Episode 5 of SHOW & TELL is a little bit different, plagued by a lack of time, grumpy, bald writer and photographer Stephen Leslie asks everyone to be patient with him and seeks to calm things down with a very short story.
Next week's episode will be another huge exploration of some aspect of photography or another, think of this weeks as a little spa break for your mind. Or the visual equivalent of a quick muffin. Or something.

Know this photo from your instagram, and you are right that this classic deserves more than the short and casual glance on a small screen that most IG photos get. It also is strong enough to move out from its creator and be interpreted by others. But it’s difficult to let your children go, isn’t it. Your story made me smile, though!

So you KNEW I had to say something. I am NOT a professional photographer, so I can only admire your skill there, but I have made my living as a writer (yes, I don't just write comments) for quite some time and found your story worked with the picture in a lovely and surprising way. I could make some Freudian comment about the juxtaposition of your son being still at home and clearly driving you a little batty with a story ending with a woman threatening to stab a chopstick into someone's face repeatedly, but hey, we've all been there, haven't we? Keep it up and as always, looking forward to the next one. And once this channel really takes off (which if the world was fair, it should have by now, but we both know the world is not) remember those of us who signed on early.

@@stephenlesliephoto For the record...I knew the story was written before, I was just amused that this was the one you PICKED to read...unless all your stories end with someone being stabbed in the face with a blunt chopstick. Which actually could be kind of cool. "We sipped our wine, and I'd never felt happier in my life. And that's when she stabbed me in the face with a blunt chopstick."

Jiufen was a coal mining town back in the day. If she'd grown up there she would have seen some desperate times, and probably lost at least a few family members to that industry even as it was in steep decline. That said, it's not difficult or even expensive to have such a view, if you're willing to endure a long commute up those winding roads and a long drive to or from the city.

Awesome Stephen!! Very cool. I am glad to let you know I've got my copy of your book "Sparks" I founded in Ebay and I am excited to read it. I was trying to wait until I finish another book I am currently reading but could not resist. I really like the fact that it is short stories based on the photographs so it is easy to read while reading other books. Well done man, I love your creativity and overall concept. I have started to review my own photographs and attempting to, inspired by you, create short poems or stories. Both in English and in Spanish!! Great creativity exercise. I can't wait for the next episode. Happy to hear you are spending time with your son.... priorities my friend, priorities!! Thanks again and regards from San Francisco, California! WE hear a lot about the American greats: Arbus, Frank, Shore, Winogrand etc but my personal Favourite, Lee Friedlander, seems to be the forgotten one. Do you have any thoughts on this photographer Please Stephen?

I mention him briefly in my first film on baldness. I like him and there's definitely a possibility that he'll get a film to himself sometime in the future. There's certainly enough work to talk about! Stay tuned and who knows?

I think the image feel was matched by the quality of your dialogue…until your cursing and final rant pull me out of a genuine reverie. I may work as text but as a reading the attention is pulled away from the content/form from there/her to your voice crying for attention. Less would have been more. I still liked it!

I love your photos. They tell a story without you adding words on top of them. However, you are also a great writer. I'm not sure I love them together. I cannot stand Geoff Dyer's descriptions or stories on top of Winogrand's photos.
