“Homocide, never doing no time.” Was Just-ice a NYC rapper back in the late 80s. “As long as I’m alive, I’m gonna live illegal” was Mobb Deep! “And when I get on, I’mma put on all my people.” Shook Ones part II. Great track. I always thought about it like, just me being alive, and living is illegal. I don’t have to do anything and they’ll find a way to say I’m breaking the law. Or it can mean, I’ll always break the law until I die. You also gotta remember this song was from the 90s. Most rap threw a “187 on a cop” line somewhere. But the feeling is real. Still relevant today. I watched the LA riots on TV along with Rodney King shit. I knew it was fucked up then. Shit going on is still fucked up. Anyway, great reaction as always. Johnny Butts is a good Sublime song. Also, All you need, for some faster music from Sublime.

Right on the samples I'd add the "I'm feeling sad" sample is from Slick Rick's "La Di Da Di" (sniped out of the sung "It's all because of you, I'm feeling sad and blue. You went away, now my life is filled with rainy days") I'd also say the "187 on a motherf*in cop" line especially was not as common as you imply. The term 187 was heard sometimes, it's the code for murder in the California penal system. But Ice-T's/Body Count's "cop killer" (album released March 1992) was so controversial and problematic that many refrained from saying it so explicitly. (The album was even banned at many locations) The exception comes from an already recorded, and thefore April 9th, 1992 (notice the date?) released song by Dr Dre, and introducing Snoop Dog to the world, "Deep Cover (One Eight Seven)" from the 1992 movie of the same name. The song got away with it a bit more because of the movie it was attached to and the story it was telling, but still, it had major issues. The Sublime reference is to that song specifically (in which "Yeah, and you don't stop ... Cause it's 187 on an undercover cop" is the hook) ...a song that was just hitting the streets at the exact time, and therefore became a bit of an low-key anthem and rallying cry that could be heard during the riots. Ironically though, one of the funniest things about this Sublime song comes in the fact that the riots didn't actually start until the officers were acquitted on April *29th* 1992 (Bradley made an error in the verse that was kept lol) It should also be said, no cops were killed in the riots and the riots didn't really take place outside of the LA area (I was in Huntington Beach, about 20 minutes south of Long Beach, and had family in Lakewood, which is connected to LB. Nearby smoke could be seen at their place, and I saw a few damaged buildings in the Lakewood/Long Beach area, but it was very minor isolated incidents. The rioting really didn't extend to there very much at all, despite Long Beach being so close to Los Angeles. It was an almost exclusively LA situation; unlike this song implies)

Good to see a new generation showing some respect to a great band cut short. But... the LA riots were so massive in scale that it would have blown your mind. It really was total anarchy - and THAT is why this song was written.

All those cities at the end also had riots/uprisings after LA went off. Of course they were on a much smaller scale. I was 10 years old when it happened and didn't understand how significant it was at the time. It wasn't until I was listening to Sublime a few years later that it hit me and I was able to semi comprehend just how big of a deal the entirety of it was. Yes, Ferguson was huge and went on for a long time and started marches in other cities but Ferguson was small potatoes compared to what happened in April and May of 1992. Over 60 people were killed and (if I remember correctly) well over 10,000 arrests...in only 6 days! It was a powder keg and the fuse was lit. The gov't was sent a message and they received it loud and clear. That's when the militarization of the police force began. No longer would the gov't allow the citizens to overpower them and they have only gotten worse sense then. One day it will happen. There will be another LA Riots one day and we, the people, will need to stand together against our overlords. Next time will have many times more casualties and arrests but we can only take having our necks stepped on so many times.

