As a small streamer myself, I honestly agree with everything your saying. I have 70 followers currently on twitch and anytime I stream I usually have maybe 1-3 viewers if I'm lucky and sometimes I may peak to maybe 5, but I quickly go back down to 1. Ngl having the low viewership is discouraging for me, but I don't wanna let that stop me from doing something that enjoy which playing video games and showing off my skills. So definitely take everything you say into consideration. I've actually been thinking about trying to use youtube as a way to help with my growth, but I'm just not good with editing, but I definitely wanna try. Thank you for your wisdom and great advice.

It definitely wasn't harsh, these are comments people do need to hear. I've had to take a break from streaming due to work and life. However I'm planning to return in June and I am already planning stuff out, so I can be more discoverable. I tried growing as a variety streamer and it didn't work and I've learned that the hard way. Because all I was burn my self out.

Well said! I streamed one of my videos, with the mindset that I would later take it and make a video out of it. It was a 15 hour stream in total, and I averaged 1 viewer (which was my friend). I took that video, edited it down to a digestible 10 minute video and now it sits at around 400k viewers. I don't even stream on twitch anymore, I switched to KZfaq pretty quickly lol.

I've been really losing the drive to create content and keep a regular schedule on my stream. Hearing the things you had to say here was kind of the swift kick I needed to get my head straight and dive back into it. Keep doing what you're doing! It's honestly helping so many get the most out of their time striving to become discovered! Thank you.

Great video! What attracts me to a streamer: Family-friendly content, relaxing environment and/or gameplay (one guy I follow makes donuts in his bakery at night!), and the streamer's willingness to engage with their viewers. That's what I put into my own because that's what keeps me coming back to theirs.

I'm a small streamer myself. Even if this advice just seemed like common sense I completely didn't realize how entertaining my streams actually have to be. I sat down after what you said and tried breaking down what makes my content good or entertaining to a live viewer. All I came up with was.. I'm wholesome sometimes, engage with chat, and wait for something random to happen in hopes of it being funny or something to talk about. All my yt shorts and tiktok videos are all based off of those random moments. Relying on something random comes back as random in consistency.. You cannot predict random and cannot completely rely on random events. Not only do I rely on random.. I also pretty much only play Valorant or Overwatch which both games are full of streamers already. Its very very competitive and hard to find ppl on through categories and even if you look through the least viewed streams.. There are just so many the chances of finding me are very very slim.. I've branched out to yt shorts and tiktok, but still very hard to grow if I can't find the content people want to watch and are willing to use their time watching longer then 5 minutes. I will get better through everything I learn and everything I work on changing to become more entertaining. But now I see why I'm not as successful as my piers. Thank you, Stream Scheme

"it's better to try and fail" This is my thoughts exactly. Idk why but I feel like there's less "regret" (maybe there's a better word) when you've at least tried. If you don't even try, you'll never know if you could've succeeded...and that just feels so much worse, and I speak from experience of never having the guts to ask my parents for acting or singing lessons when I was younger and - to this day, I still wonder how it would've gone if I had actually asked for them. It's why I just freaking went for it when I decided that I wanted to start streaming the games I play...and they were surprisingly encouraging.

I know everyone has there own style that comes naturally to them, but what I found worked for me when I was very small was I spent a decent amount of time not streaming, but on twitch in other small community streamer channels that I loved. The relationships with them and communities grew from there. Don't underestimate the power of other smol beans like you ☺️

Great advice! I am at the beginning of changing my mindset to treat my streams like recording sessions for videos and shorts, and also to plan some challenge/event based streams that can translate to KZfaq well! e.g. If I can't do X then I have to do Y. Keep the videos coming in the mean time!

I started streaming in 2015 or so. For 5 years my channel didn't grow much, about 125 followers. But when around 2020 I got the idea to talk a bit about my twitch on KZfaq (where I was starting to get a little bit of people, around 10K) and it was a winner: I know I have a very good reading level so I started doing morning reads of LOTR and games that were "Lord of the Rings" themed with the hype that was building around the Amazon series, I quickly grew and as I write, I'm approaching 700 followers on Twitch! Your advices are pure gold! I might just add: make a clear and precise program that you stick to and share it on your socials ;)

100% agree with everything you've said here (and in a crap load of other vids of yours I've recently watched). That said, I'm only streaming and making (minimal) content for fun, not to make money or become popular. I have a fulltime job as an IT contractor that pays extremely well and streaming etc is really just a nice way for me to relax (and waste a lot of money on gear I don't really need lol). I enjoy casual gaming and I honestly don't care if I have 1 or 1000 viewers. If someone finds me interesting or sees something in one of my streams/vids that helps them in a particular game, that's great. If they don't, then so be it.

