I only just found out about these today and stared at my first one for about 20 minutes! Just a question though, am I supposed to see colour because I can only see the outline of the person

Good job at seeing these. Unfortunately, you will only see the color of the pattern. If you are interested in a similar trick that shows colour, search for parallel view images. Also check out the magiceye subreddit for static images with more depth.

Very cool!! What's the reason for such a low frame rate? Is it just a lot more work/processing power, or is there something about viewing stereograms that would make a really smooth frame rate impossible?

It was originally done to help more people see these in video form, as I had several comments about the high (regular/original) frame rate. A "sticky" frame rate was implemented. An added bonus was youtube compression artefacts seemed to be reduced in comparison to full frame rate versions. I'm looking for a sweetspot.
