In episode two of SHOW & TELL, Diane Arbus and the Jewish Giant, writer and photographer Stephen Leslie looks at one of his favourite photos by Diane (he knows it shuld actually be pronounced Deeann) Arbus and uses this as a springboard to discuss topics as varied as Donald Trump and cultural vandalism, Nicole Kidman, full body waxing and giants. Obviously.
Taking in photographs by Arbus, Weegee, Louis Faurer (again), Lizette Model and others this episode is a funny, insightful and often heart-felt look at a fantastic, iconic photograph.
Please subscribe to the channel and Stephen will do more of these as he seeks to focus on photography content and not just which new or old camera to buy.
For more of Stephen's photography please visit his website: www.stephenleslie.co.uk/ or his Instagram: / step_hen_le. . or sign up for the mailing list for his new book, MOSTLY FALSE REPORTS: tinyurl.com/6uyy3vsf

Thank you for bringing your perspective to Arbuses work. I too hear so often that people consider her work to be cruel and exploitative but I couldn't disagree more with that sentiment. I often find that those who don't photograph don't quite seem to get it.

such a treasure. love the purpose for the channel. there are a couple podcasts which I know of that deal with photographers rather than gear and they are good, but limited by being only audio and necessarily interviewing living photographers. You manage to stay on track by jumping around by digressing, but it works brilliantly. Ive read Patricia Bosworth's book, I have 2 early Arbus books and have seen an Arbus exhibit in Toronto, all of it brilliant. This episode of Show and Tell was scholarly in scope. I don't mean to gush and embarrass you but your effort needs to be applauded. Leave it that, except yeah, who really gives a shit about bokeh. Pixel Perfect gear heads perhaps.

@@stephenlesliephoto I was just...as you Brits say...'taking the piss?' or as we say in Brooklyn, 'breaking your balls.' I think I was triggered because when I first learned her name was pronounced Dee-Ann I was savaged by my friends as a pretentious ponce just because I was PRONOUNCING IT CORRECTLY. So keep on keeping on, my good man. Looking forward to whatever you do next. You're not just an antidote to gear sites, but also (if you haven't seen them...good on you...) for those video series that DO try and analyze great photographs but are either frustrated academics (cough- the Art of Photography-cough) or twenty-somethings who feel that their incredible insights ("I've discovered this incredible photographer named Elliott Erwitt and now I'm going to tell YOU all about him!") deserve a 45 minute video. And I promise this is my last reply.

I did this, but it's not something you usually want to do when watching professional videos. Moreover, the public you address is international so a little, just a little delay won't hurt. Take it as a mere subjective constructive opinion, not a criticism. I like what you did and watched it with interest.

Can we make a video about WTF “Street Photography” actually means and where it came from? At this point it can mean so many things it’s meaningless to me. Pretty much anyone who takes a photo outside of anything is a “street photographer”. I’m sure Cartier Bresson didn’t say “I am a street photographer”. So who started using this term?
@stephenlesliephoto
@stephenlesliephoto Жыл бұрын
It is a lazy term but, unfortunately it's also useful. I prefer spontaneous photography but I don't think there's a phrase that will please everyone. I can try and find out but it might take a while.....
@carlosmcse
@carlosmcse Жыл бұрын
@@stephenlesliephoto I think basically it means any photo outside can be street photography. A guy who calls himself a “street photographer” goes out and takes photos of people at a protest holding signs screaming whatever. That’s street photography. Now there’s a guy next to him who works for the LA Times. He’s taking the same photos. Now it’s photo journalism. I take a picture of you smoking sitting and drinking coffee it’s a portrait. Now, if I put that table outside in front of a restaurant now it’s “street photography”. Seems like street photography can be anything. And something that’s anything is nothing. Silly term. I mean it doesn’t matter in the end, I’ve just been thinking about it lately. I guess it’s easy and everyone now calls themselves a “street photographer”. Helps with the hustle. - Join me in my street photography workshop. I’ll show you all the secrets. $300 per person. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s a marketable thing I guess.
