Did I succeed in making history interesting with the stories I told in this video? For more interesting stories and history, please check out this video about the CATHEDRAL closest to our flat in England! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fcymoM6ZttXbmGw.html To further prove that I really am rubbish at history, and remembering NAMES and places and dates is difficult for me... I apologise for calling the current owner Lady Ashcroft at 19:10... it's actually Lady Ashcombe. Sorry!

The love of this castle, the thrill of the visit on such a beautiful sunny English summer's day was very evident all throughout the video. Your research is always so in depth and interesting. You know what to leave out. I felt the time just slip away watching this fantastic episode of your Cotswold time. You asked at some stage whether Richard the III was a monster? I guess for the time he lived he wouldn't have been considered to be one by many, for fear of reprisals or loss of favor at the court. I guess given today's world he wouldn't get away with this. It made me reflect on our 'monsters' of today. Have we changed much at all? I love history and all it's findings. We can learn so much more of how we are who we are. Thank you for this wonderful start to my day. 👍 💖 🇳🇱🙋‍♀️ 🇳🇿

Anita, you are too kind! So glad you enjoyed my little "documentary" ;-) That much historical research was very difficult for me, but knowing that some history buffs enjoy it makes it all worthwhile! I agree that we continue to have monsters today, who only care about their own wealth and status, and many people suffer on their climb to power. The point of history is for us to LEARN from it. I hope we do!

I think many Americans are not familiar with this castle. Because it is not part of the National Trust or English Heritage network, and not in a popular location like London, it doesn't get the same volume of foreign tourists. But yes, it has absolutely fascinating stories!!! One I didn't mention is that the current owner is an American woman from Kentucky who was swept off her feet by a dashing British aristocrat who was sole heir to the castle. They married and had a happy life and two small children, and then he tragically died from a heart attack at age 40! She has tried to keep the castle open, profitable, and in the family for future generations.

Another beautiful summer video, mmm, its very cold and wet here at the moment. Superb drone footage Ian. I believe the gatehouses would often be built in the same architectural style as the main house. Bear baiting was basically a very brutal gambling opportunity. A bear would be chained to spot in a ring and a number of dogs would be let loose on it, mainly bulldogs. I believe the current owner of Sudeley is an American lady.
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 2 жыл бұрын
That's the idea... I'm re-living all the beautiful sunny summer days in the middle of a dreary, cold winter! haha I agree that bear baiting was horribly cruel! Yes, the story of the owners is also fascinating... I just didn't have time to fit it into this video that was already so long! She is an American from Kentucky that married a dashing British aristocrat with this amazing family home... and tragically he died of a massive heart attack when he was only 40!!! She has tried her best to keep the estate in the family for future generations. But it's definitely challenging!

Whilst we do get plenty of "Vacation Days" we tend to spend them in other countries. I was trying to channel my inner Lucy Worsley and do a more documentary style with this video... a bit more difficult for me than just vlogging about magenta flowers and cheese, but I felt it HAD to be done. @@MagentaOtterTravels Hi Dara, yourself and Ian make such fascinating vlogs....or is it blogs? Never really sure! Couldn't help being an MOT member! Btw you don't have to tell me about human females, my ex-wife used to dye her hair all sorts of colours, sometimes single colours, more often multicolour! It got to the stage, if I was on just a day run, I'd leave in the morning and she'd be blonde, I'd come home at night and she'd look like she'd been on a gay pride march!!! It's a wonder I didn't end up schizophrenic!! I must tell you a funny story at this point, I've worn my hair very long most of my life, and once the ex-wife and one of her friends decided to give me dreadlocks, arriving at work next morning, the boss, who never, ever turned a hair whatever I looked like said, "old Frank (forgot his name)s regular driver, (also called Nick), is having a couple of days off, I've promised him a driver who can drive a semi-crash box, so your it!! Semi-crash gearboxes are very difficult, no synchromesh on the gears, so unless the engine revs are exactly right it will never change gear. When I arrived at his yard I thought poor old Frank was going to have a heart-attack, his face went through at least four colour changes. I swear he thought my boss was pranking him. I grabbed the delivery notes, jumped in the truck and took-off before he could change his mind, as I changed cleanly up the the gears, I looked in the mirror, and he was stood outside his office with his bottom jaw about level with his belt-buckle.

I always laugh when they claim somewhere is haunted. if ghosts was real, we wouldn't be able to move for sightings of ghosts of chickens. as around 3 billion are killed per week world wide. beautifully made video as always. I love the image of the world being overrun with ghost chickens. That would teach us meat eaters. Agree with you on the ghosts. As a pre-teen I was fascinated by hauntings and read every book on it that I could, but nowadays, I think that claims of the supernatural are more to goose up the notoriety of a place than anything else. I'm registered and licensed in the UK to operate a drone. My drone is under 500 grams so it has very few restrictions but when it comes to historic properties I'm pretty careful about where I fly. I don't fly over NT or English Heritage sites because their regs forbid it (Dunster was done before I was aware of that). What I do is research where the public footpaths are (which is what I did at Sudeley) and take off from there or a layby and then keep a good distance away from things. In cases where I fly over, close by, or from a property, I get permission. An example of that was Broadway Tower. They have posted "No drones" on the entrance gate. We really wanted to drone there so we asked, and they allowed us to do it early in the morning before most visitors were there. Fortunately, drones under 500 grams don't have the restrictions that larger drones do. They can fly over towns and villages which isn't possible with larger drones. BTW, I really like the public footpath system in the UK. You'd never see anything like that in Texas. It wouldn't work, too many people would end up shot. Do they have similar public footpaths in the Channel Islands?
@jeanlongsden1696
@jeanlongsden1696 2 жыл бұрын
@@ians3586 yes, we have lots of public footpaths. one of which is a coastal path that goes around the whole island. the only area I know you cant fly here is near the airport, for obvious reasons. I believe your British license would be valid here too, if you ever paid a visit.
@ians3586
@ians3586 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeanlongsden1696 Yes airports are the most important places to avoid when it comes to droning. My drone has software that prevents it from taking off in restricted areas (zones around airports or military bases). I would definitely like to see the Channel Islands. I've been interested in the Channel Islands ever since I read an article in National Geographic about them in the 70's that talked about them being a tax haven and a beautiful place for a holiday.

For much of the ruins here we may safely blame Henry VIII. If it were not for him many of these castles would still be intact. In him we have our very own `Iconoclast.` What the Taliban are doing in the Middle East now Henry VIII and those that followed him were doing here 500 years ago. Perhaps this is a simplified view of my country, and I am willing to take criticism and learn from it. There`s a brilliant short set of documentaries by Timeline beginning with "S1:E1:England`s Bloody Crown." Available in YT.

The comparison with the cultural damage done by the Taliban is very apt. There are 3 people I wish I could erase from British history for the damage they've done to it - Henry VIII, Oliver Cromwell, and Hitler. Actually, I could probably add 20th century town planners to that list as well.

One of the most popular sport Elizabethan eras was bear-baiting. In this brutal test, a bear would be led into a pit and then chained to a stake by its leg or neck. As spectators cheered and placed bets, a pack of dogs-usually bulldogs or mastiffs-would be unleashed into the arena to torment and attack the bear. Well, to me this sounds not very fun 😩
