I saw Genesis Revisited in 2015 in Baltimore. Dynamite show - so thankful that Steve Hackett took his band on the road. He is such a knowledgeable and experienced guitarist and he is proof that the best humor contains an element of truth (i.e."You never know with Tony, which version you're going to get."). SH cracks me up.

Thanks a bunch for the hint! I just looked that up. To be honest I had absolutely no idea whatsoever what the song is about (as frankly is the case with most Gabriel-era songs for me - it got somewhat more comprehensible for me later on). Ignorant Hun that I am I was only talking about the music.

@@Producelikeapro: a huge fan I would call myself also - an Englishman however I am absolutely not, and so I really tend to have a hard time with Genesis' Gabriel-era lyrics, as most references are absolutely lost on me and more often than not I'm not even sure whether it's my meagre English-skills or my lack of knowledge regarding English history, folklore, and what not - especially since there seem to be quite a few (and then some) plays on words, which of course have the potential to make it extra-hard for a non-native speaker (or outrightly wreak complete havoc on any attempt) to make sense of of it all - these lyrics are just way too advanced in every regard for this dumb German bloke here. 😂

The Defector tour was the first show I saw. I mean litterally the first show I've ever seen. I was 16. The bar was set high for anything coming later. And I got a Fender medium pick from a roadie when they were taking down the stage after the performance. Exactly like the one shown on the inner sleeve of the album.

There is genuine love for music in what you ''produce'', even before technicality or gear, and you manage to blend in everything explaining the magic without erasing it.

Steve Hackett really did his own thing. Back in the 70s, every other guitarist was playing blues licks, but Steve weaved these lyrical lines in and out of the music in a way that no one else did. A very unique player - I'm a huge fan.

Great interview Warren. I only wish it was longer and that you could have meet him in person. First time i heard of him was when he guested on Gandalf's album Gallery of Dreams and then his live album Live in Vienna. Then i found his solo work and his amazing work in Genesis. He's a great guitarist and songwriter!

Had the pleasure of meeting Steve with his girlfriend at the time, Kim Poor back on 12th May 1979 at the Hammersmith Odeon. He had snuck into the Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel & Steve Harley memorial concert for Bill Duffield, who was a Lighting technician who unfortunately was killed early on Kate's tour. Quick chat, said I'll see him next Saturday, which i did, as he was playing Hammy Odeon himself. From memory he was sitting in L35/L36.

Steve seems to be one of the most-interviewed musicians these days, incredibly generous with his time - I have to say, I enjoyed this brilliant interview at least as much as any of them. I'd love to hear from some of the orchestral musicians who played on his renditions of the classic Genesis songs, how it felt to play that music. The arrangements in the live shows were extremely skilful and satisfying.

Great interview. It is incredible how Steve could make a magic sound. At the time of the album Foxtrot (1972,1973), in the studio, he used a Marshall Supa Fuzz, Shaftesbury Duo Fuzz, and Volume Swell pedal after the Fuzzes, even though he had used before the Fuzzes, such as in his previous album "Nursery Cryme" on "The Fountain of Salamacis" and "Seven Stones." Sometimes, Hackett used the Fuzz pedal with a saturated Fuzz tone; He sometimes used the Cry Baby Wah-wah pedal before the Fuzz to add a different tone quality, boosting specific frequencies and a two-way switch to create high harmonics. Hackett selected the neck pickup, which had its tone control all the way back, attenuating high frequencies and reducing the noise created by the Fuzz. He recorded the Foxtrot with a little amp Fender Champ and sometimes used the Leslie Speaker Cabinet to record his Gibson Les Paul, Hagstrom BJ-12, and for "Horizons," he used a Yamaha 6-string Steel.

Thank you! One more thing: in "Supper's Ready," he used Duo Fuzz to do the solo in the middle of part III, but nowadays, he uses SamAmp. In part V, "Willow Farm," he used the Duo Fuzz for single lines, but he recorded part of it just going to the Fender amp using natural distortion; in part VI, "Apocalypse in 9/8, he used the champ amp clean sound, but nowadays, to punch more, Steve uses Pete Cornish Iron Treble Booster Pedal and in part VI "A Sure As Eggs Is Eggs" at the end of the song, he used Tonebender Pedal, sometimes using it with volume pedal to remove the attack. Live, in 1973, he used Hiwatt 100W, Hiwatt 150w 4x12 Cabinets. Congratulations on your great channel!

