After photographing the street portraits last week, I thought I'd get out again with my dog Barney this time and try to photograph some other dog owners with their dogs.
This isn't easy as adding an extra element into the photo (i.e the dog) is one more thing to think about and often they just want to do their own thing.
Anyway, the camera used was my Mamiya 7ii with an 80mm lens and the photos were shot on Kodak Portra 400 colour negative film.
The sound is a little rough in places but I'll try to sort something better for the GoPro. The in-built mic isn't that great especially when there's any sort of wind noise.
Thank you to everyone that took part.

This is a good idea. I love the ones with the couple sitting. The both had on elements of the same blue.

This was so much fun! It is so inspiring to see that it doesn't require exotic environment to get nice shots. It's all out there right where I am. I just need to look.

Nice shots all round. Slightly easier to relate to people with dogs, although my preferred shot was the only one without a dog, the couple on the tree trunk.

Well done under the circumstances. Not sure why you directed your subjects to look away. Liked the last one best, possibly because she didn’t look away, but also because the composition seemed stronger. Was, as always, enthralled with Barney.

Thanks. Although I'm looking for an initial engagement with the people I meet, I want these street portraits to have a touch of detachment to them, hence not smiling/looking away. It won't suit everybody but that's fine.

Barney realised there was no dog with James and Alice (I think), that’s why he wanted to be in the shot. You’ve given me a whole new appreciation of Elliott Erwitt, and his photography. A wonderful video with great shots, both made me smile. Thank you for all the work that went into this one.

Another cracking shoot with some fabulous portraits Craig. You seem to handle the people so well. Loved all the images and I am a dog lover too so added bonus.. strangelyt though the image I liked most was the couple without the dog... something about that image. The lady with the pug also - the expression of both subjects just brough a smile to my face.

Thanks Alan, I used to photograph dogs a few years back. Just the ones I saw on my dog walks. I haven't done it for years but check out 'The Dog Snapper' on Facebook as that page is still up there.

Craig, very enjoyable for me. I only do landscape work so it was nice to see you taking on a project totally out of my wheelhouse. Heck what's not to like? Somewhat candid shots with friendly folks and their wonderful dogs.......it also looks like Barney snuck in some extra treats from the gracious models too....8>)

I'm a real dog lover so I like coming across other dogs on my trips out. People have so much love for their dogs and they're usually happy to have their photo taken with them (or the dog on their own).

That was fun Craig - I like the first picture where the dog was just doing his own thing and not having anything to do with this posing malarkey! The lady in the blue dress under the basketball hoop is cool as well - looked very out of place and I think that was the appeal. The dog picture without the dog (despite Barney's best efforts :-) ) was great - especially good to hear you approaching them to take the portrait. Look forward to the next one!

Really enjoyed these street portrait videos you've done. Top marks for compositions and people skills. Funnily enough I asked for and took my first ever street portrait in the pantiles a few weeks back with my bronica, it was an emboldening experience. One thing I have noticed is that these photos seem to me to have a colour cast. I myself am terrible at colour correcting so wouldn't want to say where or what the colour cast is. Anyway, really enjoyed this video again, interesting divergence from your previous subject matter.

Thanks. Well done for getting out. The Pantiles isn’t a bad place to go as people are basically hanging out and not in too much of a hurry. Still trying to get to a happy place with regards to colour correcting Portra. Everyone will have their views on what looks right or not.

Hi Craig! Thank you for creating such interesting content, I really enjoy watching your work. I've been using film cameras for several years. I have no experience with large format, but it would have been fun to try it at some point. If there is such a thing as an entry level 4x5 camera, could you recommend one?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
I think if you're looking for something entry level/affordable, there's also eBay. That's where I got my MPP from. Intrepid are relatively affordable but you'll need to add the price of other accessories too, i.e. lens, film holders, loupe etc. This video is helpful too kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNOFq8aL2Zitn5s.html

great shots. I bet it is so hard to do with having the dog with you yourself too. That being said I may give this a go and take my dog however, out of the choice of my RB67 or M6 I think ill go for the lighter option :D
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s not that easy doing photos, filming and dog walking at the same time. Using a camera like an RB67 is a good ice breaker for getting street portraits done.
