As obsessed I've been with SAT scores at times, it is ridiculous how much value Asian parents place on SAT scores... My parents are not even that strict for Asian parents, but when I got a 770 on SAT I CR, my dad said, "Not that bad, but you can get a better score."

Allen Liu I, a white boy who gets a sick pleasure out of Asian parents, got a 770 too but I'm not bothered by the cruelty or unfairness of Asian parenting, just the inefficiency. On a college application the difference between a 770 and an 800 is pittance. Spend the time freed from studying for the second time learning the Euphonium or playing on a Basketball team. Not only are you having a better time and learning more (because the difference between a 770 and an 800 is honestly nothing but chance, test-taking tips, and eh, maybe a dash of hoodoo) It strengthens your application much more to have solid extra curriculars than to nit-pick over SAT scores.

I had high expectations for myself (I and I alone wanted to get above a 700) but these kids are being borderline abused by their parents. This documentary or whatever is supposed to show what kind of households kids these days are growing up in, and obviously they're not very good.

I'm in 7th grade and taking algebra II (yes, also Asian parents) and my parents have such high expectations: get a 98+ on report cards every time. Get 100 on tests every time, study in all my free time (no social life for me) and practice 3 hours a day EACH on flute and violin (typical Asian instruments) I'm so lucky I don't have to take piano. I hate this regimen, but someday I will be grateful when I get into a good college.

In my opinion 770 in Literature Subject Test is excellent. She isn't native english speaker, so the literature and sat 1 reading and writing should be much difficult for an asian or a non-native speaker than for a native one. Also, literature have a bad curve, so maybe she got 2 or 3 questions wrong. A 770 in Math 2 could be bad for someone like japanese people, since their math subject is harder and more complex ,and math 2 has an excellent curve.

A lot of the graduates in my school who go onto Harvard, Yale, or Duke are the students with 2100-2250 SATs and were captains of multiple teams. There was I believe three or four Asian students who had gotten 2400 on the SATs and 800s on some subject tests, but had went on to go to Cornell and John Hopkins and one other university I forgot. As an Asian, my parents now do know that test scores and academic success isn't necessarily the deciding factor for getting into an Ivy League, thankfully.

So actually it is possible to score a 800 since there are lots of people who completely aced the SAT. When you guys see this and think that it brings the child down, this is nothing at all. I'm not blaming you because you are not used to this parenting, but I actually think the mom is being EXTREMELY nice in front of the cameras. Lots of people are being extremely ignorant just because their parents aren't like this. Again, I'm not blaming you guys for not having hardcore asian parents, I just get kind of mad because her reaction is WAY too nice compared to lots of strict asian parents. Lots of people are like 'omg what is wrong with the mom' or 'i would be blessed with that score wtf' but this is a completely different environment that is filled with different expectations.

@jjjjorman Incorrect. The SAT score alone does not get you into any school. The SAT score is only one part of the application. People often mistake the SAT for an entrance test - it isn't. By itself, it guarantees nothing. You could get a perfect score and be rejected due to the rest of your application, which includes all your academics and all your personal elements. This happens all the time at the most competitive schools.

A 770 on SAT II lit is more impressive than a 770 on SAT I critical reading. Even if the percentile for a 770 on Lit is lower than CR. The Lit test is taken overwhelmingly by extremely high caliber students who are aiming for ivy league and comparable colleges. The SAT reasoning test on the other hand is taken by the average person who wants to go to college. So the percentiles arent directly comparable like that.

Plus I would add as a person who has seen both educational system(european and american), I don't see any problems in the American system, the difference though between USA and other countries is: in non American high schools, kids are taught to study in inductive way. Meaning that when the teacher gives the kids a test or a quiz.Students are not supposed to.....

A 770 lit score is insanely high...the parents should be proud. The mother shouldn't be so shortsighted. This whole thing is a self-fulfilling prophecy-the mother thinks her child must get a higher score than other students to get into Ivies. Her child sacrifices a lot of life, health, friends, and even public image to do so. Since she no longer has many of the characteristics of a person who knows how to have fun, she is defined by her scores, which must be higher than usual. Stupid parents.

Actually colleges want more variety and want to see more than just grades. Yes it is harder to get into a good college as an Asian but it is due to having a lot of asians or smarter people in your area. If you're in a place where the majority of the kids go to community college and you get a decent score say 2000 on the SAT's you have a good chance into going into a good college due to your score being much better than your area.

Now for a long time i hated that type of system, the reason why i hated was in order to get high results in high school u really needed to study a lot. 770 out of 800 is like an A. Think about it. If there was a test with 800 questions and you got 770 of them right, that would be an A. Hahah poor girl.

Are you kidding me? A 770 out of 800 in Sat is extremely good. If it was a normal exam then I would have understand the matter. But it's Sat and she got like 96% marks. That's wonderful.
