As May and my time in Georgia for the spring came to an end, I had a series of great days in the field including some of my favorite finds of the season. This video chronicles several of those days. Hope y'all enjoy, should only be one more Georgia video after this one before we get into Texas!

Beautiful scenery! Good work. I have the glass lizards in my yard. Less and less with climate change, but I put huge amounts of wood chips in the back yard, and got a return of native insects and snakes, I have the Scarlet Kingsnake as well. I built an air layer woodchip wall about three feet thick, 25 feet long and three feet tall. I should get some Racers again I hope.

Hey Noah, The lateral skin fold is thought to allow their stiff body expand slightly when needed for breathing or swallowing a large insect like a grasshopper or katydid. I found a nice Western ssp. in Arkansas years ago. They are beautiful animals. Wait, I could be wrong. My wife just suggested it is a place for them to hold their wallets.

I can't get over how nonchalantly that beauty of a kingsnake bit you. I was expecting those fast, angry strikes...Instead she just casually opens her mouth and starts gnawing on you. That was hilarious. XD Beautiful find, guys! I love your Herping vids~ (Also dang that was a BIG BOI of a bullfrog. The envy my little childhood frog-hunter vibes felt at that moment. XD)

Does that hurt? I love snakes, and whenever I find one I always freeze up to pick it up. It doesn’t look painful but maybe the shock freaks me out too much.
@thatspazzchild02
@thatspazzchild02 4 жыл бұрын
@@MysteryRobin285 Honestly, I'd say it hurts a LOT less than you expect it to! I admit before I had my own, I was always terrified of being bitten...To the point that it took me WAY longer than it should have just to take them out to spot-clean. ...Then I got bit. And didn't even realize I did until my poor friend freaked out and screamed about the blood. So! I'd say, yes, but DEFINITELY not a lot! It's the strike itself that'll scare you more! Tops, I felt a small sting for maybe 2-3 seconds...Then I was just annoyed they bit me. XD

When I lived in Monterey, California I used to catch alligator lizards pretty often. I think the majority were southern alligator lizards and were brown with black and white crossbars, but sometimes I would find black and yellow speckled ones, or grayish ones with red backs. They often had those gray mites clinging to them behind their ears, or in their armpits. I would usually remove the mites by pinching them close to their mandibles so I could pull them off without leaving bits stuck in the lizard. The alligator lizards were generally similar to this glass lizard, but not as smooth, and with legs -- slightly more lizard shaped. They could move like snakes, with a side-to-side undulation.

I keep seeing “them” every year around my garden, “they” always seem to make a home under or around the wooden boards next to the fence, and then evacuate for a few months once “they’re” aware I know where they live, but then come back in a few months or the next year. The reason I have “””they””” in quotation marks is because I’m 90% sure it’s the same individual that I keep seeing, not different ones. Maybe he or she is like “da boss man” or the “dame of the realm” for my neighborhood, and my neighborhood is it’s territory, or just what it thinks of as his/her domain, and is the entire word as long as he/she is concerned.

Today when I went herping I found 2 plains garter snakes, 1 common garter snake, smooth grass snake, central fence lizard, five-lined skink, 1 western painted turtle, 4 red eared sliders, and 2 ornate box turtles! It was a pretty good and nice sunny day to go herping and they sure were active! Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera, if I did I would definitely had recorded all the reptiles!

In Georgia? OK cool 🆒️ Nowhere near the Midwest. Very few reptiles up here. I do see garter snakes 🐍 here in my yard that has a long grass field and also in my garden. I pet it. Snakes are cute. Way more less aggressive than the common snapping turtles who are also doing extremely well around here. I always go out of my way to try to save them. I love them. Even if they are agree like the snapper. It was just trying to defend it's self anyway. It has such a long reach, and his sharp hind claws, even with gloves, he was an immovable object!!! Probably 35lbs!!! Huge!!! Yuuugggge!!!

Alligator Lizards also have that fold where its sides meet the belly, and they are very closely related. I grew up on the central coast in California in Coast Redwood habitat and on the west slope of the Santa Cruz mountains the Redwood forest gives way to shrub and grass, and every town between Monterey and San Francisco has a multitude of Alligator lizards of 3 different species, and the same over in the San Joaquin valley and Sacremento valley and north to oregon they are quite possibly the most commonly found lizard in California. The Runner up would have to be the little western fence lizards that we call Bluebellies! The Alligator lizards on the west coast are from light to dark brown with a spackling of squarish black and white checker that are quite small, they have eyes that vary from yellow to gold, on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains is the Panamint Alligator lizard and it's the same color only the black and white speklings are closer together and form bands or cross stripes across the body, much like the Alligator lizards you caught in Texas and New Mexico, The Northern Alligator lizard is my favorite as is larger in body size (bulkier) though not as long as some of the others, they have Golden eyes and they pay very close attention to what you are doing, I had one that had two tails because it almost dropped its tail but not all the way and the new one grew back where it split giving it actually a forked tail! I named him George and had him for almost 3 years, he was very interactive and would eat mealworms right from my fingers and after the first day he never tried to bite or squirm away, he would sit and chill in my hand and fall asleep and like being gently stroked on the top of his head. Very cool lizards!

Its really easy to understand how the last snake in the video, the brown water snake is confused with the cottonmouth. If I had seen the video frozen or still at 26:33 moved from the road to grass I would without question say that is a cottonmouth. I would be surprised to hear that I was wrong. Plus as shown here they are nervous and quick to bite compared to the more laid back style of the average cottonmouth .
