What's the craziest strap you have ever seen? For me, it was a Harris Tweed Wool strap from Vario. Although as odd as that sounds, it's also strangely appealing. Vario recently released 4 new Harris Tweed straps, this time with a herringbone pattern. So today I take a closer look at two that were sent in. As usual, you will also see a whole variety of watches with these straps.

Harris tweed is clothes to wear outdoor in Scotland hunting or walking in the hills etc. Hence I think your pairing of it and a field watch is perfect.

I love the look of tweed straps with leather keepers. Kinda reminds me of a clothing choice during the fall & winter: wool classic longcoat with leather boots, looks very brittish. They would also look great with a tweed suit.

I was a 'victim' of targeted advertising on Facebook for my first exposure to Vario's products and as I'm a pretty addicted strap junkie of course I had to give them a try. I got the lavender purple Harris Tweed to try out on my black-dialed Presage (SRPC81j). I was unaware that they had come up with this new herringbone iteration and may have to go have another look! As always, fantastic content and thanks for the info and entertainment. 😊

I bought three of these over the holidays on sale from Vario for $30 and absolutely love them. I have them on a couple of vintage-looking, dress, Bulova automatics and really stepped them up over the stock leather and I have a beautiful blue (old style) for my white Seiko Presage with blue hands...pure class, I think. The 'blurred for your safety' is kind of awesome. Well done on this review. By the way, there's nothing 'scratchy' about the straps and I recommend them. I suspect that I'll use one of mine or a new one on my blue Traska Summiteer that will be delivered later this year, thanks to this video.

I love contrast between strap and watch and this takes that to another level. The watch is hard, smooth and shiny while the strap is soft, rough and absorbs light. I'm getting a few when they're back in stock.

I'm so glad you mentioned the size. I would totally go for one of the these but I have a HUGE wrist. You don't know how many times I got a strap where I can just barely get it into the last hole. Which sucks and is stupid.

I went on a trip to Scotland, and they have a lot of Harris Tweed wallets, purses, and other things would would not expect in the gift shops. It is not a cheap material. I like these watch bands, and may end up ordering one.

I have the first Vario watch they made with a peacock blue dial,it came with a blue Harris tweed strap which after about a year started showing bald spots.There appeared to be white plastic underneath.I changed it for a natty looking Nato which is blue with small white spots rather like a silk tie i have.It works really well visually when I dress myself in blue..............................................

Shane, another great video! I've wanted some of these Vario tweed straps for a long time, but I don't think they'll fit my almost 8" wrist. These new Herringbone versions are a tad bit longer than the originals. You mentioned you wear the Herringbone on the 3rd to last hole; what hole do you wear on the originals?

They need to come up with quick release spring bars for easy changeover, it is very handy especially if you have a smartwatch

The Schofield Watch Company has been making high quality straps like this for ages. I believe they make them in Britain. They also make very large watch with funky colours. They usually have a different colour leather on the underside usually in a bright colourm

I'll have to check it out. I googled wool watch straps a few times to see if anyone else had, but only Vario was coming up. You ever try them?

@@RelativeTime nobody sells them near me and they are very expensive. They mix colors were they have a British Racing Green Tweed top with Baby Pink leather underneath. They also use colour power coated hardware in great colors for some of them. Their watches look great but they have huge cases. Weird vintage Tesla 1920s designs using bright colors in cases that look like they were hammered out by a black smith.

I don't think these are my thing, but if they were, probably limited to fall/winter seasons only. Or with Birkenstocks and beards perhaps. I think there is a (very narrow) style profile where these straps can make a positive impact. I wonder how they would look on a bronze case? Great video!

I enjoyed your review of the Vario Harris Tweed Straps. I think they would be perfect in the Fall/Winter months. Looks great on your Champagne Khaki King. Speaking of the Khaki King; I’m seriously considering purchasing the exact same watch. Love the Champagne Dial/Face. I wonder if you don’t mind sharing why you chose the Khaki King over some of the other similar Hamilton models, such as the Khaki Field, etc. I know there are some cosmetic differences including the day/date versus date only, etc. Just curious what led to your decision to buy the Khaki King. Thanks for sharing your thoughts...Ed.

