Adding a charging system, headlight, brake light and a horn to a 250 two-stroke kickstart motorcycle like this YZ250 X to make it street legal is a big task. It may seem easier to get one of those Dual Sport kits to get it on the road. In reality, if you have a little wiring experience, it might be better to just build your own lightweight and simpler kit to get your bike on the road and night riding worthy.
Part 2 (THIS VIDEO) will be about creating a minimalist system that has just a head/tail/brake light and a horn with a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a custom wiring harness.
Part 1 ( • Street Legal Yamaha YZ... ) explains the scenario when you are using a Tusk or Baja Designs dual sport kit and also talks all about how to add a rewound stator, a battery and a voltage regulator/rectifier.
Whether its a 250cc two-stroke race bike like this 2019 Yamaha YZ 250 X, or four-stroke MX bike like a CRF, KX, YZ250/450F that doesn't have a light or strong enough charging system, for most bikes you can still get all of the functionality you need get a road-worthy inspection from your local PD or highway patrol after you have addressed the charging system and a battery. From there just get power to your lighting, wire a brake light switch, get some DOT tires and make sure your front brake line still works. Oh, and put on a little stupid mirror.
