Some tips and basic exercises to help achieve more flexibility.
Thanks for watching my lessons and tutorials! Please leave questions and tutorial requests in the comments! I look forward to dancing with you!
About Me:
Hi, my name is Victoria! I’m a ballet dancer and teacher trained in the Vaganova method. I make instructional videos without sugar-coating the gritty details. I danced professionally as a freelancer, and in a contemporary company for several years in NYC. Due to the pandemic, I now reside in rural Pennsylvania. I'm a little salty because I struggle with chronic illnesses & invisible disabilities, but I try to keep it real and raise awareness...
FAQs:
Are you actually Russian?:
Yes, I’m technically a tiny bit Russian.
We always thought my mother was 100% Italian. But when she took the ancestry test, we learned she’s actually a bit Middle Eastern and Circassian (Southern Russia) as well!
Did you train in Russia?:
No, I did not attend ballet school in Russia.
But all of my instructors have direct lineage to the Vaganova Academy. I received a majority of my training from Ballerina Irina Lebedeva, as well as other former principal dancers from the Mariinsky Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet.
What ballet academy did you attend?:
I never attended a formal ballet academy. All of my training is a culmination of public dance studios and open adult ballet classes that would run 2-3 days a week- with the occasional summer intensive. This is why I’m only about 85% competent in my execution and lessons. I just do the best with what i've got- The average American dancer might not notice this, but the Russian dancers definitely do!
Growing up near NYC, I took advantage of the most prestigious schools and teachers in the area, including; Gelsey Kirkland, Simon Kazantsev, Yaroslav Fadeyev, Katherine Healy, Leslie Browne, Lupe Serrano, and collegiate programs at American Ballet Theatre.
I did visit St. Petersburg and Moscow after I graduated college in 2012. I had the absolute honor of visiting the Vaganova Academy and observing some classes. I also took company class with Yacobson Ballet.
Where do you work as a professional?:
Since I got such a late start in my training, (and went to college right after high school) I didn’t join a company until I was in my late 20s. Until then, I was mostly teaching and freelancing. I did Nutcracker gigs, occasional guest appearances for studio productions, and entertainment gigs for high end parties. In 2019 I joined a contemporary ballet company in NYC. I left in 2021 when I moved to Pennsylvania. Now I teach in multiple studios in PA, but I'm trying to start my own ballet company.
What’s the story with your company?:
I’m the founder of Indigo Ballet, a collaborative, dancer-run company with no hierarchy. Currently, I’m working on building a repertoire of virtual performances (music videos) to show people what we have to offer. We will be performing for a live audience in Spring/Summer of 2024!
If you wish to donate towards this endeavor, funds will go directly to the dancers of Indigo Ballet. You can do so at- gofund.me/fe171a40
Why do you talk about your chronic illnesses?:
Firstly, this is just the platform where I have the most outreach. I am passionate about raising awareness about hidden illnesses, also called “invisible diseases.” I feel these illnesses are especially relevant to the average ballet dancer since; The field is dominated by AFABs that frequently gravitate towards dance because of natural flexibility. This correlates to hyper mobility spectrum disorders and connective tissue disorders which are rarely diagnosed, and can lead to serious problems later. AFABs also have higher rates of autoimmune disorders and are most likely to have our pain dismissed, if we are not already hiding it for fear of being seen as unreliable or weak.
The ‘teacher’ in me wants to educate any chance I get. If my shared experiences can help a dancer get a diagnosis, early treatment and a longer, healthier career; why wouldn’t I talk about it?

So many "beginner" ballet videos about stretching. None say much but always show an experienced dancer doing things us folks starting out could never do! Thank you for not only showing us how.....but explaining HOW and WHY!!! Well done!

I am a 43 year old ballet beginner and I have gotten so much out of your videos. I am working on my flexibility and though I have been fairly physically active now for several years i feel that I’m a bit behind where I should be in the flexibility department. I’ve been doing yoga poses which has helped but I’m ready to really get serious about it so that I’ll be more flexible for ballet. This has been extremely helpful!

