Tom Morello uses every aspect of his guitar to get those unique sounds. Every switch, every knob, every string. A lot of players don't take that approach. But, that's what separates him from the rest.

Tom morrello the guitarist said all there songs are bass drums guitars and vocals, so he had to be the guitarist and the DJ because certain parts of the song need just back round sounds like record scratching and sound effects, so he taught him self the be the DJ and the guitarist. Then when it's time to get HEAVEY his riffs are HEAVEY. Check out freedom and renegade's of funk by rage. Especially renegade's of funk no one else has done a reaction video for that song, so you will be the first. Plus that video gives props to all there old school hip hop influences and funk influences, because you can tell they are into metal and funk and hip hop very original. Renegade's of funk trust me