I know this was uploaded literally 9 months ago, but something I've found true (reference point at about 4:35 in video), is that "mediocre" gameplay is one of the best possible scenarios for gameplay skill. The reason being that it's relatable to the audience and often, hilarious, unintended things happen as a result. Never let being "bad" at a game hold you back. People LOVE that stuff.

What I can say with a small stream channel on twitch myself on what helped me is this. I’ll start with I have 79 followers averaging around right now 5-10 peaking around 15 viewers which is good for a small streamer. What I did to help grow was simply start sharing my twitch links when I stream in discord servers I’m in as friends, or random people who roam the server will join and and usually support you. I also made a tik tok for my twitch where I would make quick 30 second edited clips from my stream and post it for people to watch and help gain more publicity. Also keep streaming as being a small streamer you just need to keep consistency and don’t be discouraged as everyone starts somewhere. Note: also figure out what you enjoy playing and what genre attracts the most people. For me I like playing action so Apex and Val when I play is about 5-8 viewers. But horror is something I sorta enjoy and my viewers like watching me get scared so I get 10-15. Hope this helps

I don't really have any streamers I look up to at the moment other than my friend who just got his first sponsor. Listening to your video made me think on how to use the fact that I'm often the lore nerd for anything I'm into and how I can incorporate that into my streams. I'm playing through Dragon Age atm which is one I know a lot about so I'm mostly explaining in world stuff and what things are going to change between the first and the rest. I also plan to explain the novels and comics when they occur chronologically. Your video has made me feel a bit more confident in embracing my lore nerdy self and let it out more in stream.

Every time you say you're being harsh, I'm seeing you A. Showing us the tools to help us and B. Telling us how to fix things. What I consider to be harsh is saying "Well you just kinda suck" and leaving it at that. I always appreciate your videos and advice Eljay. Back when I started streaming, it was clearly to make a job out of playing games, and to a degree yeah its still something id like to do. But Last year I started making YT content(COD Warzone since it was what I was playing), and it wasnt until the 3rd video that I started finding the flow I wanted and realized how to make my content different from others, and you know what that was: Editing. Something I had done very little of before, but now im quite confident, and I realize I actually enjoy it as much, if not more than streaming. I like more longform videos so that makes it difficult to edit shorts / tiktoks in between, but ive made the odd ones here and there, but mainly I keep pushing myself to learn more editing techniques, to improve each video in one way or another, heck the one im working on next is the most intricate ive done to date because of stuff ive learned. So in the end, I found another passion I never knew I had, and while I love streaming (And yes im actually putting your advice to work) I cant help but love editing YT videos more, especially so I can put stupid little jokes in that make me laugh.

Agreed. This is a burner but I grew so much when posting on other platforms but personal life got in the way and after that I grew lazy. I genuinely enjoy making content and aim to get back on it!!! Appreciate these videos. I guess the hard part is starting. Like you said, someone just sitting in their room playing games isn't hard, it's the effort in trying to be different and entertaining for viewers to be worth watching. However, for a lot of us small streamers it's hard because that's all we have access too, it's a part of the growth so I guess that's where it's hard because you want to be entertaining but don't access to the tools to help and if no one cares to watch how will you ever hope to grow if the service isn't sustaining itself. Understand what I'm saying? It's a hard balance in the very beginning and why a lot of small channels fail cause it's not sustaining for them to grow its why viewers and engaging your community is important to any channel. Guess the key is consistency, you'll get demotivated, you'll want to give up but just hang in there one day you can put more resources into growing the brand and expanding the content.

