The sad part is knowing this is just the beginning of what we all knew was coming in the end times. As a baby boomer I've seen some major changes, but nothing like we see today. God help the generations who refuse to turn to Jesus' narrow path.

Both Thomas Aquinas and St Augustine commented on Just war as a right for nations to declare war in self defence.

This is a perfect example of why those who are preaching the Word should be extremely careful when they delve into the political/ military realm. A very high level of discernment needs to be applied when considering the fact that the information given to us by our political and military leadership almost entirely consist of men and women who are beholden to the influence and payoffs from the military industrial complex. Looking back at the attack mentioned by RC, we now know there was a great deal of deception given by the leadership of that time in order to come into that 90% approval for the misdirected retaliation the USA perpetrated. Perhaps the 5% who opposed the war were the only ones exercising that high level of discernment.

As i recall, many in the no retaliation camp, also already knew/believed the 'terrorist attack' was an inside job and had more to it. I would of been for retaliating against those truly responsible.

Obviously turning the other cheek Is only applicable in certain situations Or walking the second mile Or if one asks for your coat Give them your shirt as well!
@DogSoldier1948

The slap (or the “smiting,” as the KJV has it) does not have to involve literal, physical violence. Even in our day, a “slap in the face” is a metaphor for an unexpected insult or offense. I don't see anywhere in the bible That prevents one from protecting themselves are family.

@@DogSoldier1948 Exactly. Every time the Bible teaches against revenge in the Old Testament AND the New, it is referring to sins of the heart- matters concerning jealousy, grudges, slander etc.. it never teaches one to not fight back when physically attacked.

And some of them have more context, as we saw on turning the other cheek. On giving your coat, the context was if you were accused/sued and someone demanded your coat (meaning you were convicted of the accusation) then give them your shirt as well (Truly work to make amends). One can also assume this is from a just judge and judicial process as well. Not if falsely accused (which is a commandment not to bear false witness) and in an unjust system. Walking the second mile is hard to figure a modern context for. But if asked or even compelled to work, use the time to spread the gospel with those you are forced to work with and do a good job of what you were asked or compelled to do.

Thank you for this! Even today you can see backhanding someone as an insult. An invitation to fight, but not actually fighting in itself. If someone were to be knocked out with a backhand, it would be an incredible gesture of dominance/shame, not something admired like an uppercut or hook. I had been questioning on wars and defense as well and it seems to me most sources agree there are no just wars. Defense is permissible, but it seems to me that MEN do not start wars. KINGS start wars where they send men to slaughter one another for the benefit of kings. Or in the contemporary, oligarchs. Men may fight, but rarely if ever do they war. It takes a certain kind of 'leadership' to start a war of people who know nothing about one another aside from the other guy wearing the wrong uniform to murder one another.

All war is not evil, otherwise God could not have commanded it repeatedly in the OT. War against evil is just and righteous, and will be so again as God releases and defeats Satan again at the end of time. The same holds true for man; otherwise we should not bother prosecuting pedophiles, rapists, murderers, thieves etc. God gave us the principles and examples in Scripture to guide us. He is still speaking through His Word.

These days of tyrannical govt's etc... why bother fighting the corruption? Well, RC paints the picture well, when the bear threatens you and you start to fear for your life, action is justified. God created all alive at the moment for such a time as this, and we have to take every thought captive to avoid getting into a trap of fear (so easy if you turn on the tv) but have to share the Gospel and just obey ( I am preaching to myself as well!) And trust the results to God. God is still on the throne, and searching the hearts of men who are sold out for him!

There are just wars, but god himself commanded them. And even then, humans tended to make a mess of it. The Israelites were commanded to drive out the Canaanites but instead took slaves and eventually generations of those people influenced the culture of Israel. I would say be careful about "Defensive" wars as people stretch the definition to "pre-emptive strikes" which is to say, starting wars as the aggressor claiming to be defending yourself.
