I like to use a large ratchet and dead blow hammer to press the joints in, those c/u frame presses never seem to stay perfectly square and things tend to bind more than should be. medium impact and hammer works ok too, just bang on the press-frame in direction your pressing the join it, seems to keep it square and go in much smoother

throttle bottle I have to agree there, I'm pretty disappointed in them so far. I've already destroyed the upper ball joint in my control arm. Lifetime warranty but it should last longer than 10k miles.

used to be the rubber was still good when the joint flat wore out, now the boots tear m grease exits water/salt/debris intrudes and game over. they act like nobody owned or seen the 90's and previous vehicles :)

Looks like a lot of highway miles because brake pedal is slightly worn. Which is a good thing in my opinion so that would explain the great condition of the truck.
@Tokimime316 жыл бұрын
Good job overall, I personally would not use an impact to put a spindle nut back on because that could potentially damage the bearings in the hub assembly. I personally just use a torque wrench to put those back on. It's fine to use an impact to take the spindle nut off though. Just thought I'd share that with you, otherwise great job!

Ford vans always eat ball joints... I've seen them go to shit in under 40k miles. In my experience the lower right usually goes bad first. Napa has started selling these green ball joints. You can tell they're pretty good just by looking at them. You should NEVER tighten the axle nut with an impact wrench. If it's too loose or too tight, either way can damage the wheel bearing. You should know that Daniel. Always torque the axle nut to specification with a torque wrench..... and if you're re-using the old nut (which is not recommended but many people do it anyway) I'd recommend adding some blue thread locker for peace of mind. It's also worth mentioning that you should make sure the weep hole on the boot is pointing away from the brake rotor. This prevents excess grease from contaminating the brakes. Some ball joints even contain specific instructions mandating which way the joint is clocked.
@alb123456726 жыл бұрын
I used to believe that too but I've seen a Ford dealer tech do it to a newer truck with an impact when I got my truck inspected. Guess it is an old wives tale. I still use the torque wrench though.

@@alb12345672 sloppy tech. Shops nowadays have way less master techs and their main priority is checking what the new less trained techs do. It's not the good old days anymore.

Pretty good video but i would never recommend tightening a tire with a battery power impact and then just putting the center cap on. Make sure when the vehicle hits the ground you torque the tire down with a torque wrench and then put the center cap on.
@eddiecruz26133 жыл бұрын
U don't have to use torque wrench when u lower vehicle just use a tire star and tighten them till u hear a squeaking sound and u know its tightened

Here come the torque natzis... your doing it just like I would do it. Ive personally seen many other of the mechs ands techs in the dealer and shops ive worked at do it the same way. Is it 100% right? No but you get a feel for torque when you work on vehicles every day. Nice video Daniel. Thanks for sharing
@Krankie_V6 жыл бұрын
once you witness a new bearing failing in 2 weeks from not being torqued properly, you learn to take the extra 2 minutes to tighten the axle nut correctly.
@reweydewy6 жыл бұрын
Krankie V Not gonna lie and be a troll. I hear you 100%. It's the guy tightening the axle nut that may have caused the bearing failure, or just using junk parts, or the cusomer slammed a pot hole or curb. Even installed with a torque wrench ive seen them fail within 4 to 6 months. Depends on many factors. Of my 10 years I've personally never had an issue that I know of. Not saying a torque wrench is not the right thing
@alb123456726 жыл бұрын
I've also seen dealer techs use an impact. The advance auto parts manager said the cheap hubs fail early because of cowboys like Daniel. They are often back in a few months. I think he is full of shit though, the value bearings are just garbage.

@NOLAItsNotOva6 жыл бұрын
SuperGolfguy11 Ripped boots is a common sign. Another way to test them, is to grab the wheel at the 12 o clock and 6 o clock positions and pull. If there is clunking or movement, most of the time that's ball joints

What Happened on my 1993 Sentra SE-R was, every time i would accelerate, the front of the car would shift to the left. As soon as i let off the gas, it would shift back to the center. And i could hear a squeaking noise when it shifted. The passenger side joint was bad, so i replaced both control arms and new joints.

rusco321 what bearing? The wheel bearing or the cv joint?
@rusco3216 жыл бұрын
Steven Vanheel It's the same nut. The nut that goes on the cv axle also holds the bearing together with the right amount of clamping force, if set at the correct torque.
@Mike_Can_Fix-it Жыл бұрын

ball joints should be greased before installation or a least greased before you attach the steering knuckle to em. at 6:24 you can see he's almost torn the new top ball joint by twisting it.
@Krankie_V6 жыл бұрын
that's not twisted at all, that's just the severe angle of the control arm. The manufacturer actually recommends putting a jack under the lower control arm to apply weight to the suspension before tightening the ball joint nuts so that they are installed at the angle of normal operation.