I have 3 questions: 1) I know you mentioned I got to be entertaining even at 0 viewers, but How do you vocally do this without anyone? You tell stories and stories hoping one person pops in and laugh? or do you just say what's happening in the game. 2) I have some ideas for content and challenges that MIGHT not be what people are looking for. Should I still aim try to make it? I think it's interesting, I just don't know if someone will actually search for that challenge. 3) Is the niching down on one single game actually worth it if I got other ideas for other games? For example, I try BotW, which botw I'm hardly getting growth, but I have an idea for the new kirby game. My doubt is, is it bad to put out BotW content and then kirby? then go to pokemon and zelda again?

This advice feels very familiar to the advice I give folks who wanna do art and look at my stuff like "Dang you draw really well, I'll never draw that good." Like, I didn't get my skills overnight. You just gotta keep making interesting art content and keep trying to give it your best quality. It takes time to get really good at these things. So A+ on this video's advice. It's all about putting in the effort and sticking to it.

The last part kinda hurt, because I felt like I'm being told that I don't care about my viewers and also makes me feel like I'm not doing enough when I'm doing so much that I've started neglecting people around me.

Hi Eljay! I recently found your content and have been watching a lot of your videos for advice as I'm going to start streaming soon, and I've been finding it very helpful. However, there is one thing I haven't been able to find any advice on, not just from you but from anyone. I've been able to find videos and advice on what you should do BEFORE you start streaming, but not what you should do ON your first stream. I've never seen anyone's first stream before (except for VTubers but they have a very specific way of doing a first stream that I don't think applies to the normal streamer population) but I think it would feel awkward to introduce myself briefly and immediately jump right into content. If you (or anyone else reading this comment) have any advice, I would appreciate it!

Treating streams as a recording session a few months back changed my mindset drastically. I only get 5-10 viewers on streams usually, but I'm up to almost 6000 followers on TikTok and there's been some of them slowly moving to YT and Twitch. I'm about to start streaming challenge runs to have interesting YT videos but until then - it's easy enough to get 1-3 clips for TikTok a day. Just gotta be consistent and purposeful.

Eljay! I just wanted to say, I did my very first stream last night, and it went amazing! I gained my first 15 followers, averaged 7 viewers, and even got my first raid! I took a lot of your advice to heart, and people were even saying it was one of the least scuffed first streams they've seen! (Uh, I did totally manage to forget to increase the font size for the chat box 1🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️) but other than that, your videos and tips have really helped me so far, so thank you so muxh for your wonderful tips, tutorials, etc!

Three major inspos right now: Mori Calliope (huge music talent and punished gamer) Selen Tastuki (nickanamed "chuckle dragon") Yuuka Bear (hilarious commentary, amazing voice skills) All different sizes, all different styles, but they're each so good at engaging their viewers in their own way. They also make a lot of cool stuff besides streaming- I myself have recently grown from 0 to nearly 500 subs on YT, and the huge majority of that has been from video essays, youtube shorts, and (most recently) tiktok stuff. Also since I started focusing on specific games, namely Omori, Animal Crossing and Genshin, it seems like more people come by and stick around to see where things go! I need to get better at asking mundane questions that get people interested in chatting without feeling put on the spot. Also... I've been taking guitar and voice coaching lessons, and wanna start adding music to my streams, but man I'm kind of nervous to start with that! I'm a baby beginner. But I'm proud of how many ways I've expanded over the past year!

I could do with some help on TikTok/YT Shorts. I tried a few videos, which I editing on my PC. I wholly accept, that I need to be more prolific, but those videos I did went nowhere. I was later told, that TikTok, especially, only really wanted videos from mobile phones, yet I see some rather well edited videos that could only really have been done on computers - do they transfer them to a phone to upload, then add sounds? You can't seem to upload it from a PC and use all the cool stuff the app provides. I have uploaded stuff with the same tags as other videos that have many may more views than mine, and it goes no where. Something around tiktok especially would be of assistance to me.

Solid point . As a twitch viewer i havent actually browsed a category in about 2 years now . Alot of the time i feel fortunate for even growing at all as a twitch streamer when i think of how i am as a viewer and that many might be just like me lol Granted in the past couple years ive done alot more content on youtube than twitch but still ... the reality is browsing the categories is a pain because theres just way too many streamers and more so , small streamers . its easier to just follow those u find that u like along the way and resort to your followed list

"Stop making excuses" is so important. I've been actively trying to call myself out and get back into content creation but I keep coming up with new reasons that I'm too unprepared. It's been a long period of watching ideas come and never come to fruition relating to trends that could really pick up my channels, all because I keep thinking I'm not ready.

