This is, to me, a well put together video, and it gives a very realistic picture of the realities of one of the key aspects of navigating a large trawler on the loop. Thank you!

Good hole shot, Cap. Lines prepped BEFORE coming into a high traffic area is such a basic thing, yet so many people don't do it, then PANIC when they have to do so many things at the last second. Well done, crew!

My gosh backing in is soooo much easier than forward . But pulling into a finger slip bow first you get to watch other boats pass by from the stern with a beer or glass of wine to relax . I can't emphasize this enough learn to drive your tonka toy backwards using your gears and docking forward with your gears as well . rudder always midship when docking/undocking twin screw . Cheers 👍and safe travels

Living in Grand Haven I can tell you that every nice weekend that channel is busy! The trailers parked were actually a part of the Grand Haven State Park. That was starboard as you entered. To add to the confusion, there is often a freighter coming in or out as well.

I never trust a dock hand. I never hand them a rope until after I am docked and parked but then I can pilot very well.. 9 times out of 10 the person on the dock will crank in on the rope and throw your stern out or take you off track. Stand back. Get out of the way and don't grab a rail or touch anything until I'm in. I do like having them there although normally not needed, in case the wind pushes me off before I'm in.. this was a point and go coming in bow first. Nice and slow. Nice job Captain and crew

Great docking job. I always had white knuckles and shaky knees when I brought in our last big boat, a 70' Monticello River Yacht we ran on the Ohio River, docking at the Four Seasons Marina in Cincinnati. I had a channel that lead from the river to my dock that was only about a 100' wide and I could not see my slip till it was on the port beam because on the one side of the slip was a sister boat to mine and to the other side, a 60' Bluewater. The wind often ran down the channel either coming from the east or west. Once I turned her, I was committed to fitting an 18' beam boat into a 22' wide dock. I was glad to see the interesting approach to Grand Haven. I am looking for another boat to do the Great Loop too in a few years from now and when I do, Grand Haven will be a must stop, hopefully getting there in late July for their Coast Guard Days celebration, one of the largest in the nation. The town is officially designated a "Coast Guard City." They sure have a nice station there. I am a former Coastie myself.

Michael, I was in Four Seasons Marina last week as we are traveling from Nashville up the Ohio. I know exactly what you mean. I ended up docked next to a 60 Bluewater as well! he had lights strung on the sides…. Yes, that channel along the edge was TIGHT for us. Wind blowing me against the muddy shore, I went on to the back and turned around and came in on the starboard. I was kicking up mud big time. We went from there to Ripley Boat Club and are now at Holiday Point in Franklin Furnace.
