If you want to contain your plants to a limited area and to a limited number of plants then cut runners. However, I see runners as beneficial with no real negative effect on overall plant health or productivity and never cut them off. On my homestead I have between 150,000 and 200,000 strawberry plants and my u-pick customers tell me my berry plants are the best they have seen on any farm.

Can you not create new plants from the runners? In which case what would you do? My plants aren’t flowering or fruiting it’s past the season now in the Uk, but they are growing these runners and id like more plants.

with strawberries, if youre using a high nitrogen based nutrient or potting mix it will shoot out runners. If you want them to stop the runners then ease right back on the nitrogen..

So runners always sprout from the ground and run horizontally...how do new sets of leaves look? Im curious because I want to trim my strawberries before the energy gets wasted on long runners. I guess just wait for them to form before making the cut?

Do you need more strawberry plants or more strawberries? If you need more strawberries, cut off runners. If you need more plants (over $5.00 in Bunnings per plant), then reduce number of flowers. As simple as that. I could only afford 3 plants, so I let runners go wild this year. Once I have enough plants I will cut runners off. No ultimate good/bad solution. Just solutions for different problems

You need the runners to make new strawberries. How much "energy" did the runners take? 5%? 10%? You don't know. Everyone is talking about how much "energy" flowers or runners take but no one really says how much exactly. Sorry but it's urban legends.

I have to agree. How would strawberries grow if left? They’d just die?
@HideorEscape
@HideorEscape 2 жыл бұрын
How much energy they have depends on the sun and water. With a lot of sunlight and watering they have more than enough. Especially when you see dark green leafs on the strawberry plant that's how you know that they are very healthy. Runners should be put in small pots to make more strawberry plants. If the strawberry is planted in rich black soil and already flowered and made fruits then I don't think that runners consume a lot of energy. You know what consumes energy? Damaged, diseased or pale leafs that don't get sunlight consume energy. I usually just pull them off from the strawberry plant's crown and it will grow new healthy leafs along with new runners.
@Mountainrock70
@Mountainrock70 Жыл бұрын
I keep the runners and water with fish emulsion at half strength every 3rd watering or once a week. Then every month a higher ratio organic liquid fertilizer is used. Feeding is key. Lots of runners is lots of new plants. Feeding the plants often means lots of big berries. I also flush the soil well with pure water once a month.

Question!!! If I want to propagate my runners, do I leave them attached to the original plant till they root Or do I remove them, THEN plant them?
@homefarmideas
@homefarmideas 9 жыл бұрын
Zach Johnson, great question:) Well, if we are talking soil you want to leave them attached to the original plant till they root. If you have an aquaponic (AP) system you can cut the runners off and put them into the water and they will root! My friends Panda Bennett and her husband Ralph just made a video on rooting runners in there AP system. I am building a system now and making videos as I go! Check out there video here and sub there channel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLWjdZebltDJfKc.html

Healthy plants can put out anywhere from .5 to 1.5 pounds per foot of strawberry plant but it really depends on the type of strawberry plant and the over all health of the plant. You want to get a loamy slightly acidic soil for strawberries:) Have fun growing them!! @@homefarmideas look for a Felco 4, if you are not a southpaw, they are just awesome, and go up from there, look online, not that expensive, and are so easy to sharpen, take apart, lube, etc, I always can tell who is a true mechanic , carpenter by their tools, good tools make it quicker, easier, safer. When I had my commercial orchard we had electric backpack pruners, cut up to a 3/4 like butter, wore mesh gloves, as they are just that quick, but our summer pruning, was all done with good pruners, all bypass, and loppers. Even the grafting took special tools, success was noticeable, just like bypass, less damage and dieback, less disease homes.
