For most of the times I've hooped, taking lots of steps on a live dribble is fine. But if you pick it up after that, without bouncing the ball, then it's a problem.

Who are these people? People that have never played basketball before?
@GetHandles

I hear it pretty often from people who've been playing a while. I think the issue is that they weren't taught the rules clearly or correctly when they first learned them, or they misunderstood the rules when they were taught them.

Ppl that haven't played will call ANNNNNNYTHING a travel. Every coach I've had explained it just like in the video. 2nd coach also showed how you can legally dribble the ball, he was kinda dramatic but he was trying to get a point across.

Hey, Coach Jesse. I’ve got a question for you. Say, there’s a guy from an opposite team dashing to the hoop after a turnover and he manages to make at least 3 steps w’out dribbling the ball. I can’t exactly say whether his hand is half way under the ball or not. Maybe it stays more or less on top. Is this considered kinda carry, though? Meaning you’re supposed to dribble at pretty much every step, no matter how fast you run, aren’t ya? Thank you so much, coach! I’ve been following you on KZfaq for quite a while and imho, you’re the best coach ever🏀
@GetHandles
@GetHandles 3 жыл бұрын
That's basically covered in this video. You can take unlimited steps during a dribble as long as the hand position is legal. That wouldn't be a travel, carry or anything else

If you gather the ball with the foot on the floor it counts as first step, doesn't it?
@matthew3563

Hey coach, I have a few questions. If a player blocks you (or touches the ball) while you're in shooting motion midair, but the ball doesn't leave your hand, and you land with the ball still in your hands: 1) Would it be a jumpball violation as I gathered the ball, jumped and landed, without the ball leaving my hand? 2) Would it be a double dribble violation if I dribbled the ball again after I landed?
@stevenclaeys3602
@stevenclaeys3602 3 жыл бұрын
this is a judgement call for the referee. if he deems that the defender prevented the shot from being launched it is indeed a jump ball. if the contact merely startled the shooter and he could have still shot it, it's technically a travel. i don't really like this rule, i think it should be an automatic travel every time. concerning the 2nd question it's never legal to dribble after that because the first action where the aspiring shooter lands without shooting, should always lead to a call (so play stoppage) in either situation.

I really would like you to address the up and under travel debate. to me it's switching pivots but a lot of players get away with it. there's a video of kevin garnett and candace parker debating it.
@GetHandles
@GetHandles Жыл бұрын
Check some of my recent shorts. I've done a bunch on that topic. It's completely legal. People misunderstand pivot rules. I think it's because the way a lot of players were taught pivot rules at a young age was oversimplified and not completely accurate.

My question is, lay ups only allowed two steps, but James Harden step back allowing him the three steps?
@artsietipsie4256
@artsietipsie4256 3 жыл бұрын
I still don't really get how the zero step rule is applied...I just stick with the two steps. And about dribbling, I still remember that my coach told me, "You can move how ever you want with your leg when your dribble is still alive. Hell, just fly if you can while maintaining the dribble."
@GlobusTheGreat
@GlobusTheGreat 3 жыл бұрын
Zero step is just the 2 steps rule. Except at the MOMENT you pick up your dribble (palm the ball, hand goes under the ball, or two hands touch the ball) if a foot is ALREADY on the ground, then it doesn't count as one of your two steps.
@artsietipsie4256
@artsietipsie4256 3 жыл бұрын
@@GlobusTheGreat So, you can have an extra step during layups?
@GlobusTheGreat
@GlobusTheGreat 3 жыл бұрын
@@artsietipsie4256 Not really an 'extra' step but it can feel like it. If you're going for a right hand layup, usually you are going to step with your right foot and then your left foot, and leap off your left for the layup. You could get an "extra" step if you pick the ball up after you step with your left foot (so it's already on the floor when you pick the ball up), and then go into your right-left steps after that. If you delayed your gather and picked the ball up late, after the right foot is already down for your typical 1-2 right-left steps, then you could actually take another step and jump off your right foot for the layup (right foot already down when you pick it up = right foot was the 0 step, and then you get your left foot step, right foot step = your 1,2 step for going up for a layup).
