Don't get too excited. This first round matchup was a 'gimme' for Stephens. Her opponent didn't move.

Wow this is the highest level Sloane has played at in a while. Her heavy topspin really suits the surface and her movement is great

Well, that's a big *DUH* as Pliskova is a stationary target, with her extremely poor movement. Stephens' record going into this match was 4-1. That says it all.

I think it is because she has matching power, but much better movement than Pliskova. She also has something that Pliskova never will have...........a Slam!

Very tough opening round for both, but esp on clay, Stephens far superior movement is always going to beat Pliskova's more brittle mobility

It was a very interesting playstyle from Stephens, feeling too loosed with her shots and with much confidence at the moment of attacking. Good start from RG for the American.

love watching sloane glide on clay. Her forehand is so fluid and powerful..she totally deserved the french open title in 2018. She lost to a doper named Simona Halep. Oh yes, I went there

Surprisingly I think clay fits Sloane’s playing style the best. Her movement has always looked a bit sluggish for me but on clay she uses the sliding to her advantage very well and saves her energy. High hopes of seeing her deep in the tournament.

I wouldn't say a 30 year old professional tennis player is "past their prime." In fact, many might actually be in their prime at that point in their careers.

@@stonew1927 could be but Pliskova is not the great mover and her weapons was the serve and forehand. She seems to lose some mph on the serve that impacts rest of her tennis.

Karolina has played a lot of matches like this of late - hardly running for balls and as if she's barely trying... It's hard to fathom - no-one enjoys losing surely yet she just goes through the motions. Yet when she's playing well she's still a handful for anybody in the world.

This type of playing works for Pliskova, because Pliskova is still a bit of a lazy player when it comes to movement, but Sloane hit down the middle WAAAY too much for me to see her getting pass a tougher opponent who would eat those shots up.

I watched the other highlights of this match, and I have to say, Caro actually looks like she is moving better than she normally does. Dont get me wrong, she's not "brilliant", I just mean better than what I thought she used to.

Clay blunts her weapons and exposes her weak movement more than any surface. For a European that is surprising as most of them grow up playing in the surface.
