I had a hip replacement to fix a joint worn out by 40 years of martial arts training, conditioning and fitness activities. This video details the first 4 weeks of my recovery, going from barely being able to stand up to climbing a mountain.
Part 1 is available here: • Hip Replacement after ...
And while I've got your attention, go grab my free PDF checklist of BJJ positions and techniques at www.grapplearts.com/book
No matter what your own injury is, don't give up hope and keep on fighting for a better tomorrow!

These recovery vlogs are great. It’s so fascinating how depending on simple choices, we can go from completely debilitated to vibrant and healthy.

Got my hip replaced also when I was 43 in 2018.. osteoarthritis from martial arts. I had impingement that I didn't know about until it was to late. Dealt with pretty bad pain and movement difficulties for 10 years or so but was able to push through training bjj and muay thai still. I have a titanium hip now and no limitations..its like nothing was ever wrong. I train bjj everyday now with no pain or issues. I was back on the mat after about 4 months maybe. I just got my black belt this year.

That's awesome to hear! I need to get my right hip replaced and it's got so bad that I've pretty much stopped training (Muay Thai) for the last year. I could go back but would be very limited and it's disheartening. I should still do what I can in the meantime but I hope to be able to get the hip replaced sometime in the next couple of years and have a successful recovery, become pain-free and still be able to train.

Hey I’m 45, tore my hip labrum and found some bad underlying arthritis. Will eventually need hip replacement down the line. Are there any restrictions when training? Been training Jiu jitsu since 2006 and have a brown belt. Worried it might pop out during training or something

Hi Stephen, 12 years ago I had a hip resurfacing here in Montreal at age 48 . Went really well, but I was limping for 10 weeks after surgery, due to abductor weakness, not pain. This was a miraculous procedure for me. Prior to surgery my pain was on average 15 on 10. After surgery it was 0 on 10. At 6 months I was back on the mats (wrestling, Judo, Ju Jitsu). Looks like you are making a fantastic recovery for 4 weeks. Best advice I can give you is to take your time. Wishing you continued success in your recovery process.

@@jethrox827 yes titanium and ceramic combined. The "joint" is ceramic, so it glides easily. The rest of it is titanium. Its usually the bone that the replacement is attached to that wears away. So either up at the pelvis, or down in the femar part. For me it's the pelvis area that's wearing away

I am on day 2 of my hip surgery recovery and panicking that I can't lift my leg at all, it's so reassuring to know that this is normal and there is a path forward. Most literature online is directed at patients who are sedentary to begin with and return to a sedentary life after surgery, so this is much appreciated, even just to see it can be done. Thank you!

I am 49 bjj for 20,, and I am 7 weeks out from hip replacement. I cringed when I watched your video. Getting in and out of bed wrong, doing bridges, walking HOW FAR?? NO WAY. Folks, this is a major surgery with many precautions. Your strength and being in shape will work against you at times. It will make you push to far and too hard. Slow and steady will get you through. Your ego will say I'm going for a walk and then your body will put you in check. Watching you even getting up and down on the mat 4 weeks out is nuts. Be patient, get to 8 weeks and the limitations start to come off. Wish you the best on your recovery! My doc said 6 months before he will clear me to be on the mat

Thank you for these videos and I hope you'll find time to continue posting about your recovery and return to training. I'm scheduled for bilateral hip replacement in 3 months and it has been difficult to find info specific to training BJJ afterward. These 2 videos are, by far, the most comprehensive account I've found. While my surgeon said I could return after about 6 months, there's a lot of conflicting info about the risk of dislocation and now I wonder if he really understood the range of motion it entails. I'm curious if your recent lasso spider & omaplata videos were recorded before or after surgery. If it was after, it appears the new hip is serving you well.

Thanks so much, Stephan, for this video. I'm likewise like you into martial arts, and my job is very labor intensive. From start to finish, I have been waiting over 3.5yrs for hip resurfacing. Unfortunately, today, the surgeon called me and said that my hip socket is underdeveloped and doesn't think hip resurfacing will work on me. Now I'm looking at full hip replacement. This was so hard to take. I thought no more martial arts, no more weight training. Worst yet, my other hip will eventually need to be done. And because I'm having a full hip replacement on one side, I now have to do it on the other side. No hip resurfacing. I'm pretty depressed about it. I don't think I will ever be able to be 100% to do martial arts again. Sorry for the long comment. Thank you for sharing your story. People have no idea how much pain hip arthritis is. Feels like your 90yrs old. I am totally subscribing to your channel, wishing you all the best on your journey to recovery. Thanks again Stephan

Thanks, Stephan. I found both the pre- and the post-surgery video very encouraging. As I type this, I am 1 week post surgery. I had a similar experience in the first few days. I was achy and did take narcs to stave off the pain. Good on the pain side, bad on the gut side (constipation). I did get a laxative that finally worked by day 5 post-op. I was also off narcs by then. Physical therapy goals for the first 2 weeks for me will be to continue weight bearing as tolerated, bridges and knee presses. Question: did you notice that the surgery side femur is a bit longer?

in rehabilitation train to the edge of pain and then move back a littel bit so you don't enter pain and do your training in that range of motion without pain. that way you never need days off and get in way more volume. it's also a good idea to only do a few reps at a time but 3-7 times a day with recovery time inbetween. you will find that you can constantly push the range of motion just a littel bit further and will soon have full range of motion back. i' ve seen people do the spits again (that could do them before). you might also consider to take up small circle jiu jitsu since it is very well adapted to people with injuries or limits to their range of motion. good recovery to you!

I was told my left hip was eligible for replacement per x-ray but I said I wasn't experiencing any discomfort so Doctor said just let me know. I started having hip pain and limping Aug 22. BUT about the same time I changed my diet. I started eating 50-75% meat on each plate and reducing processed food and sugar. My hip pain and limp went away and has not returned. 😂 I walk 6 miles a day and started strength training. 7 months ago started jiu-jitsu. ❤❤❤ DIET MATTERS

Hi Stephan, I've trained BJJ for 7 years now and I'm only 29 years old and I already got arthritis and need hip replacement. I've been so sad & devastated that this has already happen to me in such a young age. The doctors is telling me that I will never come back to the sport and that I should not go back to the sport because of this. I'm really lost and dont know what to do, they are saying its up to me to live with the pain as long as I can or already do the surgery. Totally up to me, Have not been able to train for 7 months because of the pain. My goal has always been to be a black belt one day and now I got injured right when I was about to be brown belt. BJJ is my biggest hobby and the high point of the week. Any advice for a young bjj athlete with hip arthritis?? doctors are telling me that I should not train after I do the hip surgery aswell because it can dislocate and thats not good...

No, I had a posterior lateral surgery using a dual mobility implant

@@StephanKesting oh wow usually posterior takes way longer to recover. I just had a few weeks ago the anterior approach and after surgery the doctor said no restrictions just to be careful not to fall. But I’m feeling great and healing fast. No tendons or muscles cut.

Try to do not to get a new regular movement pattern with asymmetry of your hip joints. It could bring serious issues in long term.

Rothman Orthopedics told me I needed a hip replacement 2 years ago. I said NO THANKS. I got a stem cell treatment instead. Afterwards I won a gold medal at IBJJF in Oklahoma City in June 2021. I'm 56.

50 year old here, I stopped doing BJJ when like you said a 20something steroid monkey cranked my neck and gave me a hairline crack. Yeah us older guys need to be cautious of our body parts 👍👍
