After doing a DOHC timing belt service the first time, i laughed at how easy it actually was. I started doing them for fun when people complained about the dealer quote. I was a third the price, faster, and none came back. Mine was a JDM V4 STi(ej20k), then i did my '98 forester S. After that i knew the tricks for speed and ease. Certain things don't need removed as the service guides say. But that comes from experience. Recently i bought a running exact car you're repairing. $400 delivered to my place. Ran, but he thought the engine was bad. Well the lower idler puked its bearings out, figured that out when i pulled the front cover. $75 belt and water pump kit and had a running car with 133k! I always loved the Impreza 2.2 better, no HG issues, and early ones were non interference also. Great cars all the way around. Apparently the early pullies had a single bearing inside and wore quickly. The dual row bearing is the newer superceded part, that's exactly what happened on mine. Easy fix

My pistons are at mid stroke, I lined it up with the mark on the bottom of the oil pump and above the crankshaft. My questions is I need to time my left driver side intake and exhaust camshafts but I feel resistance on both of them? Should I lightly push pressure to make them turn all the way so they can line up properly? The resistance could be from the tensioner spring and my driver side camshafts are off by 180 degrees. Intake double line is at the top and the exhaust double lines are at the bottom. so what do you think? I need your advise or any other subie owners that have dealt with this. I don’t want to bend any valves

The meister himself, doing a proper DOHC timing job with the 2-piece oldschool tensioner. Very good. Thanks for this video! These are... were... a very common kit outside the US, on first gens and second gens, and Imprezas pre 97. That kit you're using though... single row bearings in both the smooth idlers.... NASTY. JUST NASTY.

I have a question. Before removing the old belt if I spin the crank to align the marks on the cams but somehow they don't line up what is the best next step? Would you lock the cams with the tool and then take off the belt or let the cams jump as they usually do and then set them from there. And last there's the famous problem where the double marks don't line up after engine rotation is this normal?

I'm trying to figure out: Had timing belt /water pumped pulleys/idelrs replaces on 1998 Legacy 2.5 Since I got it back I found it louder than it was before, and more hi-pitched sounding. There is vibration at idle (in P and D) Fuel economy seems worse too (though it is cold here) Mechanic said: if timing belt was misaligned, the tach-needle would be stuttering non-stop. He says I need a new drive shaft, and won't look at anything else until that's done. I have three days left to dispute the charge. Wondering if I should dispute the charge, bite the bullet and get another mechanic to inspect the timing belt. Any advice appreciated.

IMPORTANT QUESTION! I just did a timing belt/water pump kit in my 03 WRX with a Dayco kit. Japan tensioner, idler sprocket, water pump (nsk) and South Korea (GMB) idler pulleys and Dayco belt. I followed all factory service torque and procedures (per the official technicians service manual). Car started up fine and no timing codes and runs great except for a whining sound now generated by the timing belt system (confirmed by running the engine w/serp belt removed for a short time). The sound almost mimics that of a supercharger when rpms are increased. I've driven almost 100 miles since the service and the noise seems to have gotten quieter (a little bit) but is still there. Could it be the automatic tensioner settling in? New bearings in the pulleys wearing in? Noise from the belt itself? I am very concerned as the motor is still in very good shape at 145k miles and I dont want to ruin it. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I plan on pulling the timing cover tomorrow to make sure the belt isn't shredding.

Is it safe to release the timing belt on a WRX EJ20 while the crank is not at it's timing mark? With the old timing belt still on, the top right hand side (facing the car) inlet cam slipped clockwise while the crank stayed at it's timing mark when trying to undo the crank bolt again after aligning everything at it's timing marks. I was using a socket on the cam for leverage as I'd already undone the crank bolt before so didn't think it would take much leverage. Anyway the cam skipped forward and the crank stayed put. I then rotated the crank twice trying to realign everything but it was way out then when the crank reached just before 9 o'clock I could feel interference so I stopped. I tried going backwards and I can now feel interference at around 3 o'clock too. I'm not sure what to do now as I can't get the crank back to 12 o'clock. I want to release the timing belt and realign everything but I'm worried that I will destroy the valves if the crank isn't in the correct position.