Thanks! So for me I focus in on the Khaki King because of the 40mm size and day date at the top. I know there are some khaki fields that are 40, but the popular ones seem to be 38. What really sold it however was the day date at the 12. I didn't have anything quite like, and I thought the extra large day at the top was much more useful then your standard seiko tiny day at the 3. The other reason I went with the khaki king was because it was a bit more nicer looking then a standard field watch. The dial finish and the hands gave it a bit more flash. Which was exactly what I was wanting so I could use it casually and pseudo dress watch when I traveled. Very rarely do I ever need a true dress watch, so I thought it would be more ideal. Sometimes I buy watches just to review, but I went into this knowing it was one I want to keep. So when I am looking at a keeper I try to get something that wouldn't have much overlap with watches I already have. Here the day date was one part of that, but the champagne color was the other. They both look great, but I already have a couple black dial watches, and I know I'll have more in the future. Yet I can't see getting a watch with that champagne color near as often. Relative Time ...Hi Shane, thanks for taking the time to provide such a detailed response to my query. I agree with all of your comments. I really think that the Khaki King can easily be worn from casual to dress, and it is more attractive than most, if not all field watches. I also find the day/date presentation to be unique and classy. Prior to our current Pandemic, I used to think that Day of week complication wasn’t quite necessary, yet finding myself housebound, like the rest of us, it’s not unusual for me to randomly forget the day of the week. Thus, I’m thinking that most people will never know that I forgot the day of week, if I were to casually look at the time on my watch, while catching a glimpse of the day and date. Finally, I hear what you are saying about black dial watches. While I only have four watches in my collection, two of them have black dials; so for me, it’s the Champagne dial as well. I’ve never seen it in person, yet every review I’ve read, suggests it looks even better in person. Shane, thanks so much for your input. I really enjoy your Channel and look forward to learning something useful as I watch one of your new productions. Thanks again, Ed...

I bought Vario Empire thanks to your review and I like it a lot (though my watchmaker had to straighten the hands for purely aesthetic reason). Unfortunately I also went for the tweed strap. It looks unique and feels fine except the keeper on the first generation. So why do I say "unfortunately"? Because in my stupidity I have forgotten I'm allergic to wool, and later ignored it hoping that since my allergy is not a big one and the amount of wool touching my skin is so small - it will not show. I was mistaken and the strap went to the drawer. Anyway my recommendation would be - GO FOR IT! [IF YOU CAN HANDLE IT...] Cheers ;-)

@@RelativeTimeNot tried HR yet, big fan of Colareb (got a alcantara in rust colour on my sarb 017 now) Absolutely, recommend Sailcloth, cordura, & Cork straps (&obviously Natos) - all decent quality available if you shop around and comparible in price to a decent leather strap for a good one. Shame these aren't Lorica backed, they've missed a trick here IMHO. Cheers mate 👍🏻

If your British you know Harris Tweed and where it belongs; with Salmon fishing and Grouse shooting. Miss Marple, along with any Brit would regard such a strap as WEIRD. It would be like wearing a gingham shirt with a tuxedo to an American.

I think everyone remembers the horrible itchy wool sweater (Jumper) we got as kids. Which has led wool to have a bad reputation in some. Yet it really is a great material with lots of great natural properties. There are reasons that even in summer outdoorsman and even cyclists prefer wool socks over synthetics.

@@RelativeTime l'm a textile technologist and wool is one of the most, if not the most wonderful natural fibres there is, in it's place. How itchy wool is depends on the coarseness of the fibre, which depends on the breed and age of the sheep and from which part of the sheep's body it comes from. Also whether it's had any chemical treatment to make the fibres smoother, such as superwash wool. Harris Tweed is made from very coarse fibres and is woven to different weights of cloth to make it windproof, thornproof and hard-wearing. Not really what you require from a watchstrap.

I feel like that is the type of gift my grandmother would have bought me for a birthday 40 years ago. As long as it was durable, nothing else mattered to her. That really has to be one of the least attractive band I’ve ever seen. I imagine my Malamutes hair would love it though.

I'm 62 and I've had at least one Harris Tweed jacket in my wardrobe for 40 years, but this is bordering on bonkers. It's impractical for this type of use; are you going to dryclean it? You're going to have to adjust your whole outfit to wear it. What next? A rabbit fur strap?

I'm not sure about Harris Tweed specifically, but I would think wool as a whole is pretty good. Even in summer hikers and cyclists prefer thin wool socks over synthetics. Mostly because they are very moisture whicking and breathable. So it's more a question if you want something a bit crazy, on your wrist. Rather than just a nice piece of leather. Although good questions on how to care for one of these, I'll have to look into that.
