'Dream of the Blue Turtles' is a banger of an album. I highly recommend 'Children's Crusade' and 'We Work The Black Seam Together'

Powerful vocal from Sting here, and the haunting melody has that typical "slavic" sound. PS: Sting made a wonderful song called "Rise & Fall" with Craig David ... who coincidentally is touring the US in May ... 😊

Sting is an incredible artist. He did beautiful duets with Lady Gaga and many others. Two other beautiful songs are 'Fragile' and 'Fields of Gold'.

if anyone ever doubted the deep humanity of the Russian soul they should listen to their composers, especially Shostakovich. Unfortunately this empathy & sensitivity is seldom displayed by their leaders throughout history ...

This about the 50 year Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union ( Russia ) And when he says There’s no monopoly on common sense on either side of the political fence he’s not talking about Democrats and Republicans ( he’s a Brit so why would he give a F ) he’s talking the US and our NATO allies and the Soviet’s ( Russians ) and their Warsaw Pact ( Russia’s NATO equivalent) And their was no "Paranoia" about the Soviet’s they were definitely the enemy and if either sides military stepped one foot over Check Point Charlie ( AKA the Berlin Wall) the dividing line between East and West Germany in the City of Berlin there was no question both sides would bring their Nuclear forces to their highest alert and it would only be a matter of which side would launch first The songs speaks not about the Russian or American people He’s talking about the Soviet Primier ( Russian leader) and his Generals and The American President and the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon Because these men held the fate of world in their hands not the ordinary people of either nation That’s why back in those days most people tried not to think about how dangerous the Cold War was too much Because at anytime of the day or night one mistake of deliberate action by either side would literally mean the end of Civilization as we know it!!!

The song is about the Cold War. The both sides he sings of are "The East" and "The West" (east and west relative to Berlin). There is no analogy to domestic politics. The situation today between Russia and Europe is nothing like back then. Russian leadership today is terrible compared with back then when the USSR at least had an ideology focused on the future. Today they seem dead set on building a Czarist Imperial Empire befitting the great power struggles of the 19th century. Lots of Little Hitlers and Wannabe Hitlers in the world today...

By “I hope the Russians love their children too” I don’t think it’s just about acknowledging humanity. I think it’s asking what the effect of escalating a war will have on the next generation. They will grow up witnessing the war. They will need to rebuild all that was destroyed by the whims of a current leader. They will suffer the biggest sacrifices when their homes and families are destroyed. They are the ones that should convince the leaders that war isn’t worth it.

I'd have to say what was true when Sting wrote this is no longer the case. In the '80s we were in a nuclear stalemate, and I think both sides had some valid fears but over-reacted. Today's Russia under Putin is a very different animal, nakedly attacking a peaceful neighbor.

It's 'Liberal' to question mutual assured destruction and a wasteful arms race? To implore two superpowers to find common humanity so they don't kill hundreds of millions of people and condemn the entire planet to nuclear Armageddon?
