Bogged down with go-nowhere alternate picking exercises? Well this isn't your bog standard "alternate picking lesson for guitar." How about taking a legato lesson and putting it into and alternate picking lesson? So many people who have tried to do alternate have run into the age old issue of string crossing. We've all wanted to know just how we can be Picking Faster. Noah Walker S.L.A.P. [Strategic Legato Alternate Picking ] method makes it easy.
Most of us know Guitarist Troy Grady who has devoted much of his endeavors into figuring out how the masters do it. Many of us including Noah have looked to the work of Troy Grady as in inspiration in hopes that we too will be able to add his discoveries to our repertoire.
Guitar educator Noah Walker tried in earnest to try to get his alternate picking to a higher level and in doing so I happened upon this particular approach. I thought it was a remarkable solution and I felt I wanted to share it with my audience. Much respect to Noah! I will leave a link to his video too, so you can view his official unveiling.

@@streetwiseguitar5113 Am already a follower! What surprises me: Noah has no problem with the actually difficult inside-picking, but does S.L.A.P. before the actually easier outside-picking!

I LOVE this episode! It's not about shred in particular - it's a QUEST to unlock the mysteries that the guitar has hidden away. Geeking out on technique is one of my favourite hobbies.

That's cool, I used to do this all the time, in fact, kind of a hybridized approach, it works! ... (pick companies gonna hate me now), but I find using a modified picado seems to not only be more accurate, but also cleaner sounding and faster...

Find it pretty cool that Josh meader essentially does this too, doesn't seem as formalized with him though
@streetwiseguitar5113

Well this one’s a hard one to respond to because what Josh does is actually different 50% of the time. So because of that, it’s enough to have a noticeable aesthetic difference. I took a lesson with Josh For the explicit reason of finding out what he does and he has quite a methodical approach to teaching how to get his picking technique learned. I would suggest trying a lesson with him if you’re seriously interested in going down that rabbit hole! Thanks a lot for watching the video I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it!

@@streetwiseguitar5113 The main difference is the picking motion and its trajectory. Noah is doing an upstroke escape motion, smiliar to Eric Johnson. What that technique does well are upstroke string changes and ascending economy picking. That's why he replaces downstroke string changes with legato. Yngwie is also an upstroke escape player, he does the same when playing descending harmonic minor that alternates between 4 and 3 notes per string. Four notes are D U D U, three notes are D U P.O. - the last picked note on a string is always an upstroke. Here's an example of the same approach by Marty Friedman, another upstroke escape player. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7OIiNCUsM6ycYU.html Slow it down in youtube player to 0.25x. He starts on an upstroke, 3 notes on the high E string - U D U, the last note is an upstroke, next 3 notes on the B string - D U P.O., so the last picked note is an up again. Then 2 notes on the G string, D U, again the last picked note is an upstroke. Then he plays typical 3 nps fingerings on D, A and E strings, D U P.O.. It's about replacing picking with legato when you're about to do a string change that your fundamental picking motion doesn't solve. That's why Noah's system will work only for upstroke escape players. I recall that Josh does the reverse (U D Hammer) when ascending and economy picking when descending, that's a typical downstroke escape approach. You need the last note on a string to be a down, escpecially when ascending, descending can be solved through economy picking.

great idea I've been playing like that for years and I thought it was a "false" technique like cheating, now I see many guitarists play like that, the only question is in your particular case how do you use legato when you have the pick in a favorable position for an outside picking? and you use it when you stay inside, for most it is the most disadvantaged position? is for the angle position right?
@satchrules101

Great vid .. but I’m having a hard time understanding the slap technique, if he is using the motion of a down stroke why not just pick the note and use the wrist to get the up stroke ?
@streetwiseguitar5113
@streetwiseguitar5113 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a fantastic question! The main reason is that it’s the transition from one string to the next that most people struggle with. So he is bypassing that. The reason to keep your wrist moving is so your hand can stay in rhythm/time and you’re not starting from a “zero motion“ point. Thank you again for watching the video! By doing so you help this channel stay alive!

hmm, I don't have any issue playing the major Segovia scale (2notes, 3notes, 3notes) cleanly at shred speeds with every note alternate picked. I've not done an analysis of my picking technique, all I can tell you is that I pick mostly from my wrist, closed fist, with a tiny bit of movement in the thumb. Maybe someone can point me in the direction of how to analyze it because my technique works almost all lines I can think of, in the context of my playing (I'm a bebop and classical player fyi)
@willmurphy8650
@willmurphy8650 2 жыл бұрын
But this style seems useful for lines that may be impossible to play cleanly alternate picked

Why nobody talks about improvisation when they are dealing with this techniques? It's all about licks! I'm not interested in learning a phrase that I have to play the same way always. As I was taught, I want to be able to learn a lick and create 500 variations of it, and with this techniques this is impossible/impractical. I prefer to play slower but being able to improvise. Of course my influences show through my playing but... it's different.
@streetwiseguitar5113
@streetwiseguitar5113 2 жыл бұрын
You have a few good points there the Leandro ! I can tell you, as an economy picker… I was concerned about the fact that the left hand has to be in a certain pattern to make the stuff work. What I have found over my many years of trying to find something that fits is that there isn’t one technique that allows you to do absolutely everything. Many times people have to learn just one phrase and try and apply a new picking technique. That way they can focus entirely on the new scale without putting pressure on having to improv the same time. I did make a video about how I think finger exercises are bullshit. I think you might find that one interesting? At any rate I hope you enjoyed the video nonetheless it was great having your input !

@@streetwiseguitar5113 Thank you very much for your response. Yes, of course I liked the video. I have been watching some of your videos and they are all interesting with great players, like you as well . That issue that I pointed is kind of a dilemma for me. I know that for example John Mclaughlin certainly improvises and according to Troy Grady he uses the upward pickslanting technique. Well... This is just a small dilemma :p I am almost certain that this techniques aren't for me. I think I will always mix mostly legato (mainly when I play faster) with regular alternate picking as I feel is appropriate or I am able to do in the moment :) I have subscribed your channel for some time now and I will keep it like that. Keep up the good work.
