Stucco thickness over concrete block?
Folks, we are located in Oakland, CA.
FYI, folks, here are all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

www.GiordanoPlastering.com/ Jason’s Website.
In this video, we explain how thick to apply stucco so grout lines don’t show.
When the walls get wet.
FYI, scratch coats are unnecessary for any brick, blocks, or Terra Cotta walls, or any cementitious substrates in Nature.
Remember that a stucco scratch Coat is 3/8 of an inch thick, whereas a Skimcoat is at least one-half inch or more; this minor 1/8 difference makes a big difference.
What happens if you apply less than 1/2 inch going over Blocks?
Excellent question; glad you asked, nothing.
Except when it rains, you will possibly notice the grout lines.
FYI, You don’t need to attach any stucco netting or stucco 3.4 mesh netting to blocks, bricks, or concrete walls; however, you must pressure wash them exceptionally well for the stucco to achieve a tremendous mechanical bond that adheres forever.
HOW MUCH SAND IS WHEN MIXING?
How much sand is for each coat of stucco?
Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand.
We often mix 3 parts of sand into one part of Portland cement plaster. The plaster I use is premium-based Portland stucco. It has lime and is common in it.
• Stucco Concrete Blocks... Improve cinder block walls with stucco.
• Stucco concrete retain... Stucco over concrete walls to remove form board lines.
• Stucco Concrete Blocks... Stucco a concrete-block wall.
• Stucco over concrete b... Plaster your brick walls.

Fantastic demo! Love the corner. Wow! Hey, have you ever had to do a tennis backboard wall over cement blocks? Same idea? I am very afraid my wife's deadly forehand will crack the wall. Would some kind of plastic additive help or just follow your excellent recommendation for a routine wall?MAx sand recommendation (3 part sand)?

Evening Amariah, working with stucco or as my friends say in the UK Render, is a good honest living, but to do it by yourself is extremely hard work, I have had to a few times and have learned the hard way there is no glory or extra cash to be made, just hard work with aches and pains. Hire at least one good guy and while you plaster he or she mixes, set scaffold cleans and help with all your need. I make plastering look easy as my son or brother do all the hard work behind the scenes, I just plaster and rambal at the same time which is quite easy, There is plenty of work in this field as it takes awhile to learn but is sort of hard and messy at times as you well know, Cheers and best wishes with your new career, Kirk giordano Rendering

Kirk. Any bonding agent used for exterior application?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Evening Spencer, a bonding agent was not needed for this cinderblock wall as the owner pressure washed it well, This allows our new porous cementitious finish to adhere to this existing Porous finished cinder block wall, " by suctions," mixed with a proper amount of skill to determine how much water water to use prior to application of new stucco. However I did apply a bonding agent as I like to make sure my work adheres to another man's work of pressure washing. FYI, if I had pressure washed this wall I would not have needed a bonding agent as I am very detailed with my tasks. Have a great day, Kirk giordano Plastering

Gorgeous job! What is the expansion joint ? Do you put semi rigid fiber in there? Please explain.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Evening a concrete, brick or cinderblock wall does not need an expansion joint, it a metal piece or channel that allows a wooden wall to expand and contract while allowing a bit of movement thus helping prevent hairline cracking. It does not stop hairlineing but it helps big time. Have a great day, Kirk giordano Plastering
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 7 жыл бұрын
Kirk. Please go to 5:31 and you're telling us about an expansion joint there. But it doesn't look like an expansion joint
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
O,oooooo, I see said the blind man, what I'm referring too is a natural expansion joint, this cinderblock did not touch the original stucco wall, so to fill that gap with stucco would have stopped both the home and the fense from natural movement when the rains start and with 30 days let alone more rain both the house and the wall will lift and shift, you can't see this action nor measure it with any man made devices, however both need only lift less than 1/8 of and inch within 30 or more days of solid rain and voila a hairline crack at the weak link. (not on my watch) therefore the natural gap that was well thought out when this cinderblock wall was built remains in place as old Kirk is not fool enough to fill the gaps just because it would save some time. I took my trowel on edge and recreated the natural expansion. Good question and sharp eye. Have a great day, Kirk giordano Plastering

Here in Mexico ALL the people do that by throwing the mortar to the wall, NOT by putting the mortar with that trowel (which is easier and quicker), as a civil engineer I don't know why they keep doing it like that (by throwing the mortar to the wall instead of putting it with that trowel), but I think your method is WAY better

Hi Elizabeth, as a rule, I buy Hansons Premium Lehigh cement plaster it's sold at the plaster yards. How much sand for each coat of stucco? Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand. Most times we mix 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster. We add water by eyesight when it looks right we stop adding water. If it looks too soupy we add more sand or cement. best wishes. kirk

This is how they do it here with a 1 to 5 ratio. However like to ask, i told them to add hex mesh to the exterior walls, so not to have cracks in the future. Do you think that will be ok, will it work. Also your thoughts on 1 to 5 mix on sifted river sand.

Kirk, I have a vertical crack that keeps returning. I stuccoed the first half of 10 townhouses and another contractor did the other five. The other contractor got to his scratch coat well before me and applied it on to my side of the project about 6 or 7inches. This is the only crack that keeps returning in all of the houses. I thinking maybe his cement is reacting at a different rate then my cement because he was about 3 weeks ahead of me. I really feel like I should have scraped of the cement that was encroaching on my half and not paired the scratch coats. This crack is a f***ing nightmare. Any suggestions?

Hi Wayne, is this crack where an addition meets an existing home, if so an expansion joint would help. Does his wire overlap your wire, if not break out and overlap then replaster. This crack from hell may be on a natural structural stress point also, where the best you can do is caulk it in early morning when it it the largest, if you caulk in the afternoon it will be closed because of the wood heating up and expanding, thus will push on the stucco which hides hairline cracks most of the time. Or perhaps this crack is where vibration is constantly such as a window or gate, when each is closed the vibrations will always hairline a wall. We are quick to blame workmanship when most times it a condition that is out of our hands. Remember vibration or the slightest movement on stucco or concrete is like kryptonite to superman. Best wishes, Kirk giordano rendering

Good afternoon Truck Dude, I can change the guys into dudes but some gals might call and say how come you only address, "folks as dudes?" the game can still go on and drink with each time dude is mentioned. When we used to play that game we'd have to reply after each drink, "thank you, sir, may I have another" forget this goofy saying and someone catches it and says, you forgot to say thank you, one would have to drink another. Evening Spencer, this is because your a professional with a ton of time in. I'm getting kind of bored with a hawk and trowel, I think I'll do a video using my shoe as a trowel just because I can, possible with hand throwing the mud on the wall or using a shovel. We actually did do a huge mountain retaining wall and used possibly thousand of shovels of mud to be trough on the mud which I then troweled down into the design i wished. The amount we used that day was 10 tons of sand with about 65 bags on common cement plaster, It does not spread well for walls but it's incredibly strong and cost less than the cement plasters I normally use on homes. Have a great day, Kirk giordano Plastering

Good afternoon Trevor, it's a word to describe the second coat. There was a time when the second coats were indeed brown, with the acceptance of Portland cement over 100 years ago. The second coats should now be called the Gray coat instead of the brown coat. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm. Introducing peace, love, and harmony back to the plastering world. Howdy Mac daddy, actually my back is better than it has been in the last 2 years, I was suffering from TMS for a while, but have it in control a lot better now, Most of the public will never know what that means unless that person has had severe pain for at least over 2 years, tried everything and still were almost to the crippling stage and even then won't get it, John Sarno's books have gotten my mind right just like in the movie, "Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman"" I got my mind right boss, was a cool clip in that movie.
