My issue with the film is that Michael feels superfluous to the story after he's discovered. He's never more than a plot device, and the movie's halfhearted attempts to humanize him by making him an aspiring astronaut with a sister back on earth don't change that. He's not really allowed to do anything, and is literally told he can't participate in the climax because that's not his job. You could write him out of the movie and replace him with a system malfunction and you wouldn't really have to change much.

@@Akaneblaze1345 Honestly having him participate in the climax would have gone a long way in making him feel relevant. He doesn't even have to be the one to die in the end. Have him go on the first run to get the oxygen and be the one to fall and drop the cannister. Then, he volunteers to sacrifice himself to get the second one since he screwed up the first time but Zoe talks him out of it and goes instead. Just have him do something--anything!

The ending is just sad. David lost all his algae and now the main point of the mission is no longer possible. Zoey is dead so no medic which means the remaining crew could still die from health problem that will likely arise later on the trip. Moreover, Michael as a character felt pointless and how he got stuck on the ship is unexplained. Enjoyed the movie overall though but feels like the remaining 50% of the movie is missing.

Yeah, when the movie I ended, I said, "That's it?!" because it didn't feel like an ending. It felt like the middle and what happens to these three now since the mission would surely have shifted from science to survival. They hadn't explained why there was a stowaway--I honestly thought maybe I missed something when they were interrogating him about how he got in there. I'd like to know how Toni Collette's character was feeling since things went so poorly. I bet she kind of regrets not hitting abort when she knew something was wrong and now the mission is a loss, one person is dead (although wouldn't they ideally still need her suit? Were they going to retrieve it later? Why not let her back in to die?), and now the rest of them might also die because Toni Collette didn't go with her gut and abort.

This. A movie with so much potential, but ended up being absolutely awful. The sadness was pointless, there was no lesson from it, there was no saving grace. It was just a woman dying because of bad circumstances and awful luck, they made it sad, but sad was the entire plot line, and the film relied on it. You cant just do that. No-one wants to watch a movie that makes them cry unless they take something away from it or there is an ultimately happy ending, even romeo and Juliet has weak versions of morales and happy endings, but with this there is nothing to learn, so much left unanswered, so many loose ends, and weird plotholes, and it was sad for the sake of being sad, which just makes an inherently bad movie
@KonradofKrakow
@KonradofKrakow 3 жыл бұрын
@@aidanm5849 I think you failed to grasp the basic point of the movie: life is brutal and sometimes there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. You and/or other might end up suffering no matter how smart you are and how much effort you are willing to put in. The sadness was not pointless at all - it is a grim reminder of "memento mori" for all, especially astronauts. Space is dark, lonely, inhospitable and unforgivable - that's the lesson. If you don't like sadness rooted in realism then consider going back to Star Wars or the Teletubbies.

I think what fascinated me the most about this movie was that it did not follow the typical and expected devices. The character 'arcs' remain flat and without growth but in a good way. These were all decent people who remained, essentially, decent. If the story had followed the more predictable format, then at least one character would have fallen into a despair, one character would have evinced extreme heartlessness, one character would have suddenly gained incredible skills and saved everyone or they all would have made valiant attempts one by one with each one having their own heart rending death scene with perhaps one survivor. I was rather happy the movie didn't follow any of those tropes. In some way, it made the almost mundane approach to saving themselves more dramatic and intense.
@metalnat27
@metalnat27 2 жыл бұрын
My exact thoughts. The movie truly did know what it was. And didn't follow that typical plot line cliche of this one character going rogue out of despair ( which is what I expected ). They all remained natural, professional, and determined accordingly as it honestly would be in real life for the most parts. Me, someone who is obsessed with action movies mainly really liked Stowaway lol.

I dug Stowaway as is, the character arc was mostly David's, Zoe was just good incarnate, selfless and willing to sacrifice herself for others, which didn't need to be tinkered with with some contrived arc. I liked the film but felt annoyed around the reasoning Michael was a Stowaway as it still didn't explain how he would not be missed (you would log in and out at work) and how he became trapped behind a panel that needed to be unscrewed to get him out? I also find it unbelievable that if one part is so important if it fails you die! - you would have at least one spare. I also found it strange the astronauts would not have their visors down on launch and thought the stage separations were too quick, I watch a lot of SpaceX launches and it seemed very quick in comparison.