You're absolutely amazing. I love your personality and that you always explain bad habits in a very casual relatable slightly funny way. For someone like me who's 25 and very new to ballet and jazz it's really useful. There are million ways how to do it right and that's very good but showing what's wrong really helps for a smooth start ♥️ Keep dancing and the good work up!

You are an amazing teacher. You explain well and have a real talent to popularize, make everything you say simple and easy to understand. I love all your videos and even though I don't teach the Vaganova method, I love learning about all different ballet steps. I also really love the work you put in before making your videos, your research is on pointe (had to add the "e", sorry for this bad joke).

You are a great teacher. Your examples are really helpful. In my work I'm sitting for 8 hrs and my back is stiff. I try to stretch my back and it hurst a lot. I always want to do a split but it feels like is going to take forever with my stiff back. Ironically I dance Argentine Tango and if I don't warm up, it hurts. In tango the top of the body disassociate from the bottom all the time. We twist like a screw and that kind of movement it help.

It's NEVER too late honey! You might not become a principal dancer or dance in a company, but you can still become a dance teacher or just enjoy dance. Ask a local dance studio that offers ballet if you could take classes and do chores for them in exchange, maybe they will accept. Don't give up ;)

You must join a class, try to find a reputable class and if it costs a bit too much then try to get a Saturday job to pay for it. no one ever gained a ballet dancers position by just practicing in their bedroom. Good luck.

My goal is to become more flexible id like to be able to do a general split. I currently do stretching in the am and in the evening. Going for 21 days ( make it a habit) see how I feel and where I am on the 21st day but to continue doing it until I reach my goal.

Stretching my hamstrings while sitting always hurt my back when I wasn't very flexible yet, and I was more rounding and yanking at my lumbar spine rather than actually stretching my legs. If you have the same problem, try this: Crouch down, feet flat on the floor, about shoulder width apart, then lock your wrists behind your ankles and slowly lift your butt while lengthening your torso. That's the most important part; to feel like you're leading with the butt and lengthening your torso. Because it makes you tilt your hips towards your thighs, and that's what causes the stretch.

(This is a long post with updates and progress) So i just got into ballet (had 2 classes) but i've loved it ever since elementary (i used to watch dance academy and do the moves i saw them practice on the show at home). I can sometimes do the front leg first type of splits (depending on how warm i am an i guess how flexible i am that month or smth. I really dont know to be honest. I've done it cold but been very high from the floor warm so 🤷🏻‍♀️) But i've never been able to even come close to a middle splits which is really annoying to me cause it doesnt make sense in my mind (because i could do it with my right leg front, anyone know why that is?). So my goals are: - full side splits (with both left and right in front and also afterwards an over splits (more than 180 degrees) - middle splits -i can already touch my toes and ground while sitting or standing but i want my entire belly to lay flat on my legs while doing the stretch Wish me good luck i'll try to do some stretching every day and update you guys Start point: couldnt do a full splits on either side after ballet class (warm) even though i used to be able do it with my right leg front. Actually my left leg front was better this time. Maybe my muscles are tighter because of ballet strengthening/soreness? Forward fold i can touch the ground but when i want to put my hands flat can't do it or only for a second while pushing and leaning forward. Want to work on that too. - Flat hands comfortable and able to embrace my legs while standing. 20 sep '19 - did some pigeon stretches, butterfly stretch and frog stretch, while under blanket but not actively warmed up (but it's within my comfort zone i think and i'm doing it slowly)

Good common sense advice here!!!!!!! Any advice for a returning martial artist of 50 something yrs? would like to get my splits back - after about 3 years since returning i am still about 4 inches from the splits and can only just touch my toes (annoying) . At the moment i am only stretching when i train (Tae Kwon Do) or hit the gym, averages out at 4 times per week. - Not often enough is it??? But will my advancing age PREVENT me from achieving my goals?