I appreciate you recognizing the Native American injustice. I'm a native myself and sometimes it seems like everyone just glazes over what was done to our people, which breaks my heart. I'm saddened not for myself but for my brave ancestors who never let go of their ways and their integrity no matter what wrongs they were forced to endure. May the Great Spirit forgive us all, and accept us into the kingdom of the blue sky.

its called Pawn Shop not April 26, 1992 lol, but I gotta give you a huge TY for being one of maybe 2 to react to Sublime! They are like no other and always put good vibes out. Another boy we lost way too soon tho! RIP Bradley Nowell (Lead Singer). And just some insight to the time and place of the riots, yes it initially started because of the 4 LA cops being acquitted on all charges which you can find an angle to argue that particular case as yes Rodney initiated by charging the officer but they then as we have all seen beat the crap outa him. Someone videoed the incident and we all saw the 81 seconds of the beating, but the first of it with King charging them cut out, but the first jury saw it and that is why they got acquitted, (unbelievable as it is) Within minutes of the verdict all hell broke loose and took Rodney King himself on TV asking if we could all just get along to end the riots days later and dozens of people dead and 5000 fires and 100's of millions of dollars in damage. Yes the initial reaction was over white and black conflict but during the riots the Asians took the biggest hit because it was most of their stores that got hit because of the conflict between blacks and Asians, the blacks didn't like them coming into their neighborhoods and "finding success" opening small businesses, and the Mexicans got in on it too as at the time in the 80's and 90's it seemed like they beefed with every race in S. Cali. After the second trial two officers were acquitted and two sent to federal prison, and in 2012 Rodney King was found dead in his swimming pool of an apparent drowning. My question is why does it always take something so big and publicized to get us talking? Does someone have to die before we try and find compromise? And even then it's calm for a bit then right back to it. Who's out there still breeding hatred for another human, we didn't ask or have a choice to come into this world and we are all freaking stuck here. Can you imagine how amazing it would be if racism, chauvinism, etc. didn't exist? One can dream can't they? But hey thanks for the reaction again, great job! Keep it up!

Everything Brad talked about in this song was true. If you hear interviews from some of the people who were participating in the riots, people really were just filling up their vehicles with merch from stores and driving shit home. Then they'd torch the buildings. That really was going on. There was also murders, assaults and everything else you could imagine that people just got away with because police were called back from the area of the riots for their own protection.

I love the storytelling in this song, and how they say it wasn’t about Rodney king, it wasn’t about what colour you are it was about the LAPD being assholes to everyone for way too long. The poor people in long beach and south central had had enough and were all “let’s take what we can and burn the rest to the ground” which isn’t right but it makes sense. Do yourself a favour and watch the LA92 documentary on Netflix, it makes this song make more sense. I was 7 when that all happened watching it on the news in Australia and I’m like “Mum why are they all so angry?” And she told me “a man was killed and it wasn’t right, so now they’re angry…” how do you explain a socio political uprising to a kid?? It did make me think about inequality a lot more and when I heard this song I totally got what it was about from half a world away. By far my favourite sublime song. Thanks for the video x

Every kid from Oregon knew the part at the end when he mentions "Eugene Oregon" and would belt it out in perfect time when this was on... they didn't know the rest of the words for the entire song but for those 2.5 seconds, every kid in Oregon felt hard AF... and we definitely weren't. Not me though, i knew them words from the album insert.

I really like your reaction to the line as long as I’m alive I’m gonna live illegal in the moment. You definitely caught it as the most basic and essential meaning of the song and you were correct. It strikes like a thunderbolt. But it’s not about history it’s about now. It’s about living in a society that is so basically criminal, So inherently and obviously corrupt, that the only proper response is to live outside the laws drawn up by said society.

I'm giving this a 👍 before I even watch it cause you're the only person to get the title right. I'm so sick of people referring to this song as April 29th.

Doin' time is an excellent song. Their eerie splendor version and The Pharcydes collab from the single are the best versions of that song imho. Also for most vibey sublime song, I nominate "Waiting for my ruca" for one of the most vibey sublime songs

Sublime has a great cover of "guava jelly" by Bob Marley. Listen on your own time, it's beautiful

This song hits differently with the current situation now. The more things change the more they stay the same.