Really bad, really lazy writing. First: How is it that no one makes an issue of, or investigates how Michael got sealed in an electrical compartment. Its like, "Hey, I found this guy hidden in the wall", and the rest of the crew are like, "Give him something to eat and tell him not to touch anything". WTF?.... Second: The lazy writers obviously didn't do any technical research. It doesn't matter who designed the spacecraft, NASA, Space-x, doesn't matter, they all employ primary, secondary, and tertiary backup systems for just this type of scenario, And they would have packed extra oxygen just in case.... Seriously, was the screenplay written by a high school student?

The problem is not only the lack of character progression as stated in this video , it's that the sacrifice made by Zoe feels not only irrelevant and empty (1 die to save 1 ) but odd. Her selfless behaviour and sacrifice toward others it's something that you may find in a "Médecins Sans Frontières doctor" /humanitarian worker rather a person that is supposed to have spent half of her life (medical degree ,specializations, astronaut training etc) for something that is culminating with this 2 year long mission. David behaviour is far more believable , while he does sympatize with Michael , destroys all his plants for him and offers himself for the last canister , he does feel frustrated about the loss off all his life achievements , he does, when no other solution is possible , accept the fact than one has to die . Michael after breaking the CO2 scrubber and the Captain arm he becomes irrelevant to the plot, he literally is a sad plot device , they could've made him part of the solution of the problems making Zoe sacrifice relevant but no, you could substitute him with a loose CO2 scrubber that falls on the captain and have the same tension, that's why to me the sacrifice of Zoe vs Michael feels empty and irrelevant.
@tramarthomas6105
@tramarthomas6105 3 жыл бұрын
Micheal wasn't irrelevant to the plot. One, he had no relevant skills to the mission, but two, he's a person who can't simply be thrown out of the ship. By the end of the movie, both David and Micheal were in similar positions, that's being useless to the mission. Zoe had little to live for, at least that's what I'm assuming. And from the story she told Micheal, she was suicidal (I don't know about that part, but I'm sure she didn't expect to be saved from drowning). It's also explained that risk were necessary because a humans life was involved. I don't know, maybe I'm just willing to overlook a few things since I like sad, realistic endings. Realistic to me at least

@tramarthomas6105 3 жыл бұрын
Also, by sad plot device, I'm sure you mean what I explained in my previous comment. That being them having to avoid the obvious solution of killing him, but not being able to since he's a human. @Anil-zj1er

Agreed. The problem with that is, people don't necessarily want it to make sense. They are usually after the feelings they have had from the other movies, which is pretty much self-evident, as the critic mention his expectations for the ending and character development. I don't judge that, but they end up enjoying fewer things as the movies have already started to become copies of each other.

One major flaw I saw was where they found Michael. He was behind a panel in a room of the MTS. That part of the spacecraft has been in space for years. If he had damaged a C02 scrubber in the crew module the one in the MTS would be still good.

Hey! Zoe for me was a brilliant character, she was the realistic ambitious girl who was excited for her mission to mars. If they had altered this character the film would lose its essence of realism that it was portraying. Making Zoe a more intense character would alter the films central theme which I believe is a take on The Trolley Problem. With little drama we get to learn more about the characters and how they are all equally responsible for taking on the final task of the movie, ultimately Zoe chose to do this as she accepted she was the only one who 1. was capable and 2. was willing enough and I think this reflects well on the character making her death for me feeling hollow for a moment after the film. ✨

If Zoe had taken the lethal injection with her that Michael was supposed to use she could have died peacefully instead of the slow and painful death of sitting there burning to death from the radiation. Speaking of radiation, wouldn’t the oxygen canister Zoe gave crew before she died be radioactive like she had become? In the beginning of the movie during the take off you see the crew violently shaking in their padded chair, seatbelt and helmet. How did Michael survive that? For Michael to be working on that section he would be standing on a latter, remove the screws of the panel and put the panel aside. Instead, he removes the panel, climbs up into that area and somehow the panel is put back in place and screwed shut until the captain removes the panel and Michael drops out. Ridiculous. I watched it cause I like Kendrick, but this was one of her less reactive roles. It was fairly obvious she would sacrifice herself considering she had no family backstory and could not pilot the ship. Michael had Ava and David had a wife, and Commander had to pilot the ship with a broken arm. The other thing a bit troubling is the misconception of gravity or artificial gravity as it pertains to the first tank. When Zoe drops the first tank, it would either float slowly enough to tether and reach for it or something other than just drop like a ton of bricks, considering there is no gravity in space. I think the physics of how the tank would react after Zoe lost it, were a bit off, among some other issues of being in space.