Great interview. Steve's a great guy. Barrios said something like "To be a guitarist one must bathe in the fountain of culture." That's definitely Steve. Got to meet him once, talked about music and guitars (obviously) but also books, philosophy, the paranormal.

This moment when the UV lights go on, this massive Mellotron sounds lifts up the venue‘s roof and two glowing eyes stare at you is just mindblowing ! Experienced this several times with The Musical Box. I have this „live at the Rainbow“ DVD in 5.1 of the Live Box set which is nothing but brilliant. Saw Steve also live In Hamburg once with Nicky Beggs and once withe Roine Stolt. His guitar sound is amazing, I remember they had a 5.1 PA setup which sounded great. Great stuff Warren !! You’re not one of those who ignore artists as Mike Oldfield, Yes, Genesis….. I appreciate that !

@@Producelikeapro Peter Gabriel era Genesis were inspirational for me as a young teen in the 70's. 'Foxtrot' was the first album I heard that wasn't my parents' Easy Listening; you might imagine how mind-blowing that was. I could never thank the band enough. For me Steve is one of the best guitarists ever because he serves the music with open-hearted genius. That progressive line up are still my favourite band and listening to Steve's work on 'Forth of Fifth' still makes me cry at 60+.Along with some classical and English folk it's the closest we can get to the Divine in my opinion. I love all genres by the way. There aren't many albums that can bear repeated listenings and never get old, other than the four L.P.s 'Nursey Cryme' to 'Selling England by the Pound'. I'd say only Yes's 'Close to the Edge' and 'Fragile' and Steely Dan's classic run from 1972-76 - with the amazing work of Denny Diaz and Skunk Baxter - and Steelye Span's first album can do that, after all this time, not including classical music.

His style of playing has aways different from other guitarist his dark and eerie melodies with the Ebo slide makes his playing is something to die for. I remember getting his first album which the vocalist from Kansas plus the late great Richie Havins was on it. I love the interviews with all my favorite artist from across the pond. Thanks again.

A little Steve Hacket story... One fine summer's day about 15 years ago, I thought I'd rehearse a Bach repertoire of cello suites and luteworks on the guitar for an upcoming 'gig' and decided on the South Bank outside the Tate Modern to see how the public - and of course myself - would react to the idea. Ten minutes in a lovely lady walked over and dropped a tenner in my case just as I finished a piece and before I could speak she beat me to it: 'Beautiful,' she said. 'My son plays the guitar, you know.' 'Oh really,' I replied, thinking it might be one of 'those' conversations. 'Yeah,' she said. 'You might have heard of him - Steve Hacket. He was in Genesis. Did very well for himself...' Then she pointed to my old classical and said: 'Never heard him play like that though...' And with that she walked off. Did it make my day? I don't think there's a guitarist I haven't told that story to.

Great interview! I've been a fan since the late seventies when I got introduced to Genesis -- as well as all things prog -- by my music-major college roommate. I remember actually running into Steve and Kim Poor in the mid '80s. A friend and I were in New Orleans for a GTR concert at the Saenger Theatre. Earlier in the afternoon we were killing a few hours at the old Jackson Brewery (by that time a shopping mall) and saw Steve and Kim. We were able to speak for a few minutes and moved on. Very polite and personable and a totally unique musical voice.

The last Genesis album I can listen to in its entirety is Wind And Wuthering. Everything after Steve left I could put on a 'hits' playlist. Nothing against Darryl Steurmer, but he didn't bring anything to Genesis other than someone to do Steve's parts live. The textures that Steve weaves in something like Ripples, the soaring solo in Firth of Fifth. Steve has a unique vision of the guitar's place in pop music. I hope I get to see him before we're both too deecrepit.