Eljay I just want thank you for the awesome advice! I've been afraid to even touch tiktok, but my little community has been clipping some funny horror moments so I'll start with those. I'm having so much fun streaming and can already see improvement from weeks ago by following your advice, and just being myself!

I’ve been wanting to go from a guide KZfaqr to an actual entertaining KZfaqr and streamer for a long time. Knowing Smallant and those like him, they really set me on the right path to what I want to make. Even though my game (Genshin Impact) has an extremely defined meta when it comes to content. I’d really like to make all my content actually interesting to watch by doing these challenges instead of having reaction and playthroughs alone.

I don't personally stream, but my favorite streamer is Sim_Play_Loraine. She streams sims content, although right now we are all obsessed with the new Disney Dreamlight Valley game!! The thing I love about her streams, and what keeps me coming back, is the amount of chaos we are allowed to do during her streams! She eats Bean Boozles, Spicy chips, She has it where we can stop her current gameplay and she has to do solo Phasmo for a certain amount of time. She has now gotten some extremely spicy gummies and suckers (the sucker dares you to suck on it for 5 minutes!!) All these things keep me coming back to watch her!!!

As a small streamer I tend to spend a lot of time planning what are we going to do on stream and try to balance my passion of art and gaming, sometimes even making fanarts of the games we play. I used to edit the footages to upload them on KZfaq but I got a bit discouraged after feeling like nobody was watching either the speedpaints, the vods or the compilations, as if neither of these work. I want to get a written schedule so people will know better what to expect from me and when, as discoverability is also very difficult for me. I always make the excuse that I don't have time to make KZfaq videos while working full-time as well as streaming but I've been stuck in that mindset that it needs to be HYPER polished before it goes out good to see that if the content is engaging enough it can still do well!

I tend to often agree with you, so I'd say good job with your videos. You're right, most of people just make excuses. It's true that some content needs viewers (like pointcrow's video) to do anything at all but just start with something else interesting that doesn't need them. Once you get enough viewers, playing with them is an awesome idea!

Great video, as always, Eljay! How do you deal with second-guessing yourself? Let me explain. I struggle with seeing cool video/stream ideas, saying "this could make for a great vid," but stopping myself from doing it just because other streamers have already done it. Am I in the right by stopping myself from doing content others have already done, or should I push through and make it my own?

I'm a small streamer and I try to make my content entertaining and I genuinly am happy for every little chatter that takes time out of their day to have a conversation with me. I got some pretty layouts, I make sure my background never looks dull or distracting, I made a discord that also notifies people when i get live. I have barely 90 followers, and thats fine. I dont expect me to skyrocket into fame. But an associate of mine has started twitch recently also, where as i started over a year ago, and he already has over 50 followers, became affiliate at the same time I did. He doesn't do anything special, I don't want to put him down or anything, but it's kind of disappointing to see someone else do so much better with so much less effort I won't be bitter about it or stop what I'm doing, but I just wonder how twitch works that way

Making reason why I stream is cause it helps my depression alot, and one thing I need to do is stop thinking nobody will watch me and start to realize just stream and enjoy yourself I stream about 2-12 hrs depends on how I feel but mostly just do 2-3 hrs fasho

I have literally been binging your content for the past few days even before my first stream on last friday and all your tips have had such high value. I'm still a bit unsure about a lot of things, like people telling you all the time "Don't be a variety streamer, focus on one game only" and I wonder if I can still play two games, I wonder if my game I chose is too oversatured with 12-22k viewers (Genshin Impact) and so on and on. And while I still have all those worries, there's a bunch of stuff I still learned from the binge. I made sure that my titles are engaging, I've thought about a couple play of words and jokes from the game as titles for the next streams, things that make people click on me out of all these. According to friends who've been into streaming a while the numbers for my two streams are pretty well, but to grow a community is the hard way. And the most important thing I learned, from anyone stopping by who may see my comment: turn of the view count. During my first stream I was pretty hyped and I didn't see the view count, cause I didn't see my own stream and forgot to open the twitch app on my phone. When I saw I had 8 viewers I was hyped. Yea, 3 of them were my friends but there were still 5 strangers watchng my stuff that's awesome! Midway through the stream it dropped down to 3, once we even had only 2 which were literally two of my 3 friends mentioned earlier. I got so upset and I tried to mask, but ofc it was discouraging. The same happened on my other stream yesterday. First I was upset that the max I "only" got were 5 people and the other half of the stream were 3-4 with a very quiet chat in comparison to friday, so I got super selfconcious. I had improved my audio, my layout, everything - why were there less people? Ever since then I told myself to not look at it, because I feel like the moment I had figured out how to see your view count, I was doomed. I was happy, excited, streaming like this is what I do every day until I saw this 2. Don't look! It doesn't matter. :)