I think you’re misunderstanding the artificial gravity conceit. It’s centripetal force that’s acting as “gravity,” which is applied to all the objects including the people and the oxygen tank(s) that are attached. Once the tank is detached (dropped), it already has momentum and will continue on the trajectory it was imbued, which takes it away (flying away) from everything else. Objects in motion stay in motion at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force. It would be breaking Newton’s first law if the tank didn’t fly away and just floated.

Why is a dramatic shift necessary for a worthy character arc? You mention Stowaway isn't an action film like Life, and I infer it's not an epic story like Star Wars either... If it's meant to be a tragedy exploring human psychology, isn't it fitting that fate is inescapable ? Especially in light of the years 2020 and 2021 (so far), I feel it's a valid commentary that it's always the same people shouldering the burden, and very very few of the other have an epiphany that changes their chosen trajectory. Examples are rife, from nonchalant misuse of masks to full-on extremism. I think the parallellism of the opening and closing shots actually demonstrate how little change was possible. B- A broken part that is critical to the survival of the crew would have all kinds of computer fail safes to warn of any malfunction or damage to a critical system. If it was that easy to launch with damaged systems 90% of people who have went to space on the Shuttle, to the Space Station, would die. C- Full exposure to a solar flare would kill you the second she stepped out of the airlock. It wouldnt be a slow, poignant death like they made it. The movie had potential, but the glaring nonsensities ruined it for me.

Hmm I think the movie flew over the "think story" guy's head. Zoe is the idealist. You know this from her career in the medical field, her lack of directed aims but hope that she will indeed make advances in medicine, her vehement defence of the stowaway and finally, based on the story she gives explaining her experience as a lifeguard, she believes there is always a chance to be saved. She is later forced to reflect upon that and realises that no-one will save her. She dies, with her idealist beliefs shattered. Never achieving her goal of Mars and realising that her fate is sealed she doesn't re-enter the ship after returning, but chooses instead to die alone, looking at the goal she will never get to reach. How the heck did you miss this? Did you watch the movie with it on mute?

For me everything was perfect in the story and the fact they didnt use the same old character arc transformation trope was refreshing writing to me. My only gripe with the film is that we didnt get to see the rest of the crew make it to mars or show any kind of aftermath, it did leave me with chills though the ending that they chose :)

Only thing that made sense in this painfully long drama is the algae. A lot didn't - a man screws himself into the ceiling from the outside into a space that can fit only a pizza box, a critical life support component that has zero back up or spare, they didn't foresee a coming solar storm, etc, etc, etc.

Would be very awesome if they actually managed to survive the trip to Mars and die with the entry heat due to gravity. And we could have an out of body experience with all the characters and each revisit key moments upon the journey ( taking the idea that souls get access to the reality outside of time ) to try and change moments so they can save the alternate versions of themselves, but communication is limited and they can’t access the dimension to which they came from before dying, so the only hope is to force intuition among each other so the alternate versions would at least do things differently. And take that, they were able to tell deep information about each other when they were clinging to life before they died, so this time they try to help each other as guardian angels. It’s fun playing with the 5th dimension this way through spirituality and humanity. This could have made it more deep, and the sci-fi aspect of the movie could be the background while the drama becomes the foreground.

