It's so nice that the auto pilot worked for your passage. : - ) I've never sailed at night so that always seems odd to me. I also solo sail so I have to do everything by myself. I need to rig up an "auto pilot" so I can leave the tiller and fiddle with the sails or some other task. I'll try to figure out a mechanism this Spring/Summer.

In the opening scene with Bill talking in the wind on the dock, you pan left to show Calico Skies properly secured. In that shot, with her new bimini rack and new set up, damn she looks good!! She looks like she's ready for business , a bit of an attitude to her, some "bring it" I'm ready. I like that. And as much of a total bummer all these recent breakdowns have been, thank God they're happening now instead of out in the Pacific somewhere. Here they can be addressed. In that regard this shakedown cruise has been a total success, it has exposed the wrinkles it was meant to and will bring Calico Skies that much closer. You guys must feel real good as you approach her, knowing how much work you have put into her and just how ready she is. Take time to relish that, you deserve it. Be well my friends!!

@CalicoSkiesSailing I have the same issue (too much crap hanging off the back of the boat!) You can mount hydrovanes off centre though! Sooner or later hydrovane need to make a remote sail with a bowden cable to the actuator... then the sail could be up on top of the solar arch!

Dear Gracie and Bill; A mistake made often is trying to flake the main from mast or mid boom. Long time hack is to fold from aft end of boom and moving forward as you go. Now of course this is all dependant on having access to said boom end with secure footing. Also the boom is secure (centered and lashed so it cannot flailing back and forth)

A stuck brush would certainly be enough to stop pretty much any motor that uses brushes. I would say replace the brushes because while they are still working, they are probably predisposed to sticking if they have worn that much. When you next pull the motor apart, maybe check that the brush holder is not bent. Most brushed motors are either accessible from from the outside after assembling or have a hole for a piece of wire to hold the brushes back while assembling or the brush can be pushed "too far" back so the spring rests on the side of the brush and can be just pushed forward after it is all together. There is a way of holding the brushes back for all motors while assembling that is easy to release after the brush plate is installed. I find that if I know that, I can generally find it ;) You may find inexpensive motor rebuilding services in Mexico that cost a whole lot less than shipping in a new one.

Have the same Simrad Robertson pilot. Mine is from about 1985. Got it from a couple that replaced it before crossing the Atlantic. It has been working flawlessly on board sv Hulda for about 20 years now. Never failed. Mine have a slight different motor. It's a fantastic piece of equipment! When NAVICO took over Simrad, the pilot was dropped, too expensive, they said. No parts available. I asked Simrad for a new pump, as a spare. The answer was: "What do you want that for? It has never failed. We don't have the pump as a spare part". So I bought a complete pilot with double cylinders as a spare.

@@CalicoSkiesSailing Yes, agree on that. To my experience is that the electro/hydraulic systems lasts much longer and are segnificant more reliable than the electro/mechanical systems. Bill’s craftsmanship and service skills really impressed, I don’t understand all the concern over the autopilot fix. (You’re not the only one that solders over paper towels. My wife swears I am going to burn the house down some day but she doesn’t know I spritz them with water first!!). I really appreciate the added insight and commentary on sail choice decision making and outcome. It helps me understand your analysis of the sailing conditions and sail plan. What seem like automated little decisions to you guys provide incredible insight to newbies and planners. I can’t thank you enough for the wonderful editing and music choices. Great job.

Glad you got it sorted, well done on the logic tree. Brushes can be easily had from electrical rebuilders and many auto parts stores. They are very easy to cut and file to size/shape if you can't find OE or OE fit ones. Dremel metal cutting disc and sanding drums work well. Don't forget to check for wear in the shaft bearings. If your armature hits the field magnets due to worn bushings it will make the motor do what yours was doing, i.e. stop working after it gets warm and start working again after it cools down. But your brushes looked like they were the issue. Careful when you smack a permanent magnet motor. The magnets break easily and many are simply glued (not well) into place. Nice to hear you have spares aboard now in PV. Expensive spares are almost a guarantee the original will never break.

Nice fix on the auto pilot. If you have to open it up again, a fine file to trim the bakelite in between the contacts on the commutator. It will help with current flow, the motor will start easier. You guys have a Happy New Year!

Neat repair, Bill. I noticed the coincidence that your final video of 2022 featured Loreto (due to Kazza's illness - Grace was there, at least, I can't remember if Bill was) - but either way, now you are back there again in what I presume is your final video of 2023. Neat bookends to an "interesting" year!

I wonder if that autopilot motor should really be a brushless DC motor. Given the harsh environment (ie. salt spray) etc... and the fact that brushes do wear out as do commutators I think a better design for that autopilot would be to use a brushless motor. I would still carry a spare motor anyway especially for some long ocean passage or whatever.

Good job with the auto pilot, to me the commutator looked real good so I believe the problem was with the brushes or with the brush spring tension. Suggest to get a few spare brushes combined with their springs and lead wires. Bill works like any good electrician, very nice video guys ! Happy New Year from Sechelt ! P&F

Sorry for your misfortune. Hopefully a servo pendulum system is on your radar. A cape horn would sure look sexy on your transom

I think a wind vane would be the straw that broke the camels back on that transom, no room for the wind part of the gear. Plus you can't hoist the dinghy on those shiny new davits.

If it doesn't move and it should, WD40. If it does move and it shouldn't, duct tape. So how did you replace the brush cap function? You didn't show us that.

@darrengladstone3159 I don't know if you were sincere or sarcastic. Bill was on deck raising sails in a somewhat hectic departure and Grace can't do any heavy lifting due to recent surgery. The reason inflatable vests are worn as that the event that causes people to go overboard frequently stuns them perhaps to unconsciousness. He had one on later. It's when you're rushed that bad things happen. The cruisers are not daredevils but balance risks with equipment and knowledge.