So I want to start streaming, but don't know how. I want to do a unique channel on Twitch where it's primarily horror focused reaction content and occasional gaming. I'm going to watch your videos so I can get the best tips possible. I'm gonna be honest, I'm not confident in myself as far as my ability to make interesting content, but I'm sure as hell gonna try! This is really helpful! I'm a new streamer myself, believe it or not, and am constantly trying to think of ways to make people actually want to engage with chat and myself, ways to entertain viewers, etc. It's a grind but things are starting to pick up!

I don't typically listen to the "like and comment" spiel that most content creators put out there, but this is something I'll actually do that on, the advice is solid and I want to take it to heart. I have an active streaming schedule, but you're absolutely right, I don't put forth the effort to make shorts to help advertise my stream when whacky shit happens, all I do is play the fucking game with my dry ass commentary and then reupload the stream on KZfaq. I don't consider myself interesting or funny in the goddamn slightest, unfortunately. I WANT to be funny and entertaining, just a dumbass lmao. But yeah, you're right, that's probably just a mental excuse I'm using to avoid attempting to make shorts and the like. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the video.

These are really nice tips. I just want to have around an average of 5 to 10 people watching. streaming is so much more fun when you can talk with your chat and I would enjoy streaming so much more if i knew I wasnt just talking to myself. As long as one person is watching, then I dont feel like im wasting my time

being a small streamer and starting out is hard. I edit everything myself because I won't pay so much someone else and i'm learning everything slowly From the mic issues (to buying a new mic) to the editing errors and mishaps, its a fun journey.

most of the time I stream a game that is more popular in english (although at maximum there's like another 3 or 4 people streaming it), but Im a portuguese speaker so it's kinda hard for english speakers to check my content hahaha nonetheless on my "about me" section I actually put that I can speak in english as well and sometimes some come and speak to me (it's funny tho hahah)

I've been honestly trying my best to make stuff like shorts, but it's always so tiring to go through entire streams to find the cool moments, just because I have such a bad memory. As well asmy love-hate relationship with streaming, that definitely doesn't make the shorts strategy easy. I do always try to interact with chat, even if there's like 1 person watching, because if it's one person you still have to appreciate they're there with you!

im a small streamer and i didnt thougt this would help me as much, i thouged i aleardy knew everything you were going to say but i thing this is gonna help me alot i try to uplode on tik tok as much as i can ( wich is not much) but i always forget that i can just uplode stream clip where the mostly about 200 viewers then also acully see how i am in a stream especially right now where i feel like im starting to find what i like and how my streams do best im now gonna go and make a few tik toks and youtube shorts with clips from my stream this video help a alot more the i thougt :D (sorry about the spelling in some words)

Very good video! I don't think any of what you said is necessarily wrong, but I'm not sure how it's useful or applicable to me. I'm a small channel and I have had limited success gaining follows by sharing a link in games. My most recent stream on KZfaq was a 5 hr long Overwatch 2 Support placements video. I didn't really have viewers and if I did it was for short moments but I was giving commentary. I get really anxious if I focus too hard on the commentary and get a form of writers block, so for me I try to focus on the game and let the commentary come on it's own. I have recently started making myself only read comments in-between games and at the end of the stream and that is helping me organize myself as well. I appreciate any tips or advice I can get but I understand ultimately it will come down to me and the work I am willing to put into it. I am trying to figure out social networking and better ways to advertise streams as advertising in game usually gains me about 1-2 subscribers per stream.