yes! it is outrageous that this thing is never explained. A bleeding and passed out person cannot cover himself with the panel and screw it from the outside. Everything points to him having being attacked and placed there, but why would anyone do this? None of the characters are wondering about this, this is so dumb! Why don't they have a spare CDRA part, it's really small, they could have had ten of them! Why did they consider offing Michael over climbing to the Kingfisher initially so easily and wasted 3 days? Why did no one say specifically that we cannot change the course of the ship/we don't have an escape pod? It's a very reasonable question that inevitably arises in this situation. Or the ship could halt for a bit so that a transport rocket with oxygen from Earth could reach them/take Michael back? The film takes place in a quite distant future, they should have some failsafe in case there's danger to peoples' lives. Could you imagine if Elon Musk sent austronauts into space and they would have to kill off one of them to save some oxygen? There would be a huge scandal never seen before. Why are we never shown a proper finale with the 3 survivors getting to Mars, so that there would be a real payoff for Zoe's sacrifice. The film ends abruptly, and there's no way of knowing if they all would survive. What if they are hit by space debris and explode 2 days later, or several more passed out technicians fall from the ceiling, or the ship crashes while landing? This is infuriating! The direction was so tasteful and intelligent, but the script (which the film director co-wrote with someone else) is beyond weird.

In the movie, it is explained that there is "normal" gravity at both ends of the ship. So when Zoe falls back onto the ship, she drops the cannister and it falls/drifts into space.

I think the thing people don't get about this movie is how hard they worked at realism. Apparently a good chunk of their budget went into consulting experts to get as accurate picture of how something like that would work and how would throwing in an extra person actually play out. And the fact of the matter would be that Michael wouldn't be good for much having not received the years of training the crew went through on how to use and handle the extremely sensitive and specialized equipment. You can't learn that shit on the fly. Also, although it would have made a more dramatic story if the person who chose to sacrifice themself comes to that decision in the course of the story, it's not realistic. It's more boring, but more accurate that Zoe was selected for the mission in part because she was the kind of person who had shown herself as willing to take action to help others even in perilous situations. An part of an astronaut's training involves psychological training to be able to handle close, restricted quarters for those legenths of time. If you can't handle interpersonal conflict at ALL, you don't get put in a tin can with other people for months where you can smell each other's piss.

@telectronix1368

@@AmirDarkOne Imo that short story is very badly written. Not that this film is without flaws but the main factor in the short story is "too much extra weight on the ship" which could be easily remedied by throwing out something as simple as one or two of the metal lockers on board. The ending really isn't justified. In this film at least the premise makes more sense: "not enough air" where, realistically, the solution is "use less air" (i.e. 'yeah, we really do need to have 1 less person')
@AmirDarkOne
@AmirDarkOne 3 жыл бұрын
@@telectronix1368 but you can't do that, ship is bare bone. story is about cold truth. i do agree lack of fuel was bad choice and air shortage is much more believable. my problem with movies is element of luck, Algae failing because bad luck, solar storm so conveniently happen and ruins everything (solar storm only happens once in a couple of years) so the reason someone had to died in movie is just bad luck, but in book its a cold calculation.

@@AmirDarkOne Yes the line in the story is 'no other way' but they literally have lockers on the ship (that the person was hiding in). The idea of "nope, there is just no way, there is not any object or piece of the ship, no surface etc etc...." just is not tenable (tennable ?). In this film version though the 'hard limit' is the amount of oxygen. The only solution to that is 'need less oxygen'.

I just came here to read comments and see if everyone else was equally disappointed. They were. I would love a space movie where everyone is well trained and professional, there is never a word like 'impossible' because redundancy repair equipment would have been there. I want to see the professional crew make it to their destination and begin - like Adam & Eve - to build a new world for humans. Maybe even find a planet that has other intelligent life (equal to humans) where this crew needs to become accepted. I dont want any more dystopian crap (like Mad Max) or evil Aliens or crew fighting each other (because they are well trained professionals), and most certainly no guns because no one would ever fire a gun inside a spaceship.!! There are so so many possibilities for an excellent sci-fi of space exploration that could be made, perhaps even a series.

Good points in your review. A couple of reasons I think it has to be Zoe was a) David’s comment asking her what had she sacrificed? B) let’s be real, David didn’t not go bc he had a wife, he physically wouldn’t have made it. He struggled on the first trip. I did think having the doctor on board die seemed a little strange as wouldn’t the doctor be more vital than a botanist or whatever the algae scientist is called?

When David and Michael were doing research while listening to jazz, David said: "They're generally playing together but once in a while a player or two will drift off into their own little groove." - I feel like that was foreshadowing of what was going to happen: Zoe having to "drift off" by sacrificing herself.
