Rolling Stones Brown Sugar to go by-which was about inter-racial relationships in the 1960s. I honestly never thought about it as being about drugs before. But I can see how that could come to mind today. I guess we weren’t very sophisticated back then, LOL! A culturally forbidden love was much closer to our mind-set than a drug we thought of as a poison used by big city folks. Now that I’m older, I can see the drug reference as being another possibility, though. But if you don’t mind, I’m going to keep thinking it’s a “love conquers all” song instead of one about drugs. I like the thought of love being to change someone’s life. I’ve always thought that romance is a powerful force that changes people for the better.
