I was forced to play Piano and Violin, but if I was caught listening to Beethoven on my CD player instead of doing math I got punished. My childhood was solely focused on having good performance rather than the joy of playing music or learning something I liked. I got all A's in high school, except once I got a B+ and was scolded. By college I burnt out and nearly quit school forever. To piss off my tiger mom I went back packing for 2 years after college and became an artist.

You need to remember that u r not doing stuff for your parents ur parents, it’s for you’re own future. If being an artist was because you like it then good for you but if it was just for revenge then that is really not worth it because it’s your life you are living and it’s you’re future you are responsible for.

Well we don’t know what was really going on behind the scene, this is only because there’s a camera. The mom can’t just yell at her daughter when the whole nation is watching. But it shows how detrimental it is to be the daughter getting that good of an SAT score and still get disappointed by her mom. If i got that SAT score i would probably throw a party and my mom probably be proud too.

710 isn't a good score if she is trying to get into ivy leagues.. that's the truth. Not trying to put her down but 730 in Math level 1? If all she wanted to do was to apply to her state flagship university then 710 is great, but when everyone is scoring 800s and sending them to ivy leagues how are you going to compete with them..

No this was a test score, and this was a sat subject test, which is somewhat like an a-level. These tests are graded from 200 to 800 in ten point increments, with 800 being the highest. Strictly percentile wise, a 710 on that particular test is probably like a 70th percentile score, which may not seem amazing but keep in mind that the people taking subject are very skilled at that subject, so its still a good score, but in the end a college admissions officer will decide what a "good" score is.

At the end of the day, it comes down to, your GPA. Mine was a 4.79/5 so like 97th percentile. I got mostly A's in my 4 years of high school. But, I got encouragement and I studied out of passion, because my parents didn't make me feel restricted, I got a 1510 on the official SAT exam, I was hoping for a 1550 for the amount of time I spent studying. I told my mom and she told me that it was enough and I didn't need to take it anymore. My parents don't pressure me, I'm also Indian so that makes a point there. I mean sure my mom does slap me if I got like a 70 in a quiz, but they don't emotionally deteriorate me and make it feel like hell the time I get the bad score. I got a 30 once on an APCSA test and my mom was like ok, we will sort this out, and she didn't slap me then.

Yeah, I know the frustration when it comes to the whole SAT crap, just because I didn't get anything near even a 2000. At the end, I was still accepted and got scholarships in the colleges I actually wanted to go to, brand name doesn't guarantee a good product, why would it be the same with education? i think people just don't take the time to walk in the shoes of Azn parents. we all think they're irrational or tyranical but at the same time they were students when they were young too. plus they grew up in an era where the only way to get out of their situtation or to leave Asia was through academics. but at the same time these parents don't take the time to consider things from our perspectives. 710 is excellent but in their eyes it's not good enough because it has to be perfect
