How many times have you heard “never ever let your knees go over your toes it’s wrong!” Well not necessarily ❗️
It’s bad enough having to figure out how to train your body and figuring out what you need to do let alone people making you feel scared and overwhelmed over things that really are not as big of an issue as you might thing!

You might be lacking mobility in the back, shorter hamstrings maybe. It’s not a good idea to put pressure on knee joints if you are squatting heavy. You can actually damage your knees. But on the other hand if you do specific exercises aimed at strengthening your knees, that’s when you take your knees over your toes, but smaller weights, gradual progress

I always kind of assumed this simply came out of more performance based sports. We definetley have this as a rule in my martial art. Not for anything health related, but because when you go beyond your toes with your knee you have a suboptimal positionto exert force, meaning footwork will be a lot more taxing, while also being slower. No reason to avoid something more taxing for the muscle though if your goal is to tax the muscle, as long as you keep it healthy.

it's not about mobility. when your knees go over your toes, weight of your body exerts force tangential to your knee. so that means you are stressing your pcl (posterior cruciate ligament). same goes if your knees go sideways. your mcl and lcl will be stressed. as you progress, of course your ligaments will become stronger. but why stress your ligaments unnecessarily when you can exercise or build muscles with lesser stress on those ligaments.

@joeyhext1957
@joeyhext1957 Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you had that experience! However as a physical therapist, I would suggest you try to avoid generalising your experience to others. For the same reason that it’s ok to have knees over toes, it’s ok for knees to go in or out as we squat. The real problem comes from being too aggressive with loading on people/body parts that are unprepared for it. Point is you can get injured with “perfect” form just as much as you can without it.
@tommydevine9993
@tommydevine9993 Жыл бұрын
@@joeyhext1957 well, not "just as much" though. The reason bad form is associated with higher injury risk is that it generally puts structures under more stress. If the loading is higher, those higher stresses have a higher chance of causing injury. Some people might have different capabilities to bend, but generally speaking, bad form is still bad and should be avoided where possible.
@joeyhext1957
@joeyhext1957 Жыл бұрын
@@tommydevine9993 so my full take is that yes, generally speaking as loads increase (be that volume, intensity or frequency) on a given structure, be that a tendon, joint capsule, ligament, meniscus or muscle fibre, the chance of an overload event goes up, that’s not especially controversial I think. Secondly, different techniques for a given lift will put different structures that are differently able to accept load, under load. So lifting with technique A is more likely to expose some tissue to loads that it can’t handle compared to technique B, because it’s loading different, stronger tissues. Again, I don’t think that’s controversial. However when it comes to general population exercise, the most important thing is consistency which means moving in a comfortable way which may lead to “suboptimal” techniques which are less biomechanically efficient and load weaker tissues. However where I tend to disagree with people is that this is ok. So long as the loads are managed appropriately, you know what you’re gonna do to those weaker tissues by progressively loading them? You’re gonna make them strong tissues. So take lumbar flexion in squats. We know that that places more force on the lumbar discs. But lumbar discs are not brake discs on a car with a limited and known service life. They are biological tissues which will strengthen and adapt to the loads they encounter. So if squatting with butt wink is comfortable for you, then do it and get strong in that movement pattern.

The doctor told me not to do this. Here’s why. I was a caregiver for 4 years and I had to squat, help stand, and set back down, a woman who weighed just 130lbs. I am tall and her wheel chair was very low because she was short. So I had to squat extremely low, had great form, but one problem. I was going past the 90 degree angle that everyone tells us to do for squatting and my knee always went past my ankle. 4 years of doing this caused a stress fracture in my right ankle. That is a fracture that happens over time when putting too much stress on a specific spot. The doctor told me it’s because of the squat lifting and how it had to be done and told me it’s very common among caregivers. Please do not let your knee go past your ankle. It causes more stress over time and can cause a fracture in your ankle. It took 3 months to heal and now I have to be very careful I can’t even sit on my ankle. Even though I was very flexible, athletic, and never had a problem or felt pain from squatting like that, it STILL happened. When you squat past your ankle, as you come up, the front outer base of the ankle has to work extra hard. Overtime it will cause a fracture on the bone.

Mobility will vary from person to person but science not. If you extend your knee a lot, a consider amount of force will exert from your knee cap. If your knee cap may strong to withstand the force. But everything has wear and tear. So that's why it's not recommended.

It depends just squat naturally If ur knees automatically go over toes Then there's nothing wrong with it However if it stays then ur body is probably not strong enough or have good genetics

I think if you’re not an athlete there’s no need for your knees to go over your toes but those who are athletes should. I play soccer and it’s important for me to strengthening my joints as I’m shifting and lunging all the time and my knees are not always over my toes.

I'm 5'2 and I find it hard to not have my knees go over my toes when I squat or lungee. My stance is wider than most of my family and my knees have no choice but to go over my toe because that's their comfort level. I tried not to have them go over but my knees were aching after a session.

Thank you for this. Ive been traying to do normal squats and while i look at the mirror and i see my knees going over my toes and i try to keep them behind the toes but then i literally cant squat properly, my tighs stay way to inclined instead of being the same level as my knees and i tried to just throw my butt even farther behind to compensate and i feel my lower back hurting because im bendind my spine too much all just because im not supposed to go over my toes. Thank you for this, i will try to just let my knees bend naturally and see how that goes. :)

There’s a lot wrong with “exercise rules”, like squats. I have long legs and virtually no torso (like the leg-head lady from Family Guy) so when I squat, I lean forwards. I’ve I didn’t, my center of gravity will be off and I’d fall backwards. We all have different skeletons and body compositions. I’m not sure why other fitness instructors think it’s one form fits all.

What about those with femoral anteversion? By nature of our bones the knee will go slightly inwardly and doing anything different is just as painful as a normal person trying to lunge with knees inwards

Knees over toes target the quads. For glutes, knees should be in 90 degrees, not over toes cos you won't feel it in your glutes.

I definitely can’t have knees go past my toes. It cause me horrible knee pain that then causes me pain in other parts of the leg. I knew a person who had a doctorate/phd and they were a exercise trainer for college athletes tell me to stop putting my knees forward during lunges and it helped so much. (Can’t remember their actual job title and what the degree was specifically) but yeah it probably depends on the individual
