I'm out in Tunbridge Wells, my local town, photographing some portraits of people that I've met on the street. I find that you just have to get in there and straight to the point and luckily on this occasion, most of them said yes.
Thank you to everyone that took part.

Seeing as my first three comments mention one particular image at 0:58 , yes, that is Peter Capaldi. The image was taken back in 2014 and was added to my #portrait365 project. I was walking around Soho and he was just on the street so I had to ask. He was very obliging and happy to give me 30 seconds of his time ;-)

You mentioned your 365 project once before, now I'm half way through mine I seeing yours was inspiring. "What camera is that?" "A Mamiya 7ii" "Is it film? Wow!!" It was the 'Wow' that made me feel terribly old. Brilliant that you met a young analogue photographer, they are always so interested and enthusiastic. I think film definitely has a future, and Fujifilm must be thinking the same bringing back Acros. A great video Craig, I’m neither a street photographer or person photographer but I got heck of a lot out of this video. Thank you very much.

Yes, there seems to be a real resurgence in film. As long as there’s enough younger photographers choosing to use it, film manufacturers will continue to make it. Film and digital have good and bad points but I know which one I prefer.

Really great compositions Craig. Loved the shot of alleyway and lady, and the postbox couple. I did a series of street portraits in 2020-21. Not too many knock backs. After a while you get a sense for who might be responsive.

Nicely timed as I popped my Street Portrait cherry today. Seven photos took, one knockback. Enjoyed doing it as you get to chat to people you wouldn’t normally do. As you mention, you get into a zone where you’re perpetually trying to match people to backgrounds. More videos like this please Craig !

Great stuff. I had lots of good chats with people doing this when I did the 365 and when it all ended, I felt slightly sad to not have go through the process each day. I kept seeing great looking people in the weeks and months after and would say to myself “yes, I would have asked them...”

Brilliant photos. Love the juxtaposition of colors, skin tones, graphic designs in the background. You portrayed these people well, I suspect they will be pleased when they see this. I admire your ability to do this kind of photography. You clearly have a way of connecting with people, disarming the natural hesitancy and suspicion that most of us have when our image is taken. Your work, like this video, inspires one to step out of the comfort zone and try something different. Not sure I'll be able to, but you've planted the seed!

I’m not sure I agree but colour correction is very subjective. Portra is known for its warm subtle tones and putting the images next to punchy GoPro footage is always going to emphasise the differences. Film processing, scanning technique and colour correction are all going to be contributing factors as to how it looks and I’m sure these images could be tweaked more to your liking. I’ll take another look in the morning. Sometimes you can look at an image on a screen for so long that you don’t actually see a problem. Thanks for your comments.

Craig Prentis not necessarily a bad thing, just wondering if it was how it came out or if there were other things at play. I’ve been having some trouble keeping things consistent and wondered if this was a factor at play here. In complete agreement though that colours in person vary a lot to on screen which again can vary with any number of subtle changes in scanning or development.

Great video, really enjoyed it! I like the format and the interaction of asking people to take their portraits. Have to say say a lot of the shots look like Fuji pro 400H. Hi Craig, I loved looking at this movie as well as the one with the dogs. It would be interesting to see some raw video footage of the entire communication you have with your subjects, from you asking them to pose, till the moment you say goodbye. Im especially interested in how you explain about the video being made. I'm not sure about the colours in this film, but I have no experience with scanning myself, as I only just bought my first box of colour negative film a couple of weeks ago. Good work.

Once you get over the initial hesitation about approaching someone, you’ll be surprised at how many say ‘yes’. I reckon it’s about 70% from my own experience. On this occasion there was the added ask of being filmed a bit too. People are generally nice if you’re nice to them.

Do you get a model release when you do these or ....do you have it on your card that you might publish them online? Just curious...I'm thinking of making cards for my personal project work that explain that on the back and have my instagram, youtube, etc... My studio business card is ...less warm and fuzzy? It makes it seem more like a business than the practice of my craft for personal artwork, so I havent been giving that card out for this....

Just stick with it if getting shots like this is what you’re after. I’ve had days when I got lots of rejections and it does get you down but then you’ll stop someone and have a good chat and get a nice shot and you’ll feel refreshed again. I usually find people that are ‘hanging around’ are easier to get than people going from A to B. Be friendly and confident, give them a compliment and get to the point quickly.

I have thought about doing something similar Craig, but have yet to muster up the nerve. It looks like it would be rewarding. Do you offer to send people the image somehow?

That's the nice thing about the Mamiya 7II, esp. the two-tone one. People are interested in the retro styling, and it's not this imposing DSLR cannon pointing at them ready to go off. It's a conversation starter.

You're right. It's large(ish) but doesn't have that generic DSLR look. So sometimes it helps as people are intrigued by it.

First, I always enjoy your videos. I always learn something new. I am wondering if you could talk about the green cast in your images though. I shoot with Porta 400 and don't see such heavy coloring. Just curious. Regardless, look forward to your next adventure.

Thanks, I replied to an earlier comment about colour correction. I don’t think the GoPro/Portra mix helps. The last shot was tricky to correct and I can only think you’re referring to that one for the green cast?

@@CraigPrentisPhoto Thxs. I actually thought several had a green cast. Note the "shin guards" or whatever they are of the guy sitting down and looking at his cell phone. As you said it could just be a difference btwn the GoPro and the Porta, but the GoPro seemed more "true" to me. Doesn't really matter. As I said above, I was just curious.

I've had another look at the images this morning and made a few adjustments. When putting together the video, I didn't reference the Go Pro footage as a colour benchmark, I just corrected them to my tastes. So I feel like I've improved a couple of the shots taking the skin tones into account as my priority and getting a better balance with subtler greens. In the end, there is no right and wrong. Some people will like it and others won't and that's fine by me.

@@CraigPrentisPhoto Sorry, didn't mean for you to change anything. Agree with you that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the only opinion that counts in the end is that of the artist. Have a great weekend. Can't wait for your next video.

I would think the most ackward part would be to explain that you need to take b-roll footage of them from different angles :D

The footage made me feel kind of uncomfortable :/ the closeness of a stranger in their personal space is not unusual in street photography but I think it was the length of time spent that close ?