Do you think that a massage chair in the morning before stretching is a good idea to warm up our muscles? Just found you today. The quality of your teaching and the video quality are excellent. Thank you!
@SaltySugarPlum
@SaltySugarPlum 4 жыл бұрын
thank you so much!!! I think a massage chair is a great way to start relaxing and loosening the muscles for sure. but you do also want to do SOME light physical activity to actually get the muscles working and blood flowing, so that the body is engaged and ready to start doing something physically demanding. moving your body can get fluids moving (for example, the fluid in your bursa in your joints) in ways that sitting in the chair cant do. but the chair sounds like a great addition to a stretch routine :)
@DeborahPinkowski
@DeborahPinkowski 4 жыл бұрын
@@SaltySugarPlum thank you very much. I use a rebounder. Is that a good thing to get the fluids moving? And if so, in what order should I do the pre-stretch workout with the massage chair and rebounder? I'm 67 and I've never danced. I've had 2 ballet classes so far. Loving it. Your videos are an amazing resource!
@SaltySugarPlum
@SaltySugarPlum 4 жыл бұрын
@@DeborahPinkowski i found an article that might explain this way better than i can. (link below) www.dancemagazine.com/stretching-for-dancers-2639955572.html?rebelltitem=16#rebelltitem16 so my guess for you: the rebounder is good for stamina and getting blood pumping and 'warming up.' as we learn more about dancers' bodies, we've discovered that "dynamic stretching" is best for the beginning of your work out. such as gentle lunges, or a yoga routine. so in your case, the massage chair is a nice way to "wake up" and then you'd move onto something gentle that requires some muscle, will elevate your heart rate, but not totally exhaust you either. this could be the rebounder, those lunges i mentioned, jumping jacks, a yoga routine etc... once you feel sufficiently 'warm' (it could take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1hr, depending on the person and the intensity of the activity) THEN you start easing into your stretches. if you really want to 'hold' a stretch, it should aways be at the END of your workout. and if you wanted to go back to your massage chair again at the end of the day (or a couple hours after your work out), that would be a fabulous way to break up lactic acid and help keep those muscles loose! too much lactic acid build up and keep your muscles tighter than you'd realize.

i don't have my center split either! i am also stuck at about 130 degrees. i'm sorry i don't have any tips for you (i think it looks like i have more in this video from the angle of the camera. my legs are actually forward slightly) i could never do a full 180 side split. i always assumed it was my anatomy (like an actual skeletal structure) not allowing my femurs to go any farther. you don't need a side split to be a good dancer! (how often do you plop on the floor and do a split when you are on stage? almost never!) unless you NEED to have a side split for a performance or something, i would not worry about it

@SaltySugarPlum
@SaltySugarPlum 6 жыл бұрын
you can become flexible at ANY age. it may just take a little longer for adults because they're not as "loose and limber" as little kids are. kids also heal faster, so if you pull a muscle as an adult, it can take a little longer to get better. you can start stretching at any age. if you do it carefully and consistently, you can become just as flexible as someone who started young. fun fact, i didn't get my split until i was 12! all the other kids already had it by age 7. just do some every day! you will get there.

Do you have any tips for hypermobile people? What's a good safe way to increase muscle flexibility?
@SaltySugarPlum
@SaltySugarPlum 4 жыл бұрын
hypermobile people can do all the same stretches, we just have to be careful to also do stability + strengthening exercises so we dont get too loose. so combine your stretch routine with planks, core work, calf raises etc so you build up some strength. "active" stretching (aka moving through a stretch, like doing lunges, or actively swinging your legs) are better for hypermobile people tha "static / passive" stretches (aka when you just "sit" in the same stretch for minutes at a time)

sometimes one leg or ankle is more sore than the other. I had ankle surgery on my right ankle, and so it feels very tight and sore most of the time. we like to keep our injuries warm. the warmth helps all the tight muscles relax and stretch a bit so it doesnt hurt as much

you shouldn't stay in a stretch for a very long time (it can start to damage ligaments and weaken them) doing multiple 'sets' of 30 seconds at a time is one of the best ways to stretch for progress, and prevent injuries
