Excellent overall coverage of a basic service which I would feel competent to attend without pins and springs and things getting lost in the workshop. I like your filing adjustment to the cone spanner, which is an elegant solution to an annoying problem. Thanks

I suspect that the nut which you called a 15mm is probably a ⅝". Having some imperial wrenches available can be very handy when working on older British bikes. All the best. 👍

Good video, I was working on one yesterday where for some reason when in 3rd gear it was not running smooth, back pedaling had some intermittent resistance. From your video I could also be missing the locking washer on the drive side!.

Very helpful video - I just followed along with this to service my bearings because the hub on my Hercules was spinning the pedals when freewheeling. The good news is that the immediate problem is fixed but the bad news is I’ve now seen the inside of the hub and the internal gears look like they’re covered in lard! Might have to do a full strip now lol.
@MonkeyShred3 жыл бұрын
It’s not too hard! I think the toughest bit is getting that damn lock ring off to pull the internals out.

@@MonkeyShred Hi. I’ve got a problem with my Sturmey archer 3 speed hub on my raleigh. It doesn’t engage idle when pedaling or just when I walk bike pedals keep spining. When cycling I can feel force transmitted to pedals when I’m not pedalling. Is there a simple fix to it?

Hi, really good videos. my 1952gear hub feels very rough but now i'm confident to repair having watched your procedures. However, it does appear you finish off by replacing the sprocket upside down? That is concave side up. Your vid on the seized hub had its coil spring in the wrong side, so maybe you're actually fitting the sprockets correctly. I assume it will affect chain alignment if sprocket is fitted wrong way round? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Martin
@wonkylommiter63644 жыл бұрын
It seems to me there is a bit of chainline fine tuning available by varying where you put the 2 sprocket spacers, and which way round you fit the offset of the sprocket. - spacers outside sprocket and concave side facing in is one extreme, concave side facing out and 2 spacers inboard of the sprocket, is the other extreme, one pacer inside one out, etc. gives a chance to fine tune the position. it may be as in my case, that how it was fitted wasn't ideal, easy to adjust.
@Ricobass02 жыл бұрын
S-A service information says "... screw up the right hand cone finger tight. Then slacken it back half a turn and lock it in that position with the special washer and locknut. On no account must the cone be unscrewed more than half a turn, as that would throw the gear mechanism out of adjustment."

Great video. Does the indicator spindle become fixed to something when you put it back into the castle?
@MonkeyShred Жыл бұрын
Yes, you screw it in. It fixes in to the tab that fits through the axle centre.

@MonkeyShred3 жыл бұрын
Which nut? Sprocket can be installed either way with the spacers on either side. It's how you can fine tune the chain line.

Hi, the problem I do have on my bike is that the key is broken inside the lock in the open (pin lock down) position, so I can’t extract the whole barrel from the fork. I do have a replacement key with the correct number, but first I need to remove the old broken key piece from the lock.

Hi. Sorry, not sure how that relates to a Sturmey Archer hub service?

Wasn't the AM that was an attempt to replace it, but the SW. The AM is medium gear spacing, AW is wide.

I see some sources say that say that thick grease should not be used on Sturmey Archer hubs. What are your thoughts on that?
@MonkeyShred4 жыл бұрын
I've seen the same. I only use the thicker grease to support the bearings and avoid anything going in the mechanisms.

The AW hubs are pretty good. It all depends how they've been looked after though. I've found a couple of seized hubs but I've also had 60 year old hubs that have been happy to get riding again without any maintenance.

Can anyone help fix my problem (after following these instructions to do a bearing service.) See my short video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntZ-odF92bqVpnU.html Even when I rebuild hub, mount on bike in frame and spin wheel by hand it barely goes 1/2 turn before stopping dead and as you can see trying to turn the axle by hand off the bike is impossible!! :( Was working ok before I followed this video to clean up the bearings :/

@@MonkeyShred Sorry I think you had to click the link because it unlisted, I've now made it public on my channel too! I'd be really grateful for any thoughts of what could have happened!
@MonkeyShred3 жыл бұрын
@@N3nzi maybe I’m missing something but that looks fine to me 😅 the axle is going to be held in the bike anyway and won’t rotate but the hub has to engage to spin the wheel in a clockwise rotation. It should disengage and ratchet if you stop peddling which would be an anti clockwise motion.
